Within 18 months, 12,000 persons in England had been vaccinated and the number of smallpox deaths dropped by two-thirds. May 14, During World War II, an Act of Congress allowed women to enlist for noncombat duties in the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC), the Women Appointed for Voluntary Emergency Service (WAVES), Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS), and Semper Paratus Always Ready Service (SPARS), the Women's Reserve of the Marine Corp. In bad weather they moved inside to a coffeehouse to conduct business. May 17, The first Kentucky Derby horse race took place at Churchill Downs in Louisville. May 20, Charles Lindbergh took off from Roosevelt Field, Long Island, in the Spirit of St. Louis attempting to win a $25,000 prize for the first solo nonstop flight between New York City and Paris. Thirty-three hours later, after a 3,600 mile journey, he landed at Le Bourget, Paris, earning the nickname "Lucky Lindy" and becoming an instant worldwide hero. May 20, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. May 21, The American Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton. The observance date was later moved to May 30th and included American graves from World War I and World War II, and became better known as Memorial Day. In 1971, Congress moved Memorial Day to the last Monday in May, thus creating a three-day holiday weekend.

P a g e 5 Announcements: Mark your calendars! An event you won't want to miss... The Great Basin Pistoleers and the California Range Riders are co-producing a cowboy mounted shooting competition at the Western States Wild Horse and Burro Expo August 17-19th Reno-Sparks Livestock Event Center in Reno, Nevada Shoot details coming soon! Matches/Divisions We are going to combine Seniors and regular classes as far as match awards go, until the economy improves and more riders can participate. As far as CMSA is concerned, your divisions will still be separate, CMSA class rules apply towards move-ups. This does not apply to state shoots. As a courtesy to the arenas we shoot at, please keep your dogs on a leash at matches...i get a lot of complaints from arena owners, as well as people trying to have a nice dinner at the potlucks. Only match supplied ammo/blanks will be allowed at CRR shoots, due to liability concerns.

P a g e 6 L a s s o A D e a l : I am trying to sell my horse because my wife is having back surgery and no longer riding. My horse is 16 years old, quarter horse, white, hands, been used in Civil War reenactments, Police Mounted certified, used in cowboy mounted shooting, a great beginner s horse. My son was shooting a rifle over his head when he was only 14, but now he s grown and off to the military. I would let go for or best offer. Anyone you know looking for a good horse? I will be very picky on who buys this horse, including an inspection on where he will be kept. This horse has been in our family for over 10 years. Thank you Mike.Doyle@fresno.gov Rugers for sale Pair of Ruger Vaqueros 3 3/4" with birdhead grip. These have only been lightly usedabout 20 shoots. They have had professional action jobs and hammers have been turned down. These shoot great. You will just love these guns and it is very hard to find the birdhead grips!! I am asking $1250 (FIRM) for the pair. Contact Christy at cwinsinger@cox.net or call or text I live in Kansas but these can be shipped at your expense! Pair of Taurus single action revolvers. They are the Gauchos model, 45 cal. Long colt. These guns are like brand new. Each gun has had 25 rounds put through them to make sure everything is in good working condition. Each gun has owners manual and warranty paper work. These guns have a great feel and very smooth action. They have been kept in a foam case sealed from dirt and moister and the finish is like new. These guns are perfect for a new shooter just starting out. $800 I also build custom holsters and belt rigs tailored to your personal size and specification. They can be tooled with any picture or theme you choose including, your brand, initials, collage logo and etc.. Custom tooling with matching spots or conchos brings that classic touch to your personal leather rig. I do take custom orders and right now I am about 1 month out on shipping. I will add a custom leather rig with the pair of guns for a fantastic low price of $1000. This is a $425 holster and belt rig, however when you purchase the pair of guns you will get this rig for only $200. That s a savings of $225. This rig comes with three holsters (one right handed, one left handed and one cross draw holster) All are matching design with wide back belt that has a horse head and two pistols with the barrels crossing. They all match with the Texas Lone Star design and conchos. I will be happy to send you photos. me at davidlskipworth@gmail.com or call me at Spotted Elk SASS # Phone # Tombstone, AZ Ken also makes shotgun & rifle scabbards, and pistol holsters.

P a g e 9 Looking forward to seeing all of our new members and prospective members at these upcoming events. If you re inexperienced, come ride time-only and learn the in s and outs of cowboy mounted shooting. APRIL in Review APRIL Saturday GBP (Reno club) Playday/practice (Ione) Great weather 88 degrees both days, pretty well attended 28 riders and more spectators. The potluck was awesome, lots of good cooks in CRR Don Copeland was the overall man with clean stages, with Jerry Kurtz second. Judy Stewart was the overall Lady, with Janet Freeland second. Sunday CRR Quicksilver Shootout X (Ione) CMSA Jerry Bestpitch was the overall man with clean stages, with Don Copeland second. Janet Freeland was the overall Lady, with Judy Moore second. APRIL CRR Desperado Trail I (Hoffmans Arena, Turlock) CMSA Great weather 82 degrees both days and another good potluck. Jon Fix and others played guitars and sang campfire songs. The arena was in great shape and the Hoffman Gang worked hard on showing us great hospitality. Jerry Bestpitch was the overall man with clean stages, with Jerry Kurtz second. Judy Moore was the overall Lady, with Judy Stewart second. We tried out some new blanks from OutlawBlanks...no misfires...no complaints And a big thank you to all that helped cleanup, range master, set courses, scorekeeping, announcing. Upcoming events MAY 5 *** Sonora Parade (Sonora) CRR is looking for riders to participate MAY 19 CRR practice/clinic (Hearts Desire Arena, Turlock) Please RSVP MAY CRR Blazing Saddles XIII (Rio Linda) CMSA JUNE 8-10 CRR Horse Expo (Sacramento) info booth & clinics RSVP please, we need volunteers to work the booth and clinics JUNE CRR California State (Diamond Bar, Ceres) CMSA RSVP please JUNE SASS EoT World Championship (NM) SASS rumor has it CMSA will run the mounted shoot

P a g e 10 The reason for RSVP s RSVP s are important. It helps us plan the amount of supplies (ammo, balloons, etc ) we need at each event. Many times the balloon setter groups want to know how much they will be paid (ahead of time). They are paid by the number of contestants and the number of stages run. The Diamond Bar would like to be able to purchase the appropriate amount of food, instead of over buying or having to make a last minute trip to the store. It s a courtesy and I ask all of you to make an effort in the coming year. As you know, CRR does many activities in addition to mounted shooting competitions, practices, parades, and clinics. Events are subject to change Be sure to read your s and watch for last minute announcements. The 2012 event calendar is available on our website. We now have a Facebook website check it out and join. Just type in the search window (upper right) California Range Riders (CRR) v=wall&gid= Click on events. We have 18+ events listed, so please feel free to RSVP. As always, a big thank you to Scarlet Angel (Debbie McAlpin) for the excellent work on the CRR Trailblazer, and to all the contributing writers great job!...keep it comin. Happy trails to all Old Buckaroo New CRR Members Janet Freeland from Stagecoach, NV Welcome to the Fire We look forward to seeing you soon at more CRR events.

P a g e 11 Be sure to look over our event calendar; it has been updated as of this afternoon. I m so looking forward to Blazing Saddles XIII, hope to see everyone there. Don t forget to RSVP! Scarlet Angel Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain. "Dance like no one is watching. Sing like no one is listening.
