We recently added up all of the years our 29 Volunteers have given to 4-H! They have been helping our Judith Basin County 4-Hers for a combined total of 273 years! Volunteers over the years are why we are able to sustain such a great 4-H program here in JB County. Thank you for all you do! We also would like to thank Jessica Sloan for her time managing the 4-H food booth! She has run the booth 12 of the last 14 years. She is passing the booth on to Jaqlyn Ward from Geyser this year. 2 Available opportunities: MONTANA CONSERVATION CORPS PROGRAM Montana Conservation Corps invites YOU to join us for a summer of camping, hard work, new friends, and cool adventures. You ll team up with a crew of other teens and 2 highly skilled leaders in some of Montana s wildest places. You may find yourself protecting native habitat in Glacier National Park, building fences at Big Hole National Battlefield, maintaining trails in the AbsarokaBeartooth Wilderness, or helping to reduce the threat of wildfire across Montana. You will learn valuable trail, team, and leadership skills, complete 160 volunteer hours, and earn a $200 service award for completing the program. No experience is required, but a commitment to your crew is. Get outside, have fun, and work hard! MCC offers summer expedition programs to teens ages 12 through 17 and is currently in the recruitment process. Program length varies. Visit their website for more information: MONTANA 4-H CONGRESS 4-H Congress will be held July 12-15, 2017 in Bozeman on the MSU Campus. Members aged 13 and older as of October 1, 2016 may apply. New contests have been added this year: Video and Career Communication (formerly known as Interview). This will be a pilot year for these two new contests. Therefore youth participating in these will also have the opportunity to compete in another communication contest (public speaking or demonstration/illustrated talk) in order to compete for award eligibility. YOUTH TRAPPER CAMP This 3 day camp offers youth the opportunity to learn all aspects of trapping from qualified instructors. Held in the Bear Paw Mountains south of Havre in Beaver Creek Park, the camps tentative dates are June 9-11, Fees are $50 per camper with a $20 scholarship available to the first 60 youth applicants that apply by April 15. All meals, snacks, drinks, eating utensils and educational materials are included in the fee. Adults can also attend this is a family oriented camp. Applications are available at the MT Trappers Association website or info@montanatrappers.org or by calling Montana Range Days: Carbon County is hosting the 41st Annual Range Days in Red Lodge June 19-21st. The schedule includes Tours, Workshops, Competitions, Scholarships, Awards and Prizes. 3 Horse Project News: Lewis and Clark County 4-H Practice Show- June17, AM Check In 9 AM Classes Begin 6 PM Show Closes $15.00 Fee for 4-H Members from outside of Lewis and Clark County Entries due June 5th. Late fee of $10.00 will be added to all late entries. Classes include Showmanship, English and Western Horsemanship & Equitation, Bareback, Trail and Western Games with time permitting. MONTANA YOUTH RANGE CAMP The 2017 Montana Youth Range Camp will be held July 10-14, 2017 at the Farmer s Union Camp in the Highwood mountains in Great Falls, MT. Campers age will learn about the value and potential of Montana s largest resource rangeland. Campers will be introduced to 25 of Montana s important range plants, grasses, forbs, and shrubs, and will learn about the interaction of soils, water, plants, wildlife, and livestock on the range. Only 30 applications accepted. John and Candy were instrumental in getting the ranch horse project going in Montana. Awesome opportunity---focus mostly on Horsemanship with some roping. Cattle work/sorting toward the end!! There will be a small fee to cover gas for the Balkenbushes. Monday June 5 9 am-2pm--erickson Arena--Ranch Horse Level 3 and 4 clinic with John and Candy Balkenbush!! Focus on Horsemanship, Cattle Work, and lots of roping like in competition!! Small fee to cover gas for the Balkenbushes. Montana is hosting the 2017 National 4-H Western Heritage Conference and Invitational Shoot in Fort Benton, MT on August 1-3, If you are not aware of this project, it is a combination of 4-H Shooting Sports and a study of the frontier West from 1860 to The project began in Montana in 2008, was accepted as a national 4-H shooting sports project in 2016, and now has a national enrollment of H members. Missouri hosted the past two very successful national conferences and Montana is pleased to host in Approximately H members, parents, and leaders attend annually from around the country. 4 Ranch Horse Practice--Wednesday's at 6 pm starting May 24-June 21 at Erickson's Arena. Levels 1-4 Horsemanship, Roping and Cattle Work/Sorting will be the focus. Each family is asked to provide one horse quality bale of hay or $80 to feed the cattle. Mark August 17 on your calendar as there will be a 4-H Regional Ranch Horse Competition in Fort Benton that day. **Needed ASAP to borrow for the summer---- appoximatley 48 feet of panels for the sorting pens. Winkle panels preferred but any will work as we are short this year!!! Contact Erlonna. lunch so bring a potluck item to go with! Erickson Arena -----There will also be a parent meeting some time during the day as we are going to need help with the State 4-H Horse Show coming to Lewistown September 22-24th!!! With the exception of the ranch horse wednesday night practices--please contact Erlonna at if you are planning to come to any of the other three clinics so we can get an idea of numbers! It is your responsibility to contact Erlonna if weather is questionable!! We are super excited to get the summer started!
