Denise Seilstad Fergus County Extension Agent Project Interview Judging Tips *Dress professionally. *Have all of your records up to date- My 4-H Year, Project What I Did What I Learned AND all sections of the Financial Records. Workbook activities should be complete. Bring your record book and workbooks. *Bring your exhibits, with exhibit tags firmly attached. (you will get tags from your club leader) *Arrive 15 minutes prior to your first interview time, check in at the front table in the Trade Center at the Central Montana Fairgrounds. The front table will point you toward your Interview Judge and the waiting area for that judge. *Introduce yourself to your judge and shake their hand. Confirm the project you are interviewing for. Give your record book and workbooks to the clerk. Share your exhibits with the judge. Make sure you have good eye contact and speak clearly and loud enough to be heard. 1) Explain how you made it. 2) What is your favorite thing about the exhibit/project. 3) What was the most difficult part of making your exhibit. 4) What would you do better- what did you learn. 5) What are your goals or plans for this project in the future. 6) Older members should share examples of leadership/teaching in the project area. 2 Animal Project Interviews *Dress professionally. *Have all of your records up to date- My 4-H Year, Project What I Did What I Learned AND all sections of the Financial Records. Workbook activities should be complete. Bring your record book and workbooks. FFA Members please have your SAE records up to date, print them off and bring to the interview. *Check in first at the front table in the Trade Center and then check in at the appropriate animal table (Horse, Livestock, Small Animal). The check in table will give you a rubric form that you will take first to the record check table and then to your judge. *Introduce yourself to your judge and shake their hand. Confirm the project you are interviewing for. Make sure you have good eye contact and speak clearly and loud enough to be heard. 1) Share information about your animal(s). 2) Share information about your feed/nutrition/health program for your animal(s). 3) Talk about what you have learned and what you would do better. 4) Talk about your favorite experiences in the project. 5) Older members should share examples of leadership in the project area. 6) Share your goals for the future in the project area and how you are going to challenge yourself. Animal Education Display Entries You will have a separate interview for your display with a premium judge that awards ribbons. This is separate from your Animal Interview for which you get a certificate. Be sure to find both interviews in the schedule. Premium Money All ribbons, white, red and blue are awarded premium money by the Central Montana Fair. Be sure to come to the Livestock Pavilion between 9:00 AM and Noon on Saturday, July 28, last day of the fair to collect your money in cash. If you can t come, you may send a note with a 4-H parent to pick it up for you, or pick it up at the fair office before August 15.

3 Help Needed There are fair related job appropriate for all ages, sizes, strengths, skills. Please chip in and find a job you would feel comfortable with and give us a call at the Extension Office to volunteer. Many hands make light work! 4-H Food Booth Cleaning Day Saturday, June 14 9:00 AM Bring weed eaters, rakes, wheel barrows, mowers, buckets, rags and brooms. Small Animal Barn Set up Saturday, June 14 11:00 AM All rabbit and poultry exhibitors should attend. Bring wrenches, plyers, sockets, drills, brooms. Pre-Fair Interview Set up July 16 9:00 AM Trade Center We need help setting up tables and chairs and putting up signage. Clerks/Check in Pre-Fair Interviews We need adults to sit at check in tables and direct traffic. We also need adults to sit with the judges and record their results, they will also review the record books and workbooks this year. Dog Show Set Up Sunday, July 22 6:00 PM Gazebo Area Fairgrounds We need help setting up the Dog Show Ring and hauling and setting up agility equipment. All dog members should try and attend and help. Small Animal Barn Clean up Saturday, July 28 Noon Rabbit and Poultry check out has been moved up to noon on Saturday. Please plan on moving your animals and supplies out into trailers and shade and then sticking around to help clean the barn up. If everyone pitches in we will be finished in a couple hours.

4 4-H Food Booth Clean up Saturday, July 28 11:30 AM All clubs need to send at least one adult, more are welcome youth and adults. Food Booth Training Superintendents and Grill Cook please attend. Tuesday, July 17 2:30 You will review the menu and prep of all items and review the jobs and duties you will be assigning to your club members and parents. You will also help unpack and put away supplies so you are familiar with their location. Exhibit Check Out All 4-H Fair Exhibits in the Ag Building 2 nd floor, will be released at 5:00 on Saturday, July 29. Please respect this time and do not begin removing exhibits and decorations early- we want to be welcoming, safe, and attractive for the public to view your 4-H work right up to 5:00. You may also pick up your indoor exhibits the following two weeks, Monday through Thursday during fairgrounds office hours, you will pick up a key from them. The Ag Building will locked at 6:00 PM on Saturday and remain locked on Sunday. You may pick up indoor exhibits the following week Monday- We realize that animals are being released early, but it would be to disruptive to the rest of the fair to release the 4-H Ag Building exhibits. Camping spots must be reserved through the Central Montana Fairgrounds.

5 Gate Passes Season gate passes are $15 or day passes are $5 per day. Season passes can be purchased in the fair office and pre-fair interview day is a great time to get them. Everyone 7 and older pays to get into the fair. The Central Montana Fair, (Fergus County), pays for the 4-H premiums, judges, ribbons, sawdust and provides the facilities for our 4-H exhibits; the gate fee helps off set this expense H Graduates Honored Members from County 4-H that graduated from high school this spring will be honored at 3:45 in the Sale Ring before the sale. We hope can all attend. Graduates are also invited to put their green hand print on the ceiling in the Ag Building. Open Class Fair Opportunities Special youth divisions are available in most open class departments. Please read the fair book carefully for entry instructions/class description and take advantage of this opportunity. Small Animal Round Robin Saturday, July 28 10:00 AM Livestock Pavilion Winners in each age group, Jr. Int. Sr. in Poultry, Rabbit, Cat and Dog will participate in this fun event. Ambassadors Pie Eating Contest Saturday, July 28 11:00 immediately following the Pet Parade Livestock Pavilion Don t miss the excitement and help support your 4-H Ambassador Team! Cloverbud Pet Parade Saturday, July 28 h, 11:00 AM Check in at 10:45 in the Livestock Pavilion. Cloverbuds are welcome to bring any pet that is safe and they can handle. Please fill out the registration form in this newsletter, due June 18. Cloverbuds Visits- Tuesday, July 17, between 9:00 and 11:00 AM, 2 nd floor of the Ag Building *Bring your items for display and visit with a friendly adult that wants to hear all about them! 8 UPCOMING HORSE WORKSHOPS **Please call Erlonna Erickson ( ) to sign up for these workshops ahead of time** Ranch Horse Practice Friday July 6 th, Erickson Arena **Due to the weather cancellations, we have added one more practice** 4:30 p.m.: Levels 3 & 4, Sorting and Patterns with Cattle 6 p.m.: Levels 1 & 2, Sorting, Roping, Patters **Be practicing your pattern and roping at home! Remember in roping you need to call your shots just like we learned in our roping clinic with Scott Grosskopf!** ATTENTION HORSE EXHIBITORS Helmet Requirements/Attire/Tack Helmets must be work by all entrants during Junior Bareback, Trail, Barrels and Poles. No spurs or chaps in any bareback classes. Please read the dress attire and tack requirements carefully in the 4-H Horse Policy Book. You are required to follow these rules to participate as a horse exhibitor. Deviation from these rules is grounds for disqualification. Ranch Horse Show Wednesday, July 18 th, 10 a.m., Erickson Arena in Hobson Rules and patterns are on our web site at Be sure to review them before the show. You will also want to be sure you have read through your Ranch Horse Project Book - the Knowledge Test questions will come from your project book. Bring a picnic lunch and plenty of cold beverages. The show may not finish until later in the evening, so plan to pack something for dinner as well if you need it. The show is on, rain or shine, so bring slickers and umbrellas if it is rainy. Remember to also bring lawn chairs for yourself and spectators. 4-H Horse Show Set-Up Thursday, July 19 th, 4 p.m., Pavilion at the Central Montana Fairgrounds We will need at least 2 older teens/adults from each club to help move/clean bleachers, move panels, etc. Please emily.standley1@montana.edu if you can attend

ATTENTION LIVESTOCK EXHIBITORS Pavilion Set Up for Livestock Monday, July 23 rd, 3:30 p.m. All livestock exhibitors need to help with either set up or clean up. Large Animal Round Robin Thursday, July 26 th, 5:30 p.m., Pavilion Jr. Int. and Sr. winners from Horse, Swine, Sheep, Goat, Beef and Dairy. Pavilion Clean up after Fair Friday, July 27 th, afternoon & Monday, July 30 th, 5:00 p.m. All livestock exhibitors need to help with either set up or clean up. Because of the earlier release time on Friday the 27 th, much of the pavilion clean up will be done that Friday.
