Volume 41, Issue 12 December 2014 Activities Report December 2014 Wow! We are closing in quickly on the end of another year. Tech Sessions continue to draw good crowds an indication of how many of us got started with these little cars. Our other events also continue to grow an indication of the success of the Tech Sessions! With only two dates left on the calendar, I hope you have found something of interest during the year. While I enjoy planning these events, the fun part is having all of you along for the ride. I enjoy the company and thank you for coming out to play in the streets. Didn't our mothers warn us against such activities? [Date] Coming up on Tuesday evening, December 9 th, we have our annual Holiday Lights drive through the Botanical Gardens. In years past, many have enjoyed dinner at Franco s (Norview& Military Highway) before the drive. I have reserved 30 seats for dinner that night, beginning at 6pm. Come on in and enjoy a good meal. Or meet up in the parking lot outside the restaurant at about 7:15-7:30 and we ll take off from there. There has been no advanced ticket sale in the last few years, so plan on paying at Santa s workshop at the Gardens. Our Holiday Party follows a few days later on Saturday the 13 th at Jim and Betty s home in Virginia Beach. Many thanks for their generous hospitality. The party is in lieu of our normal monthly meeting and will start at 6pm. You can help out by bringing a favorite dish to share. Also, as is our custom, we have chosen a charity to support as a group for anyone wanting to join in. This year we have chosen Samaritan House, which just marked their 30 th year of support for adult and child victims of domestic abuse. A copy of their wish list was ed earlier. If you did not get the mailing or are not online, please let me know and I can send a printed copy. (Editor s note: see page 11 of this issue!)for simplicity s sake, small denomination gift cards are always appreciated, as they offer Samaritan House flexibility throughout the year. Gifts and gift cards can be brought to the party and will be delivered the following week to Samaritan House lies just ahead. We have 8 meeting sites set 4 meetings and 3 Tech Sessions to fill. If you are interested in hosting, please let me know. We appreciate your support of these club activities! Also on the schedule are drives of varying length in February (Valentines Day), March 14 th, April (Wine Tour), May 27 th and 28 th, June 5-6 th, August 23 rd, September (Fall Tour), October and December. We have some new events and will return with some of the old favorites. The national shows are in June (NAMGBR and NAMGAR), and regional shows will finalize their dates over the next few months. Poor July and November may be feeling left out perhaps our two surprise dates will fall in those months. Details will be released at the Holiday Party. So be on your good behavior and see what new parts Santa leaves in your stocking this year. You have a few short weeks to get your car in order it s almost time to hit the road again. A quick note from a sleepless night over the weekend I was channel surfing late last night and bounced back and forth between American Pickers and Wheeler Dealers. The pickers were in the off-site storage for the Car and Carriage Museum in Luray (see Raid on Harpers Ferry Tour write-up, November Dipstick) and found many interesting artifacts that didn t quite meet the theme of the museum. At the same time over on Velocity, Mike and Ed were freshening up a Frogeye Sprite. Given the time of day, I m sure both were reruns, but it made for an entertaining transition from late night to very early morning. Until we meet again on the 9 th and 13 th, enjoy the ride! Tad Carter

Welcome again to all those who joined in From meetings to car shows and tech sessions to get you to the next TMGC event, the club should have racked up enough miles to us to Abingdon and back! 3 TMGCC Nov. 5, 2014 Meeting Minutes Recorded by Bruce Easley/Photos by Don Ladd After our traditional Kick Tyres social period and the garage, driveway, cul de sac and Davidoski house were full, the Prez, Steve LaPaugh, called the meeting to order sometime around the correct start time. He initially asked if there were any guests or new members. Hillary Pavlidis, daughter of member Jack Pavlidis, joined as a new member with her 1980 MGB. She also has a 1960 MGA in the works being restored. Member Billy Stutz introduces his guest Ashley. Always great to have guests and additions to the MG family! We also gained a new member, Dennis Sobata! The October meeting minutes were approved. Thank you, Robert Perrone. The Vice report (Vice Prez), also by Robert Perrone: I ve got nothing, along with the traditional shouldershrug. However, rather than leave it at that simplistic lead in, he called our attention to an MG Driver Magazine article by member Mark Davidoski. Rob has a copy to share, but it turns out he got his copy quite a bit after everyone else old news. Nonetheless, congrats to Mark for making the big time. Our Pecuniary Poobah (Treasurer), Jim Villers, reported that after payouts for roster and dipstick mailing, we have $2, in the treasury. A smart, honest, dedicated treasurer is priceless!! Despite the many catcalls for party, party, Jim will hold us off for a major festive event. Our Activities calendar is major lots of things in the plans. On Nov. 16 a group will be attending a Neil Simon play at the Hanover Theater, preceded by a great dinner at the Rose and Crown. On Dec. 9, we ll do our traditional Holiday Lights drive through the magical and amazing Christmas light display at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. Be there for dinner at Franco s Italian Restaurant for some great food prior to the drive. Our annual Christmas Bash will be at Jim and Betty Villers on Dec. 13. Our thanks to them for opening up their beautiful house for the event. Everyone should bring a dish to share with the group. As always, the club will be supporting a good charity for the season. PLEASE every member contribute funds or gifts for the Samaritan House charity. Tad distributed flyers with Gift Suggestions for the charity. There are infants, preschoolers, school age youths, and Parents who need support and for whom there is an opportunity to help is fast approaching. Mark your calendar for our first meeting of the year at Frankie s Place for Ribs on January 7. Our Historian, Susan Bond, said It s Here! and displayed the binders of pictures and memorabilia for the last few years that she brought with her is in the works; get your pictures or info in to her if you have something appropriate for the History files. 3

Bill Yoshida, our Membership coordinator, reported that we have 115 paid memberships, and 185 cars, not counting our newest member, with a few promises in the works. He handed over the latest dues money to the Treasurer. He suggested that members keep a printed copy of the club home page with them, to put on the windshield of MGs with which we may come into contact, to let them know of the Universe of Information available to them via the TMGCC and other support groups. The Regalia raffle drawing proceeded with $68 in collections, for a $34 payout for first place. Consolation prizes were several, including the traditional first in line for the delicious spread of food offered by the Davidoskis. Big Bill Yoshida got the drawing for the big bucks, Bill Olcheski got the coveted license plate holder reward, Robert Perrone got a nice MG fridge magnet, and PJ Peterson (be sure to ask about the PJ nickname it was revealed at the meeting) got First in Line! There is also a catalog available with various articles of MG clothing and specialty articles, as well as items that David Kinsey has on hand for sale. See Dave if you are in need of that special Marque item. Woo hoo! For our recent Technical Session at the Bonds, much good work was done. Old business none. New business our wonderful North Country members Alan and Beckey Watson sent us Happy Guy Fawkes Day remembrances. Before adjourning, Steve LaPaugh mentioned a good book, It Came with Oil, as a recommended reader about classic cars. It s available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or as a possible loan from Steve. Meeting adjourned!! Hit the delicacies and the frosty beverages! Donec varius, felis eget lobortis vehicula, magna sapien elementum tellus, 4

FALL TECH SESSION the 2014 Version. By Terry Bond The traditional November tech session was another success. What threatened to be a very wet, windy, cold day turned out to be pretty decent. Rains finally subsided in the morning just in time for the first arrivals. Hot coffee proved welcome and the donuts went fast! It was fortunate that the high winds the week before had succeeded in dropping most of the bumper crop of huge acorns. They were on the ground rather than bouncing off cars! By 11AM the driveway and yard were full of cars and the barn was full of MG ers trying to stay a bit warmer. I think hot coffee was the preferred drink this year, but a good selection of beers did go down well with the BBQ, chili and sandwich fixins at lunch, especially as we opted to host the eaters inside the house rather than on the deck. Still, the occasional acorn dropping out there made us glad we chose the opposite of al fresco. So there was indeed a bit of tech taking place. Pete Olson managed to resolve several issues thanks to Frank Linse s magic touch, and he also came away with some good ideas for some longer term fixes to some lingering MG maladies. There were of course some Lucas things that got attended to, and a few bungie cords replaced with proper phillips head screws, so all the cars managed to depart under their own power. There seemed to be a larger number of modern cars than usual parked out front, and with the weather not so great outside of our immediate area, we couldn t fault anyone for coming in alternate transportation, especially the Cummings who chose a modern Mustang over an older MG for their long trek to Great Bridge from Williamsburg. As always, a trip through the museum was an added attraction and some of the new finds from this year s big Hershey swap meet in PA produced new stories. We always enjoy playing tour guide and hosts. Many thanks to those early arrivals who went to work helping to set up some tables and get the feast ready. After a ride in Eleanor, Joyce Cummings helped with lunch, assisted by Dana Reisse. We had so much fun I think we ll do it again. Perhaps it will be warm enough next year for some Model T Ford rides. We recall seeing the following members milling about with screwdriver and beer in hand Bill Blair, Terry & Susan (of course!),tad Carter, Craig & Joyce Cummings, David Ford, Jim & Linda Freeh, Mike Haag, Ray Hicks (bringing his MGA out of hibernation), Mathieu Houvinen, Donald Ladd, Frank Linse, Pete Olsen, Jack Pavlidis, Robert Perrone, Dan Ray, Bob & Dana Reisse, Bob Ross, John Terschak, Barry Tyson, Andy Wallach, Roy Wiley, Bill Yoshida. Lots of customers Words of Wisdom! 5

Playing Our Song By Jim Villers/Photos by Susan Bond It was a cold overcast and blustery morning as the line of British cars departed the Lake Wright parking area and proceeded briskly up I 64 heading for a matinee performance of Neil Simon's "They're Playing Our Song" at the Virginia Repertory Theater at the Hanover Tavern. Our progress regressed to a crawl as road construction trucks and a lone worker clogged the left lane. Recovering from the delay, Tad put the hammer down as we sped up the Interstate, exited onto some familiar county roads at Williamsburg and arrived at the Rose and Crown Tavern in New Kent Courthouse only a few minutes behind schedule. Lunch was an assortment; Robert had Bangers and Mash, Donald and Rip had breakfast fare of omelets and French toast, Jim had a hamburger while Fish & Chips and salads filled out the rest of our table. What an enjoyable performance. "Playing Our Song" is an old musical comedy standard exploring the challenges of a loving relationship between a composer and a lyricist.an upbeat performance of seventies song and dance with a Saturday Night Fever spirit. It even featured a MG Midget on stage (or at least enough parts to represent a car). It was just fun. The trip home began with a pleasant twilight drive to West Point for a dinner stop of fast food fare. The final dash for home encountered rain and a normal I 64 slow down. Attending were Tad & Karen Carter, Mark & Kathy Davidoski, Jim & Betty Villers, Donald Ladd, Russ Ripp, Robert Perrone& Caroline Remeika, Susan & Terry Bond, Mike & Denise Haag, Andy & Cynthia, Mike & Jennifer Ashe with Kevin & Diane Kean.
