Dear Spirit Squad Candidate & Parent/Guardian, Edmond North Cheer & Pom Welcome Letter Thank you for your interest in trying out for a Cheerleading or Pom Squad at Edmond North High School. We appreciate your enthusiasm and interest in our program and are so excited to see what the new school year holds. Included in this packet you will find information that will explain the try-out process, membership guidelines, and general information that all members (and parents) will need to be aware of before trying out. We take pride in our program and want the very best for all members of each squad. The purpose of the Spirit Squads at Edmond North High School are to promote school spirit, support various organized activities, represent the school, and provide positive leadership in all aspects of school life. These squads will promote and encourage student body involvement and will exemplify loyalty, cooperation, and positive attitudes. This can be a truly rewarding experience for each of you, but it also requires a tremendous time commitment. Cheer and Pom truly is a year round sport!!! A squad member must be willing to practice on his/her own time to perfect skills. Additionally, a squad member must be able to work well with others; as cheer and pom are team sports! Please be aware of this as you prepare to take on the challenges and responsibilities of becoming a member of one of the Edmond North High School Spirit Squads. Parents, please also understand that when your child makes a squad there are some responsibilities on your part as well. Not only do the girls have to work together as a team, so do the parents. This is an all-around team sport and it takes the trust, commitment, and communication of all members, coaches, parents, and administrators to be successful. Once selected for a squad, you will be financially obligated to pay for all expenses that come your way. It s definitely not an inexpensive sport, but as parents, you have to make the commitment to either pay for the items or be willing to organize and participate in fundraisers to offset costs. Candidates wishing to try-out for a position on any spirit squad, and his/her parent(s), must read through the Edmond North Cheer and Pom Handbook, as well as the EPS District Contract that all three Edmond High Schools follow prior to trying out. After reading and being in full agreement, both student and parent signatures are required indicating that, if selected, both agree to abide by the rules and regulations governing the extracurricular activities of cheerleading and pom at Edmond North High School. All colored pages in this packet, as well as the $40 tryout fee, MUST be turned into the finance office at Edmond North High School no later than Wednesday, March 14 th at 3:00pm. There will be no exceptions on this deadline and time, so please make sure to have all items in on time! We are so excited for the year ahead and look forward to meeting you! Thank you so much for considering trying out and GOOD LUCK to each of you!!!! Sincerely, Spirit Squad Coaches Cheer Website: Pom Website: 2

Edmond North Cheer & Pom General Information **All rules & regulations are in addition to the Edmond Public Schools Cheer & Pom District Contract** Squad Member Expectations The primary objectives of an Edmond North Spirit Squad Member are: 1. Be a Leader. A members main job is to promote school spirit and unity, support and encourage student body involvement at sporting events and various school activities, and to provide half time entertainment at sporting events. Members are expected to set an example for the rest of the student body by exemplifying loyalty, cooperation, and positive attitudes, as well as represent Edmond North by acting as positive role models and demonstrating good leadership qualities at all times. Coaches expect all members to set the example in the classroom, hallways, assemblies, games, events, outside of school, in and out of uniform AND on social media (please refer to District Contract Social Media clause). 2. Be Dignified and Responsible. All athletes are expected to conduct themselves with class and dignity, in and out of uniform. Practice good sportsmanship and be in compliance with all rules and regulations. Members behavior is not only a reflection of their values, but also of their family, their school, and this program. Members must be responsible for their actions and hold themselves and their teammates accountable. 3. Be Respectful. Edmond North Cheer and Pom is a family; important to any family is mutual respect. Members will respect all other members of the spirit squad community, including their teammates, coaches, and other spirit squad members. In return, they will receive the respect that they deserve. Additionally, members must respect the authority of all teachers, administrators, and other authority figures. 4. Be Committed. Athletes should take their place in the Edmond North Cheer and Pom program seriously. When a member joins Edmond North Cheer and Pom, they commit to making themselves better every day and they commit to being there for their teammates. Commitment is about being prepared and present, giving every practice full effort, and motivating teammates to do the same. It is also about making the right decisions in the classroom, in the halls, at events, and off of school grounds. Parent Expectations 1. In order for the Spirit Squads to be successful, it takes the cooperation of the parents, participants, coaches, and administrators. 2. Parents are responsible for all financial obligations for camps, clinics, and other expenses involved in this activity during the school year. These expenses can be offset by fundraisers, but it will be the responsibility of the parents to organize and run the fundraisers, not the coaches. 3. Parents need to be aware of the time commitment involved in cheer/pom and need to support their child and coach in these activities to see that he/she fulfills all responsibilities. 4. Understand by the very nature of the activity, cheerleading, dancing, jumping, leaping, tumbling, and stunting carry a risk of physical injury. No matter how careful the participant and coach are, how many spotters are used, or what landing surface is used, the risk cannot be eliminated. The risk of injury includes minor injuries such as muscle pulls, dislocation, and broken bones. The risk also includes catastrophic injuries such as permanent paralysis or even death from landing or falls on the back, neck, or head. As a parent you understand these risks and will not hold Edmond North High School or any of its personnel responsible in the case of accident or injury at any time. You also understand that Edmond North will do everything possible to prevent these risks. 5. Parents and participants must trust and support the decisions and appreciate the time made by the coaches and administrators to always do what s best for the team. Please keep in mind that coaches have other responsibilities and commitments outside of Cheer and Pom, and it is asked that parents and participants respect their personal and professional time. Any questions or problems concerning the squad should be directed to the coaches via . Issues should not be addressed during practices, games, or other school events. Coaches will make every effort to respond to parent questions, concerns, and inquiries during school hours. 15

6. Parent Meeting ground rules: Take turns speaking, all are welcome to speak, minimize sidebar conversations, take care of your needs, and be efficient with your time. 7. There is a proper chain of command, starting with the athlete to coach, parent to coach, then assistant principal, principal, and finally school board. In fairness to all parties involved, please follow the chain of command. Coaches 1. The coaches will work with the squads in the best interest of the team. All coaches want the best for the program and each individual cheer and pom member. 2. Coaches make all final decisions. Discipline, demerits, grades, choreographers, practice times, events, etc. are the responsibility of the coaches. 3. Members experiencing problems should talk with their coach first and work with them in finding suitable solutions. 4. Members should treat the coaches with respect. All coaches work diligently for the betterment of the squad, giving up valuable personal and professional time. 5. Teaching duties of the coach take precedence over cheer and pom responsibilities. Camp 1. The coach will determine the campsite and dates. Summer camp dates will be announced at the mandatory tryout meeting. Families are expected to work around camp when planning summer activities. 2. A squad member can be removed from candidacy if he/she cannot attend summer camp. 3. If you are sick and not at school for practice during the school day, you must do three things. a. You must be checked out through the front office. b. You must submit a miss form on your squad s website. c. To be excused and not receive demerits, a parent needs to also the coach. 4. If a squad member is sick on the day of the event, a parent needs to notify the coach as soon as possible so the absence can be excused. Game/Event Miss/Late Forma. If a squad member needs to miss a game/event, arrive late, or leave early for any reason, a miss/late form must be filled out and submitted online to the coach 24 hours prior to the game/event. Split Squad Eventsa. For all split-squad events, no game misses will be accepted. If a squad member needs to miss a split event they are required to trade an event with another squad member who is not scheduled to go that night in order to ensure a minimum number of squad members at the event. A group message between the original squad member, the squad member switching with, and the coach must be created with documentation of which squad members are swapping events. The group message to the coach must be completed at least 24 hours prior to the event for it to be accepted. 18

Game Conduct 1. The way that the Cheer/Pom squad is perceived by students, parents, and patrons is largely decided at games. Therefore, while performing and cheering at games, Cheer/Pom members are to stay in formation at all times and pay attention to the direction of the squad captains and the coach. 2. Gum chewing, slouchy appearance, jewelry, incorrect uniform pieces or inappropriate dancing, gestures, and language will not be allowed and may result in an immediate benching. 3. If a cheerleader or pom member is out of uniform or in a wrong uniform, they will not be allowed to cheer. They will then sit with the coach. This will result in demerit(s) and a loss of points on the academic grade. 4. If you need financial help, the parent groups may offset cost by organizing and participating in fundraisers if the squad deems it necessary. Only those members who participate in the fundraisers will benefit from the profit. If further financial assistance is needed please speak to a coach or administrator to see what other options are available. Any infraction to the rules may result in demerits, as well as loss of points on your grade and/or benching/suspension given by the coach. Actions & Consequences States: A squad member who accumulates twelve (12) demerits will result in suspension from the squad for the remainder of the year. Please note that the members facing suspension from the squad have had adequate opportunities to earn merits that would offset demerits. Competition Squad States: Competitive members will receive an additional 6 merits at the beginning of the school year to compensate for the additional required practices. In cases of arriving late or leaving early to a practice, if a practice miss/late form is not submitted online 24 hours prior to the practice then it will automatically be considered unexcused and receive a demerit. Missing more than 15 minutes of practice results in an automatic absence and a greater number of demerits given. Absence at Game or Event 4 Demerits Any game or event that a member misses without using a free pass will result in 4 demerits and a zero for that event. If a game/event miss/late form is submitted online 24 hours prior to the game/event it will be reduced to 3 demerits. If a game/event miss/late form is not submitted online 24 hours prior to the event then it will automatically be considered unexcused. Each squad member will only receive 2 free passes per year. 25 Absence at Practice (Practices are considered your school hour, before school, or after school) 2 Demerits If a practice miss/late form is submitted online 24 hours prior to the practice it will be reduced to 1 demerit. It is important that you represent yourself as a positive leader on such websites. Squad members will be given opportunities to earn these merits throughout the year. Merit opportunities must be school or community service related and approved by the coach. Example merit opportunities include: Working the Summer Youth Cheer Camp (June), Various elementary school Family Fun Nights (Sep.-Nov.), Breast Cancer Walk (Oct.), and BALTO decorating days (Feb.)

Community Service Component All Spirit Squad members will be required to serve at a minimum of two service opportunities offered under the Community Service Component. The coach of each squad will provide a list of opportunities for the Community Service Component by the first week in September. The two required service opportunities will be counted as Event grades in the grade book. One (1) merit will be given for each of the two required service opportunities. If a squad member chooses to serve at additional opportunities after their two required, they will earn one (1) merit per hour up to the maximum of six (6), not including GPA merits, for the entirety of the school year. To receive credit for serving, a completed Community Service Form must be turned in to your coach. The purpose of the Edmond North Spirit Community Service Component is to provide opportunities for spirit squad members to positively impact the local community, aligning with the Edmond North High School mission statement, The relentless pursuit of excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service. 27

Edmond North Cheer & Pom Grading Policy Grade Breakdown _ The Cheer/Pom grading policy will reflect the level of a squad member s participation during the semester. Any infraction to the rules may result in loss of points on your grade, demerits, and/or benching/suspension given by the coach. Your grade will be based on the following breakdown: Daily Grade Game/Event 60% Daily 40% _ Every practice is worth 20 pts. Points are based on being on time, dressing out (see below), participation during class time, attitude, cooperation, work ethic, etc. Absences that are unexcused will result in the loss of 20 points for that day. In order for an absence to be excused, a squad member must be checked out through the front office, have filled out a practice miss form online 24 hours ahead of time, and have notified the coach prior to the absence. The coach will determine whether an absence is excused or unexcused. Examples include, but are not limited to: o Excused Absence Sick, family emergency, etc. o Unexcused Absence All-star practice, dance studio practice, doctor or hair appointment, out of town, etc. Required attire for Cheer/Pom class should be brought to class every day (modest shorts or leggings, t-shirt, and cheer shoes(cheer), jazz shoes(pom), and pom/tennis shoes (pom)). Hair and bangs must be secured away from the face, and no jewelry is to be worn. Gum chewing will not be allowed. All members should be dressed out daily unless specified otherwise by the coach. Phones should be placed in the cubbies in the Cheer/Pom room each day upon arriving to class and should not be out or in use during class unless otherwise specified by the coach. Any other obligations that might come up during the year and specified by the coach will be counted for a grade. Game/Event Grade _ Every game or event will be worth 100 pts. For an unexcused absence, a squad member will receive a zero (0). An absence is considered excused if either a game free miss pass has been accepted by the coach and turned in 24 hours in advance or if a parent/guardian has called the coach at least one hour prior to leaving for the event in cases of illness. Any tardy to a practice, game, event, or leaving early from a practice, game, or event may result in a deduction of up to 15 points for the first 15 minutes. At 15 minutes late a member will receive a 75. At 30 minutes a 50 will be received and more than 30 minutes will result in a zero for that practice, game, or event. Since a student is not allowed to drive to any away event, if a squad member misses the bus, she will receive an automatic zero and/or benching for a period of time to be set by the coach. Any uniform violations may result in a deduction of up to 20 points from the event grade. Participants must wear all coach and/or captain-specified uniform pieces. Points could be deducted for, but not limited to, wrong uniform, wrong shoes, hair not up, wrong bow, lack of uniform pieces, wearing jewelry, or arriving without poms to games, as well as not following appearance code according to the Cheer & Pom Handbook both during the school day and at games/events. If a squad member does not bring all required items, not only will she lose up to the 20 points from her grade, but she will be benched for the game and must sit with the coach. Any inappropriate behavior may result in a deduction of up to 20 points from an event grade. Points could be deducted for, but are not limited to, chewing gum, talking during games, getting out of formation, public displays of affection, not sitting in the specified area when sitting out, etc. Squad members are required to dress up on weeks that there are Spirit Days or Dress-Up Days at school to promote school spirit. School dress-up days will be an event grade in the gradebook. Each day is worth 20 points. 28

Edmond North Cheer & Pom Class (Practice) Expectations 1. Respect EVERYONE! This includes ALL coaches, all squad members, your teachers, administrators, classmates, and anyone else you might interact with while you are representing Edmond North at a game, event, school assembly, hallways, classrooms, etc. 2. Practices Attendance is required at all scheduled practices. Practices are considered before school, after school, and during the designated class hour for Cheer/Pom. Making up a test or talking to another teacher is not an adequate reason for missing any portion of practice. Practices will not be planned around those who have jobs, outside activities, or appointments (i.e., gymnastics, dance, competitive team activities/practices, and doctor appointments). Members will be expected to schedule around Cheer/Pom. Cheer/Pom takes priority. Keep a set of practice clothes, cheer shoes, and jazz shoes (Pom Only) in your locker at all times. You must change out every day unless previously notified by your coach. No excuses. No exceptions. Hair and bangs must be secured away from the face. All jewelry must be removed. Gum chewing is not allowed. Keep a lock on your locker. Your coach(es), nor the school, are not responsible for any missing items or damaged items left in an unlocked locker or laying out in the locker room. Respect and listen to your captains at all times. If you have an issue, please talk to your coach. Be kind. There is no room for personal conflicts. Do not bring them to Cheer/Pom. Good AND bad attitudes are contagious! As a squad member it is your responsibility to maintain a positive attitude. Be willing to accept others opinions as well as help others. Stretching and warming up is not optional. Squad members are responsible for their own stretching and warming up unless the coach specifies otherwise. Squad members must warm up and stretch to participate. A squad member should only perform elite skills (lifts, flips, stunts, aerials, etc.) with a coach present. For each day of the week, you will receive 20 points; therefore a typical five-day school week will be worth 100 points. The following will result in loss of points: being tardy, lack of participation, dress code violations, leaving early, etc. Points lost will be up to the coach's discretion. In order to receive all points for practice, squad members must participate in all facets of practice (i.e. dressing out, stretching, dancing, working out, chanting, making signs, hanging signs, listening, cooperating, etc.) Phones are NOT to be out (i.e. in use, charging, etc.) during practice unless specifically allowed by the coach. Phones should be place in the phone cubbies upon entering the Cheer/Pom room to be counted present and must remain there for the duration of the practice unless specified otherwise by the coach. Squad members must ask for permission to leave practice for any reason (i.e. restroom, drink of water, etc.) 29

If a squad member must miss practice, arrive late to practice, or leave early from practice, a Practice Miss Form must be filled out online (Please refer to Game, Event, and Practice Misses for more information). In order to leave the designated period for Cheer/Pom, a member must be checked out by a parent and receive a pass from the front office in order to be dismissed. If a squad member must miss practice, arrive late to practice, or leave early from practice during the school day, two things must be completed: 1. Squad members must fill out a practice miss form at least 24 hours in advance. 2. Squad members must be checked out through the front office. Failing to be checked out through the office will result in a 0% for that day and will get an unexcused absence marked against your attendance. Failing to fill out a practice miss form prior to a missed practice will result in 2 demerits. If you miss practice, but turn in a practice miss form, you will only receive 1 demerit. If you are sick and not at school for practice during the school day, you must do three things: 1. You must be checked out through the front office. 2. You must submit a miss form on your squad s website. 3. To be excused and not receive demerits, a parent needs to also the coach. When a squad member is absent from practice, it is his/her responsibility to learn what was missed on his/her own time. Cheer/Pom requires commitment, so plan on practicing during your class period every day. You will not be permitted to leave early. You must be dressed out and already on the floor stretching within 5 minutes from the time that your coach unlocks the Cheer/Pom room. Your coach will set a 5 minute timer when she enters the room. After the 5 minutes you will receive a tardy and 1 demerit if you are less than 5 minutes late or two demerits if you are more than 5 minutes late. You are given 5 minutes of passing period + 5 minutes extra to get to the Cheer/Pom room, dress out, use the restroom, etc. Keep our facilities clean. Pick up after yourselves. 3. Conduct and Appearance Inappropriate behavior and/or language may result in demerits. Hazing will not be tolerated. Drinking and smoking in uniform, or at any school function will not be tolerated. Absolutely nothing is to be worn with the uniform that is not Edmond North related. An example would be wearing a pink jacket and scarf at school with your uniform. This would not be acceptable. You must always wear the appropriate shoes with your uniform (jazz or cheer/pom shoes). A squad shirt may be designated to wear with the uniform to school on game days. Not following this dress code will result in demerits and loss of points. 30

Edmond North Cheer & Pom Game Day Expectations ***Not following these rules will result in the loss of points and/or demerits for the event grade and possibly being benched during the next game*** 1. Wear appropriate uniform. All squad members must match. This includes, but is not limited to, yoga pants, jackets, spanks, bows, etc. All squad members should bring EVERYTHING required to the game. If a squad member forgets something they are asked to wear, they will sit out, resulting in loss of points and/or demerits. 2. The squad Google Calendar will provide up-to-date times. Use this time to stretch and warm up all tumbling, stunts, turns, jumps, and performances. This time is not to be used for walking around, socializing, etc. Being late will result in a deduction of up to 15 points for the first 15 minutes. At 15 minutes you will receive a 75, at 30 minutes a 50, and more than 30 minutes will result in a zero for that practice, game, or event. Also, if you are 1 to 5 minutes late you will receive 1 demerit. More than 5 minutes late will result in 2 demerits. 3. No talking during the game. Squad members are there to watch the game and cheer on the athletes and fans. Squad members should always be in attention stance. 4. ONLY the assigned person or captain will call the chants. Squad members should not tell the assigned person or captain what to call. Whatever the assigned person or captain says during the game goes (unless they call a defense for offense or vice-versa). 5. Squad members should not go over the chant/drumline motions before the chant. (It looks really tacky) If a squad member does not know a chant or drumline, they should sit out and learn it after the game. 6. During the National Anthem there should be absolutely NO talking! Squad members should be standing in attendance looking at the American Flag the entire time. 7. Squad members must be respectful to the other team, their squads, and their fans. 8. Remember Cheer/Pom are Spirit squads so squad members are there to cheer on the team and fans. Between EVERY quarter Cheer/Pom MUST do a chant. No exceptions, no excuses. 9. Game Miss Forms MUST be filled out online at least a WEEK PRIOR to the event being missed. Game misses are granted on a first come, first serve basis. Freshman squads allow 2 free misses per full squad event and Varsity squads allow 4 free misses per full squad event. 10. If a squad member must miss more than two event and have already used the two free game misses, the squad member must still submit a game miss form to the coach a week prior to that event in order to not receive the full demerits (the squad member will still receive a 0 for that event grade, but by turning in the game miss form the squad member will only receive 3 demerits vs. 4) 11. Varsity Only GAME TRADES for all split squad events NO game misses will be accepted. Squad members must obtain a cover for their position if they need to miss in order to ensure the scheduled amount of squad members will be at the event. A group message with both members and coach must be submitted. 12. Squad members are role models. There are a lot of little kids around at games so squad members should watch their words, actions, and take pride in the position they hold. Squad members represent their squad, their coach, their parents, and their school. 13. When riding on a bus to any event, please remember the following rules: Squad members must remain seated at all times. Squad members should never throw anything out of the windows. (This is a felony and violators will get in trouble. This comes along with an $800 fine no matter what is thrown out of the window plus legal actions. If the violator break someone's window or harms a car they will be the one responsible for all expenses.) Squad members should never do any inappropriate gestures or actions outside the windows. 14. Smile and have fun! If the spirit squads are into the game then the fans will be more inclined to get into the game as well. Even if the fans aren t cheering try anything to get them excited winning or losing!!! 31

Squad members should not be socializing during this time. Squad members should be on the corner of the court no later than 1 minute prior to the game, unless otherwise noted by the coach. 6. **Varsity Only** At away games you only have half time off. Be back to your designated area no later than two minutes before third period and on the court one minute BEFORE the third period starts. 7. During EVERY full time out Cheer/Pom MUST be ON the court doing a chant. During EVERY thirty second time out Cheer/Pom MUST do a chant from the side line (squad members should angle toward the crowd). Between EVERY quarter Cheer/Pom MUST do a chant ON the court (or do a drumline). 8. EVERY time squad members go on or off the court they must SPIRIT! Examples include clapping hands, showing number one, yelling Go Huskies, tumbling, etc. Members should show excitement and encourage the fans to be spirited. 9. If our team makes a basket CHEER! (This means jumping, spiriting, kicking, whatever shows that you are pumped that we scored!!!) 10. Squad members should always do the Husky Fans chant after the girls and guys game! 32

Edmond North Cheer & Pom Wrestling Specific Expectations 1. Must be there 15 minutes before the dual starts; unless previously notified. Always check the calendar for up-todate times. 2. Squad members should not talk during the match. Spirit squads are there to watch the match and cheer on the athletes and fans. Squad members should always sit with their legs crossed. 3. At the beginning of every dual, squad members will line up on the edge of the mat as wrestlers are announced one by one. Sometimes the wrestlers will come down the line and high five squad members. Squad members need to recognize each wrestler by clapping, cheering, etc. after each name is called. 4. At the beginning and end of every match, squad members need to stand up and clap/cheer on the wrestler. Squad members should continue standing when one match is over as the next wrestler is announced. 5. At the end of every match, squad members need to stand up and clap/cheer. If our team won that match squad members need to step forward and do a jump, kick, standing back, basket toss, etc. 6. PAY ATTENTION- Wrestling matches can end very quickly! The captain/assigned person should always start a chant immediately after the squad sits down and the match begins. Squad members must pay attention because they will need to stand up as soon as the match is over. Also, squad members should pay attention so they can quickly move out of the wrestler s way, as needed. 7. All phones should be in put away in squad member s bags and on silent. 8. If we win a match CHEER! (This means jumping, spiriting, kicking, whatever shows that you are pumped that we won!!!) 33

Edmond North Cheer & Pom Game Time Etiquette WHEN TO CHEER When your team is introduced or comes out on the court or field; also, clap when your opponent's team is introduced. When time-outs are called, during half-times, quarters, or periods. When your team has made an exceptional play or drive. When a player is leaving or coming into the game. When an injured player gets up. When your team is on OFFENSE or DEFENSE, do an appropriate cheer. When the game is close. When your team scores. WHEN NOT TO CHEER When a player is injured. When your team commits a foul against the other team. When either team is in huddle. When a team makes a mistake or is penalized. When the opposing team's band is playing. When signals are being called. When you hear negative or insulting chants from the crowd or fans. During important announcements. While the other squad is cheering. OTHER POINTS TO REMEMEBER Make sure you know when your team is on offense or defense. It is a nice gesture to welcome the opposing team. Show tact if your team is ahead and act gracefully if they are behind. Remain happy, vibrant and energetic to the very end. The entire team should be focused on the game, not each other. Talking should be kept to a minimum and all eyes should be on the game and the players when not on the crowd. INJURY TIME-OUTS When a player is injured, it is correct and courteous to take one knee and stay there in a relaxed and quiet stance until the player has left the field. If the player needs to leave the field, celebrate their play and show support by clapping until they have left the field. 34
