1 Dear Students and Parents, Thank you for your interest in the Poway High School Cheerleading program. Tryouts for the school year are quickly approaching. Students who are selected must be prepared to be leaders in their school and community as well as assuming additional responsibilities as a cheerleader. The PHS Cheerleaders will receive many valuable and rewarding educational and athletic experiences that they will remember long after they leave Poway High School. These activities will not only channel their enthusiasm and spirit in a constructive and beneficial manner, but will give them a sense of pride and accomplishment in being a part of their team and their school. To be able to participate in the tryout process, you must complete the online registration prior to the first day of workshops, complete all forms from this packet along with obtain a Ticket to Play. Please see the checklist at the end of this packet for further details. In order to learn the tryout material a cheerleading workshop will be held over 2 days prior to tryouts. These workshops will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday May 29th and 30th from 4:00 to 6:30pm at Poway High School in room U-1 (small building between the gym and baseball field). Check in will begin at 3:30 each day. Each cheerleader will be given a number during workshops and will be assigned a tryout time on Wednesday May 30th during workshops. There will be a mandatory parent meeting for everyone who makes a team on Thursday June 7th at 6:30pm in room N3-210 to discuss more specific details of the season. 2 Leigh McDonough Head Coach Ninon Oppel Assistant Coach (949) (619) POWAY HIGH CHEERLEADING RULES AND REGULATIONS CHEERLEADING PRINCIPLES Poway High School, the school district, and the community endorse involvement in cheerleading activities that contribute to the healthy, supportive and interactive school culture at the high school level. Membership on a cheer squad offers a unique opportunity for personal growth, leadership, and involvement in diverse activities. The attitude, dedication, trust and enthusiasm of the cheerleaders are just as important as the skills involved in cheerleading. Members of the cheer squad must be committed to the highest levels of athleticism, performance, self-discipline, respect for the school and others, personal exemplary conduct and performance of all responsibilities related to the pursuit of school spirit and pride. Furthermore, cheerleaders must demonstrate a proven ability to balance academic requirements and demands with extra-curricular and personal activities. CHEER PROGRAM PURPOSE Promote and uphold school spirit, unity, and pride. Represent Poway High School in an upstanding manner. Set an example of good behavior and sportsmanship at all times (whether in uniform or not) Promote friendship with each other and with other schools. Promote the development of lifelong values and skills. CHEER PROGRAM CODE OF ETHICS Emphasize the ideals of sportsmanship, ethical conduct and integrity. Abide by all school, district and league rules as well as the rules set for by the cheer program. Show respect and courtesy to all teammates, visiting teams, competitors and officials. Respect the integrity and judgment of your captains, coaches and advisors Any type of gossip, negativity, use of illegal substances, weapons, threats, bullying, etc. will not be tolerated CHEER PROGRAM RULES AND REGULATIONS Cheerleaders, like all student-athletes, are governed by District Policy, school rules, and the Poway High School Athletic Handbook. In addition, a Poway High Cheerleader will be respectful at all times to herself, teammates, coaches, and all other adult advocates. They will support their teammates by saying only positive and encouraging words. They will not use abusive or foul language. A Titan athlete thinks first for the team and secondly for themself. They will be a scholar first and an athlete second. They will follow all school and team rules to Page 2! of! 11

3 the best of their ability. They will give 100% effort and maintain a positive attitude. Last but not least a Titan cheerleader will be a role model for other athletes and will represent their school in a manner that will reflect dignity, honor and pride. Practices: 1. Attendance: Cheerleaders are required to attend all practices. Cheerleaders must be on time, if you are late there will be consequences (running, conditioning or counting towards an absence if constant). If you know you are going to be late, you must notify a coach prior to practice. Cheerleaders will be allowed 4 total absences throughout the season (this includes football games, basketball games, and events as well) anything after 4 will result in a parent/cheerleader meeting and this could determine if the cheerleader will be allowed to remain on the team. Each absence will result in the cheerleader coming in full uniform and having to sit out the entire following game. Cheerleaders will be required to fundraise during this time (i.e. sell scarves, jamba juice cards, pass out sponsor flyers, work snack shack, etc ) Therefore, all cheerleaders are expected to manage their time effectively between work, school, and other extracurricular activities. The ONLY absences that will be excused are extended sickness (hospital/dr. note stating they cannot cheer), and prescheduled commitments (coaches must be notified by 1 st parent meeting after tryouts). If you are involved in any outside activity or sport (i.e. all-star cheer, track, gymnastics, ASB, drama, etc ) coaches must be notified in the beginning of our season and then again when said activity or sport season starts to make sure there are no conflicts with practices, competitions, events, or games. Cheerleaders are expected to communicate with their other coaches or teachers about their commitment to Poway cheer. Coaches must be informed 24 hours in advance regarding circumstances that may cause an absence (or ASAP if an emergency). Absences need be communicated via phone call by the parent to a coach. Due to the fact that Varsity will be competing this year, please note extra practices will be scheduled. These will most likely be, but not limited to, extended Monday and Wednesday practices and added Saturdays as competition season gets closer. *MISSING EVEN ONE PRACTICE IMPACTS THE ENTIRE TEAM* 2. Participation: Every practice is crucial to a cheerleader s skill progression, safety, and growth. Repetitive movement and strength, training and conditioning will give a solid base to each cheerleader. Practices are an opportunity for improvement not only for one self, but within the team. Cheerleaders will be expected to work as a team and/or independently depending on the agenda for that day. When working with a coach, as a group or individually, cheerleaders will be required to put forth their full effort. Athletes who have mastered some or all skills/routines will be expected to assist other teammates when directed to do so by a coach. One on one focus may or may not be possible through an entire practice depending on the amount of athletes at certain levels. JV and Varsity teams will work together and offer support at various times throughout the season so that the team can progress rapidly and safely as a whole. ALL cheerleaders are required to help with cheer mats. Page 3! of! 11

4 3. Attire: Cheerleaders must attend all practices wearing appropriate form fitting clothes with hair pulled back. Practice tops must be in Titan colors. A sports bra is highly recommended. NO jewelry. NO spaghetti straps/camisoles or low cut shirts. NO crop tops. NO acrylic nails, but polish is okay (nails should be kept short). Inappropriate clothing will result in sitting out during practice. Cheer/athletic shoes ONLY, no slippers, street shoes, or flip flops. Game Day: 4. Attendance: MUST be on time...showing up late to a game will result in being benched during the 1st quarter. Cheerleaders who miss a game without contacting a coach will be benched the following game (See attendance policy above). Come dressed ready to cheer, hair up with bow, make-up (if you choose) done, must have cheer shoes on, no flip flops, street shoes or slippers. If you come to the game unprepared you will be benched 1st quarter. Both JV and Varsity cheerleaders must attend every game in its entirety. Cheerleaders must stay with the team during the full duration of each game. The only exception for not being ready to cheer is for Varsity at AWAY GAMES ONLY. They are allowed to get ready during the JV game. During basketball season, if you miss a game you will be required to make up the absence by cheering at the next unassigned game. (i.e. if you are on the green team, you will cheer for a grey team day) If you choose to not make up the game and/or miss more than 2 basketball games we will have a parent conference to determine placement on team for rest of the season including the end of the year banquet. Any conflicts need to be brought to the coaches before the start of the basketball season. If needed, coaches and parent/cheerleader will sit down to solve the issue. 5. Attire: Full uniform will be worn; shell, liner, skirt, GREEN briefs, CHEER shoes, no show white socks, Bow must be forward facing on top of your head. Hair can be half up or in a ponytail, but bow must be forward facing. Bras and underwear may not show at any time. If you are missing any part of your uniform it will result in being benched the entire game. BE PREPARED!! Full uniform includes Poms. 6. No cell phones allowed during practices, games, or events unless approved by the coaches. ALL ATTENDANCE RELATED CONSEQUENCES WILL BE LEFT TO THE DISCRETION OF THE COACHES Events - DRAFT This is a draft of MANDATORY events and is subject to change. It is imperative that you regularly check the Shutterfly calendar and team s for the most up to date information. YOU MUST PLAN ANY EVENTS, DOCTOR S APPOINTMENTS, OTHER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES, OR COMMITMENTS ACCORDINGLY. YOUR PARTICIPATION IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO THE SUCCESS AND ENJOYMENT OF THE TEAM AND YOUR TEAMMATES. June/July camps STRONGLY encouraged!!! Page 4! of! 11
