1 The Aubie Tribune The Official Auburn Tigers Kids Club Newsletter January 2013 Getting to Know... Alex Kozan - Football #63 Freshman Offensive Line Castle Rock, Colo. & Jay Wade - Baseball #15 Junior Right-Handed Pitcher Bremen, Ga. What is your favorite Auburn Tradition? Can t beat Tiger Walk. What is your guilty pleasure? Chocolate Ice Cream Do you have a favorite dance move? The two-step, I m a pretty simple guy. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be and why? My height so I could play left tackle. If I was smarter, I would love to be smarter. You can never be too smart. What do you miss the most about your hometown? I grew up in a town of 500 people, so I knew everybody. It was bittersweet leaving it. If you could have one superpower what would it be? To fly, because I m pretty slow. What is the one thing you cannot live without? My phone to keep in touch with my friends. What is it like playing in Plainsman Park? It s great being here. This will be going on my third year, and just seeing the regulars come, the new fans and just seeing the stadium and parking deck filled up. Being in Auburn in general is an amazing feeling. Tiger Scoreboard Equestrian Ranked #2 Men s Women s Ranked #9 Ranked #11 *All results as of December 18, 2012 For the most up to date results visit Results in parenthesis are from Southeastern Conference play.
2 Keeping Fit with Aubie Snowman on a Stick Ingredients: Bananas Grapes Carrot Apple Bamboo skewers Mini chocolate chips Pretzel sticks Directions: For each snowman, you will need three thick slices of banana, a grape, a sliver of carrot, and a triangular piece of apple. (Tip: Poke a hole in the apple piece with a bamboo skewer first to make assembly easier.) Have your kids slide the fruit onto the skewer, then use the carrot slivers for noses, mini chocolate chips for eyes and buttons, and pretzel sticks for arms. Adapted December 18, 2012 from recipes/snowman-stick The Facts on Healthy Snacks Do you think snacking means crunching chips, munching marshmallows, or chowing down on cookies? Lots of people think snacks mean foods that aren t nutritious. But snacks can be healthy, too. And healthy snacks are more likely to give you the energy and the nutrients you need. An orange will give you quick energy now and vitamin C for later. A pile of potato chips, on the other hand, contains lots of calories and fat, something that most kids don t need a lot of. Some foods, such as whole-grain foods, also will help you feel more full for longer. So a whole-grain muffin will stick with you longer than a candy bar. It s also easy to overeat candy or chips and they contain a lot of calories. That s not to say you can t have a candy bar or chips once in a while, if you like them. But try to make your regular snacks more nutritious. If you re feeling mildly hungry, maybe a piece of fruit will do the trick. But if you re feeling hungry at snacktime, and dinner is still a long way off, try a pita stuffed with veggies, cereal with milk, oatmeal, or an English muffin pizza. 4 Antartic Audtions: Penguin Craft What you ll need: Black and white glossy acrylic paint Plastic soda or water bottles (we used 12-ounce, 1-liter, and 2-liter bottles) Styrofoam balls (2- to 3-inch diameter) Black and yellow craft foam sheets Tacky glue Masking tape (optional) Butter knife Googly eyes (we used 3/4- to 1-inch diameter) Funnel Sand Small doll accessories (optional) Child s socks (optional) Permanent marker Auburn Craft Corner How to Make It: For each penguin, pour two parts black paint and one part water inside a bottle (we used 1 to 4 tablespoons of paint depending on the size of the bottle). Screw on the cap and shake the bottle to coat the sides. Remove the cap and save it for later. On the outside of the bottle, paint a white oval from the spout to the bottom. Dry overnight (the inside may be slightly wet in the morning). Coat a Styrofoam ball with black paint and let it dry. Cut two wings from the black craft foam and a beak and feet from the yellow craft foam (you can download our template. Glue the wings and feet to the bottle as shown and let them dry. If needed, use masking tape to hold the wings in place as they dry. With the knife, bore a hole in the Styrofoam ball big enough to fit the neck of the bottle. Glue on googly eyes. Make a small slit below the eyes, insert a few dabs of glue, then slide the beak into the opening. Funnel sand into the bottle to weigh it down (we used 1 to 2 cups depending on the bottle s size). Replace the cap and press the Styrofoam head on top. If you like, dress the penguin in doll accessories or use kids socks to make your own. For a hat, snip a 6- to 8-inch length from a sock and knot one end. For a scarf, cut a 1½-inch-wide loop from a sock, snip it open, and fringe the ends.
