1 California Range Riders C.R.R. Trail Blazer The Newsletter of the California Range Riders The Party.by Johnny Longknife & Sierra Rose The May issue of the C.R.R. Trail Blazer included an open invitation, Happy 62nd Birthday to Jerry Bestpitch and Happy 35th Anniversary to the JB Ranch. Hope to see y all at the party! Saturday May 3rd was a beautiful sunny day with a cool breeze, a perfect day for a party. Scarlet Angel, Wicked Wayze (Debbie & Bill McAlpin), Sierra Rose and Johnny Longknife (Barbara & John Cuneo) arrived at the JB Ranch party early afternoon and were greeted by party hosts, Jerry and Lisa. We were escorted to the gathering place under a big shade tree by the homestead house and introduced to the folks already there. This was a very relaxed come as you are gathering, as people kept coming and going all day and well into the evening. We met folks who were Jerry s friends, neighbors, customers, business associates, and even folks who rode with Jerry in the Highway 50 wagon train events. Naturally, California Range Riders Mounted Shooters were also in attendance. Everyone enjoyed a wonderful layout of food and drinks including taco makings, nachos and dip, deviled eggs and a spicy southwestern bean dish. There was even a bar with water, soft drinks and beer on tap featuring two excellent offerings from a local micro brewery. Lisa even mixed drinks for those who wanted them, including her famous margaritas. During the afternoon, Jerry gave tours of the JB Ranch, trail rides around the property, and set up a big screen TV in the harness room and shop area with continuous videos of wagon rides, shooting events, wagon and trail events and many western and cowboy events, fairs and shows Jerry has participated in, including a couple of movies he has been in. By evening, the food and drinks were moved to a spacious and comfortable assembly area behind the house with ample seating and tables. We were then treated to not only more food and drinks, but also real authentic traditional country and western music by the Campfire Crooners, the best country western dance music I have heard in a long time. From time to time, between her hosting activities, Lisa played the spoons with the band. Lisa has many talents we found out. About sundown, we thanked Jerry and Lisa for a wonderful day and headed home as Scarlet and Wicked Wayze had a long drive home and we had chores to do. Jerry was one of the first people we met when we got interested in mounted shooting. We were introduced at a practice for a club that is no longer active and again at a competition at the Ponderosa. We had gone to both places to see what mounted shooting was all about. During the lunch break at Ponderosa, Jerry spotted us at a table and joined. He asked us if we had any questions about the sport and we began talking about the guns and horses. I don t really know if Jerry realized that day he made quite the impression on a group of people whose interest in the sport was just getting started, and he hasn t been able to get rid of us yet! Haha. That was Jerry was a men s level 2 and won his division at the Ponderosa as well as the Pacific Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) Western Region Overall Championship. He took this title in 2003 & 2004 too. Today, Jerry has a lot of wins behind

2 P a g e 2 him for cowboy mounted shooting and a lot of miles too. He was the first men s level 6 shooter in Ca., and he has traveled to many different states as well, proudly representing our sport. He has been, and still is, a professional wrangler, trail guide, and trainer of horse and riders alike, giving riding and mounted shooting lessons and clinics to all those who desire to increase their skills. If you are interested in learning from one of the best, give Jerry a call. If you would like to know more about Jerry, check out the ranch s website home.html Who is Jerry Bestpitch is a very interesting read. One last thing that I learned recently about Jerry is that he proudly served our country too, so remember to thank him on Veteran s day. Everyone is looking forward to the next party. Will there be a 63rd birthday and 36th anniversary party? We hope so. Ride like you stole em and shoot like you want to keep em Jerry Bestpitch

3 P a g e 3 Rip-Roaring opportunity for you and your horse! Equine Dentistry July 11 th 2014 weekend JD Cowgirl, aka Constance Jaegel, is hosting Dr. Richard Miller, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Dr Miller specializes in Equine Dentistry only. This clinic will be held at Constance s place (9255 Tesla Rd in Livermore). The clinic will be held on July 11 and 12 th 2014 this year! Please call Constance for details or to book a spot. Contact info: Cell # is (408) , Home # is (925) and is iwasjdcowgirl@yahoo.com Dr. Miller brings his mobile office to Constance s ranch. His office is really something to see. It is a large horse trailer converted into one heck of a Dental facility on wheels. Your horse is asked to load into a trailer and the Dr. will show you hands on your horses areas of necessary work or maintenance for good horse health. Only work you approve will be completed and is very reasonably priced. In my experience, Dr. Miller and his team were as wonderful with his four legged patients as their two legged owners. He encourages owner participation and photos. Dr. Miller is VERY thorough, patient, and knowledgeable. Constance has hosted Dr. Miller for over 8 years now. The Dr. and his crew would like to get at least eight people to sign up per day for the clinic. Check out Dr. Miller s web site: This is worth checking out ya ll AND bringing your 4 legged 4-wheel drive. If you have any questions or would like to sign up contact iwasjdcowgirl@yahoo.com

11 P a g e 11 The Things some people say Recently, Bruce posted this picture on facebook. It was commented on by a very good friend of mine who I grew up with, she moved to Texas about 20 years ago. Rolling back the pages of my history you would see the two of us, what some people would refer to as connected at the hip and most always on horses. Because of some of the things my friend said over the years about my horse, Buddy, I stuck with him through the many unpleasant moments of trying to work with him to become a mounted shooting horse. She shared this picture and posted the following comment with it: As a kid growing up in Northern California, we played Cowboys and Indians...One of us perfected the idea and continued the fun. This is my buddy, Debbie McAlpin, doing what she loves last Saturday afternoon. I Love ya Scarlet, and I'm proud of you. Weeee. Really, I don t think anybody could have come up with a more perfect comment to go with this picture. With that said, I want to thank everyone who puts in all of the hard work to make doing what I love to do, possible. Steve-thanks for all of your hard work to pull it all together; it s not an easy task, helping you where I can, I know the work you put in. Thanks to the Hoffman family for having the wonderful arena they work very hard at, late at night and early in the morning, to keep nice and safe for us riders. The area they provide for us to camp and keep our horses during the match makes it so much easier to come and enjoy the weekend. Please remember to pay your stall fees and clean up your area before you leave to show them your appreciation. To all of the balloon setters, I ve done this job too, it s not easy. Remember to thank them as you go by. To all of the folks who R.O., keeping the riders and balloon setters safe, they are there to help pick us up when we fall; enforcing the rules is no easy job either. To our scorekeepers/announcers, and people who run the computer, without you we would not know when to come into the arena or our times. Those that help set courses and pick up the arena when we are done-yeah I ve done these jobs too and I thank you for doing them as well. And special thanks to Bruce Shoji for capturing all of the moments of doing what we love to do! So, when you start to think things are running too slow, or there are mistakes, instead of complaining, Cowboy up and try doing one of these jobs. The help is appreciated more than you know. And thanks to all of the riders who show up and keep the fun going. Scarlet Angel scarletangel86@sbcglobal.net I pay my therapist in hay and oats. Scarlet Angel, Heaven n Hell all rolled into one. I wouldn t want to be the one on the Hell side. Patches McDuff, Single Action Shooting Society.
