1 California Range Riders C.R.R. Trail Blazer The Newsletter of the California Range Riders If you were at our match in October, you saw this flag flying over the announcer s booth along with our US flag. POW/MIA Flag..by Johnny Longknife and Scarlet Angel In 1971, Mrs. Mary Hoff, an MIA wife and member of the National League of American Prisoners and Missing in Southeast Asia, recognized the need for a symbol of our POW/MIAs. Prompted by an article in the Jacksonville, Florida TIMES-UNION, Mrs. Hoff contacted Norman Rivkees, Vice-President of Annin & Company which had made a banner for the newest member of the United Nations, the People's Republic of China, as a part of their policy to provide flags to all UN member nations. Mrs. Hoff found Mr. Rivkees very sympathetic to the POW/MIA issue. The company commissioned Newton Heisley, a creative director for an advertising firm in New Jersey and former World War II pilot, to design the flag. He based the design on the wartime memories he had. The flag is black, bearing in the center, in black and white, the emblem of the League. The emblem is a white disk bearing in black silhouette the bust of a man, watch tower with a guard holding a rifle, and a strand of barbed wire, above the disk are the white letters POW and MIA framing a white 5-pointed star; below the disk is a black and white wreath above the white motto YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN. In 1990, the 101st Congress officially recognized the POW/MIA flag, designating it the symbol of our Nation s concern and commitment to resolving as fully as possible the fates of Americans still prisoner, missing and unaccounted for in Southeast Asia, thus ending the uncertainty for the families and the Nation.. The1998 Defense Authorization Act required that the League s POW/MIA flag fly six days each year: Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, National POW/MIA Recognition Day and Veterans Day. It must be displayed at the White House, the U.S. Capitol, the Departments of State, Defense and Veterans Affairs, the headquarters of the Selective Service System, major military installations as designated by the Secretary of the Defense, all Federal cemeteries and all offices of the U.S. Postal Service.

2 P a g e 2 Other than Old Glory, the League s POW/MIA flag is the only flag ever to fly over the White House, having been displayed in this place of honor on National POW/MIA Recognition Day since National POW/MIA Recognition Day is a day to remember POW/MIAs. Originally held in April, National POW/MIA Day was moved to the third Friday in September, as April is normally rainy. Recently a national correspondent for the Washington Spectator described the POW/MIA flag as a symbol of racist hate and opined that it should be pulled down. This uniformed person does not realize that the black silhouette on the flag is intended to be a SHADOW! A shadow that symbolizes all POW/MIAs of all colors and ethnic backgrounds, nothing more nothing less. If condemning the POW/MIA flag becomes a popular pastime to gain media attention, as is the bringing down of all things Confederate, believe me people it will not be the same as sanitizing the history of the confederacy which is a faded memory of the 1860 s. The POW/MIA flag is here and now, those who will condemn it will become the enemies of every veteran and GI in America and the retaliation won t be pretty. The sources of information for this article include pow-miafamilies.org/history-of-the-powmiaflag; americanflags.com/powmiaflags; personal comments from those who have served or know a POW/MIA. 4 P a g e 4 New Perpetual Award for To honor the legacy of SNAKIPOO, we will now have a yearly award for CRR'S HORSE OF THE YEAR.. We will call it the SnakiPoo. This award will not be for the fastest, prettiest, or most popular horse.. The criteria for this award will be the horse that you have seen in or outside the arena that exemplifies the spirit of SnakiPoo. Snaki gave his all to the sport of mounted shooting and the ones who he loved. He introduced countless new shooters to the sport. His heart and soul was given completely on every run he did. The horse of the year award will be voted on by the other shooters. You will be able to vote in person or by . The idea is to bring more focus to these amazing animals that allow us to do what we do. We need to honor our partners in the arena; so this year and in the years to come, don't just watch for the misses or fast runs by the riders, but truly watch these horses do what they do and at the end of the year please vote for the horse you feel changed the sport and changed our way of looking at the true stars of this sport and our club, the horses. Pick the horse that made you cheer them on. Voting will begin after our last match via or in person at the last match. Voting will close after the December newsletter. Any horse that competed in our current season can be voted on; even if they are no longer with us. You will not be able to vote for your own horse or the horse you ride that is owed by someone else. For example if you ride Ace and I own him we cannot vote for him. The idea is to watch the other horses out there, we know you love your own ride and think he/she is the best. Send your votes to: Robin Hambey cowgirluprdh@aol.com Debbie McAlpin scarletangel86@sbcglobal.net Robin Hambey

7 P a g e 7 November 2, 1734 Daniel Boone was born. November 4, 1862 Richard Gatling patented his first rapid-fire machine-gun. The gun was based on Gatling s seed planter. The Gatling gun's operation centered on a cyclic multi-barrel design which facilitated cooling and synchronized the firing/reloading sequence. Each barrel fired a single shot when it reached a certain point in the cycle, after which it ejected the spent cartridge, loaded a new round, and in the process, cooled down somewhat. This configuration allowed higher rates of fire to be achieved without the barrel overheating. November 7, 1811 General William H. Harrison led 1,000 Americans in battle, defeating the Shawnee Indians at the Battle of Tippecanoe Creek near Lafayette, Indiana. November 8, 1895 X-rays (electromagnetic rays) were discovered by Wilhelm Roentgen at the University of Wuerzburg in Germany. November 8, 1847 Bram Stoker, author of Dracula, was born in Dublin, Ireland. November 8, 1900 Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone with the Wind, was born in Atlanta, Georgia. November 10, 1775 The U.S. Marine Corps was established as part of the U.S. Navy. It became a separate unit on July 11, November 11th In 1918 the Armistice between the Allied and Central Powers was signed, silencing the guns of World War I effective at 11 a.m. the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. In many places in Europe, a moment of silence in memory of the millions of fallen soldiers is still observed. Veterans Day (formerly called Armistice Day). Today we thank and honor living veterans who served honorably in the military in wartime or peacetime. November 15, 1864 During the Civil War, Union troops under General William T. Sherman burned Atlanta. November 22, 1718 Blackbeard the pirate, Edward Teach, was killed off the coast of North Carolina. November 22, 1859 Billy the Kid, aka William H. Bonney, was born in New York City. November 24, 1874 Joseph Glidden patented his invention of barbed wire. November 26, 1853 Bat Masterson was born in Henryville, Quebec. November 26, 1835 Author Samuel Clemens, aka Mark Twain, was born in Florida, Missouri. November 26 Happy Thanksgiving. Visit The History Place for more information.
