1 J u l y California Range Riders C.R.R. Trail Blazer The Newsletter of the California Range Riders July 4th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution ( ). In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle weighed a resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain. On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 until the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence. The American flag consists of 13 equal horizontal stripes representing the 13 colonies that declared independence from Great Britain and became the first states in the U.S., a blue rectangle in the canton representing the union and fifty small, white, five-pointed stars representing the 50 states of the U.S. The flag was first adopted in June This version contained 13 stars. The 50 star version was adopted July 4, 1960, is the 27th design and is the longest-used version of the flag. The 48-star flag was used for 47 years. Why red, white and blue? According to custom and tradition, white signifies purity and innocence; red, hardiness and valor; and blue signifies vigilance, perseverance, and justice. I started to write this about the 13 folds of the flag and the meaning. I found several answers to this question so I choose to go with the Air Force script as this is what was read at my husband s retirement ceremony when he was presented with the flag for his service to our country. For more than 200 years, the American flag has been the symbol of our nation's unity, as well as a source of pride and inspiration for millions of citizens. Born on June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress determined that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternating between seven red and six white; and that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field representing a new constellation.

2 P a g e 2 J u l y Between 1777 and 1960, the shape and design of the flag evolved into the flag presented before you today. The 13 horizontal stripes represent the original 13 colonies, while the stars represent the 50 states of the Union. The colors of the flag are symbolic as well; red symbolizes hardiness and valor; white signifies purity and innocence; and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice. Traditionally, a symbol of liberty, the American flag has carried the message of freedom, and inspired Americans, both at home and abroad. In 1814, Francis Scott Key was so moved at seeing the Stars and Stripes waving after the British shelling of Baltimore's Fort McHenry that he wrote the words to The Star Spangled Banner. In 1892 the flag inspired Francis Bellamy to write the "Pledge of Allegiance," our most famous flag salute and patriotic oath. In July 1969 the American flag was "flown" in space when Neil Armstrong planted it on the surface of the moon. Today, our flag flies on constellations of Air Force satellites that circle our globe, and on the fin flash of our aircraft in harms way in every corner of the world. Indeed, it flies in the heart of every Airman who serves our great Nation. The sun never sets on our US Air Force, nor on the flag we so proudly cherish. Since 1776 no generation of Americans has been spared the responsibility of defending freedom... Today's Airmen remain committed to preserving the freedom that others won for us, for generations to come. By displaying the flag and giving it a distinctive fold we show respect to the flag, and express our gratitude to those individuals who fought, and continue to fight for freedom, at home and abroad. Since the dawn of the 20th century, Airmen have proudly flown the flag in every major conflict on lands and skies around the world. It is their responsibility... our responsibility... to continue to protect and preserve the rights, privileges and freedoms that we, as Americans, enjoy today. The United States flag represents who we are. It stands for the freedom we all share and the pride and patriotism we feel for our country. We cherish its legacy, as a beacon of hope to one and all. Long may it wave. I hope that you all enjoyed your Fourth of July. Scarlet Angel

11 P a g e 11 J u l y This month I have chosen to put up the Bio of the founder of the California Range Riders, for without his never ending hard work we would not be coming together once a month to have fun. Let me start out to say Thank you to Steve for the hard work, as some of you may know, it takes a lot of dedication and some broad shoulders to run a club of any kind. Steve Holland AKA Old Buckaroo started mounted shooting in September His mount was a horse bought sight unseen off of the internet. Steve has traveled many miles to enjoy and put on matches; and, in all kinds of weather-snow in Reno to 100 plus degrees at the Calavares County Frog Jump. I have seen Old Buckaroo do everything from blow up and set the balloons, set stages to announce and even be able to ride in the match. I ve even seen him on the History Channel. Steve s bio says that he is a Train Robber and his motto is Still shakin in my boots. Thank you again, Steve, for your hard work, your service in the U.S. Navy and Happy Birthday (July 27). Scarlet Angel scarletangel86@sbcglobal.net The best view is from the back of my horse. Scarlet Angel, Heaven n Hell all rolled into one. I wouldn t want to be the one on the hell side.
