1 J U N E CORRAL CHATTER OUR PUROSE IS TO PROMOTE GOOD FELLOWSHIP BETWEEN HORSEMEN AND A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF HORSES President s Message Hello everyone, I hope that you all are enjoying this beautiful three day weekend and were able to take a moment to remember the meaning of Memorial Day. It is a day for us to give thanks, pay tribute and honor those who gave their lives to protect our country. We all fly our flags proudly, especially today, to show our respect for this ultimate sacrifice. This past month of May was another busy and eventful one for our club. We had our 1 st 5D Playday of the year, with this series running monthly through August! We had 12 riders attend this event, along with a fabulous group of spectators who came out to cheer on the riders & their horses! Cash prizes were awarded at the end of the show, which everyone always loves! It is so exciting to see new faces coming out to our events both participants and spectators who want to see what is going on at our club! Then, we had our 2 nd Schooling Show of the three-show series, and it was again a big success! We had 19 riders turn out to compete, with lots of ribbons and prizes awarded at the end of the day. My thanks again to Liz Kehoe and her crew for organizing this show series for us! I encourage everyone to check out our pictures from these shows on the SCCHA Facebook page! This weekend also was our annual camp-out at the Costa ranch, organized by Norma Tucker. Thank you to Norma for taking on this task and planning out the weekend! June is set to be just as fun and eventful as May, with another full month of events and activities so mark your calendars as follows: **Dedication Ceremony at Rancho San Vicente on Saturday June 3 rd (SEE FLYER!!) **5D Playday on Sunday June 11 th **General Meeting on Friday June 16th **3rd Schooling Show on Sunday June 25th And drum roll please. Our long awaited and anticipated improvements to the arena will be done this week!! The Arena Rock Doc is here and is set to work our arena this week, removing the rocks and improving the footing!! Very excited to finally have this much-needed work done and I encourage everyone to come out and watch the work in progress this week! Connie is pleased with the warm welcome she has received at Santa Clara Horseman's. She has 3 horses. Connie and her late husband Larry brought Josie and Chance, brother and sister ranch Arabians from Montana, where they enjoyed riding many trails. Now she has a mini horse, Oreo, and they hike the local trails together. Many people want to pet him, take pictures and ask questions. As Santa Clara County becomes more urban, she sees Oreo as a goodwill ambassador to reach out to people who are unfamiliar with horses. Welcome Kathryn McKaig! Sponsored by Liz Kehoe. Kathryn grew up in Lake County and got her first horse, Duke, at the age of 12. Through her 20 s, she had the honor of being part of Sid Davis' team (Sid was in his 80s and managed a 5000 acre range with 500 head of cattle) with her horse "The Ghost. She moved to San Jose in 1989, bringing her foundation Quarter Horse, Deacon. They spent many years enjoying the trails of Santa Clara County. Deacon is in his 30s now but she is still able to ride him around a little, which she deeply appreciates. 5

GENERAL MEETING MINUTES May 18, 2017 THANK YOU to our guest speaker, Kelley Krisch of Bayhill Equine, who gave an interesting presentation about colic and worming for you horse. CONGRATULATIONS to Stella Villett, our Juniors President, who graduates from high school! DIRECTOR S REPORTS Treasurer s Report, by Angie Moffatt, as of April 30, Income: $9, Expenses: $6, Net Total: $3, Balance: $6, Savings: 16, Rental Reserve: $1, Schooling Show Reserve: $1, Liabilities: $9, (consists of hall rental deposits to be returned) Expenses included our taxes paid. Horse Events --Rancho San Vincente Park will have a grand opening on June 3 at 10:00 a.m. Our club will ride as a group. Meet with our rigs at the McKean Road parking lot across from Fortini Road. --Costa Campout May 27,28,29. Norma Tucker is coordinating this event. Cost is $30 per person, and please RSVP to Norma. --Schooling Show #2 May 21 st. Liz Kehoe is coordinating this and always could use more volunteers. She plans on volunteers meeting Saturday May 20 to start set up. --Our arena is scheduled to have the Rock Doc come within the next 2 weeks to do rock removal and improvement of our arena. --David Hogg is helping our horse shows with his announcing skills, and he is working on getting a new sound system for our announcer s booth, since our old one is failing. ANNOUNCEMENTS Kitty announced that the Mt. Umunhum grand opening is scheduled for September 15-16, but there are so many participants that they are working on getting a separate day for our club s horse ride up there. 7 THE LOREM IPSUMS Two Successful Schooling Shows Done One more to go on June 25 th! May 21 st was our second in a series of three Schooling shows that the SCCHA is hosting. It was another beautiful day with a good turnout of riders! Thank you to Liz Kehoe and her entire crew of volunteers, judges, and sponsors, for making these shows such a fun success! SPRING

This is one of our annual parade favorites, since Morgan Hill puts on a great parade, and lots of people come out to celebrate our Independence Day! Our club participates as a group mounted unit, and any member is welcome to join in. We will be coordinating our tack and decorations, so be sure to RSVP for this if you plan on participating. Contact Danielle Behning at Morgan Hill, with continuous July 4th celebrations since 1876 remains one of the very few cities in the entire Bay Area that continues to have all day events surrounding the 4th of July. Our events include Patriotic Sing, Downtown Family Street Dance, Freedom Run, Parade, Car Cruise n Show and spectacular Fireworks and entertainment show. Long-Time SCCHA Member Passes Away Our club recently lost a long time valued member, Bernice Verone. I received a nice letter from her daughter, Jennie Verone Robertson, most of which I have included below. It tells us how valuable a member she was to our Association. Our condolences go out to their family. Linda I am writing to you regarding a long time member of the SCCHA. My mom Bernice Verone passed away March 26, 2017 of natural causes. I know there are some members that would like to be aware of her passing. I thought you could place a small article in the Corral Chatter. The following is some information I can remember regarding my parents Gil & Bernice Verone. Bernice Verone was a member of the Horsemen s from the early 60's. Bernice & Gil Verone were very active as past Presidents, vice Presidents, and Secretary of the Horsemen. They also were active with the Junior Horsemen as advisors for many years. They attended all the trail rides to State Conventions. Dad would ride horseback and Mom would drive the truck with all the bedding for the horsemen. They attended and cooked for the Costa weekend rides. They both rode in all the parades, Salinas and at the fairground. They went to all the Percy & Bernice Taylor weekend rides at the coast in Pescadero Dad was past riding unit officer many years. He also would do the cooking for the meetings. They both loved being active in the Horsemen s and we as a family had many years of fun and enjoyment with our horses. Thank You Jennie Verone Robertson mygaljennie18@yahoo.com 9
