S E A S O N O U T L O O K The Golden Gopher women s gymnastics team has many things to be proud of after the 2005 season, and the gymnasts and coaches have taken the success of last season and transformed it into great motivation to reach even higher in the 2006 season. We are very pleased with last season, especially after losing Angela Walker and her four routines early in the season, explained co-head coach Jim Stephenson. Other gymnasts stepped up, and improved the quality of their performances, and gained valuable experience. Everyone s dedication and hard work allowed us to move up 11 spots in the season s final rankings, and moved us back into the top 25. Not only did the Gophers move up in the national rankings, they also moved up two places at the NCAA Regional Championship, finishing fourth, and moved up one spot to third at the Big Ten meet. The sense of accomplishment from last season has sparked the team, said co-head coach Meg Stephenson. The team is so motivated, they stayed on campus all summer to get ready for this season. They are very prepared to take another jump this year. This year s squad has a different look than last season, despite losing only one gymnast to graduation. The reason is that the Gophers have added four freshmen to the mix, making for a team of 16 gymnasts, equaling the largest team that the Stephensons have coached at Minnesota. We have four spectacular freshmen, and the quality and depth of this year s team has pushed everybody to get better, said Meg Stephenson. Our athletes are performing beautiful gymnastics, and the difficulty in our routines is comparable to any team in the country, added Jim Stephenson. The senior class this season consists of three very seasoned gymnasts in Laura Johnson, Maria Opsahl, and Kelly Stout, and all of them are leaders. Our seniors are all such strong leaders this season, in and out of the gym, commented Meg Stephenson. Johnson has been an All-Big Ten performer in every year of her career. Last season, qualified to compete in the NCAA Championships as an individual, and hot all four routines at the national meet. She had the team s highest average score on bars last year, and was the team s only all around competitor after losing Angela Walker to injury. Laura was absolutely stellar at the NCAA Championship last season, raved Jim Stephenson. She had the best meet of her season, she rotated with Georgia, the team that won the national title, and she held her own with them. She was an excellent representative for Minnesota. Opsahl will again serve as a team captain, marking the first time in the Stephenson era that there has been a two-year captain. Opsahl had the team s highest average floor score last season, and is working three events with upgraded difficulty in all her routines. Stout served as a back-up on floor and vault season, and will fill the same role in 2006 with an upgraded vault. Kelly provides such great leadership for our team, said Meg Stephenson. She is a great example for our underclass athletes. Stephanie Funk, Kelly Ganchan, and Kim Womack make up this year s junior class. Funk leads this group, as the coaching staff calls her the most consistent performer. She is training on the bars, beam, and floor, and has upgrades to all her routines, including a new floor routine. Ganchan is also training on three events, the beam, vault, and floor, and has increased the difficulty of her vault. 4

S E A S O N O U T L O O K Like Funk, Womack has a new floor routine this season, and has upgraded her vault. She was a regular performer on the bars, vault, and floor last season, and is training all three events again this year. Andy Cornelius and Ashley Stanton are the team s redshirt-sophomores. Both sat out the 2004 season to rehabilitate injuries, and competed for the first time last season. Cornelius was a regular performer on the bars last season, but is now training on all four events. We are the most excited about Andy s progress, she is a possible all arounder for us this year, said Jim Stephenson. She has worked so hard, we are so proud of her. Stanton had the team s highest average beam score last season, and was also a consistent performer on the floor. She has upgraded the tumbling in both routines to compliment her outstanding dance and performance skills. Stanton is also training on the vault, learning a new vault after recovering from her knee injury two years ago. The rest of the sophomore class consists of Amanda Miles, Ashley Mutchler, Rehana Russell, and Angela Walker. Three of these four are training on all four events. Amanda Miles was a regular in the beam lineup last season, and is training all four events this year. The coaches are very pleased with her steady improvement. Ashley Mutchler won a Big Ten title on the vault in 2005, and competed in three events, the vault, beam, and floor as a freshman. She is now training on the bars as well, and the coaching staff believes there s a good possibility that Mutchler will compete in the all around. Russell was a consistent competitor on the bars last year, and is training on the bars and the floor in preparation for the 2006 season. She is working to upgrade her bars routine. Walker suffered a knee injury in the competition at Washington last year, and missed most of the season to have her knee repaired and start rehabilitation. She is training on all four events, and has managed to add difficulty to her routines, even while dealing with her injury. Angela is back, and she s capable of competing on all four events, said Meg Stephenson. She s working to get back into the all around, and we are very pleased with her progress, we re very proud of her committment. The Gophers add four freshmen to the squad this season, and the coaches couldn t be more pleased with their rookie class. Meg Stephenson is very complimentary of the dance abilities of the newcomers, noting that good dance ability really helps in choreographing floor and beam routines. Three of the four freshmen are training in all four events. We had to grow into the position we re in now, after having to piecemeal a lineup with event specialists for so long. Now we re attracting strong all around competitors, said Jim Stephenson. Jade Beattie is a gymnast who the coaches call an untapped talent. She is training on all four events, and the coaches are happy with her rapid improvement in technique and execution. Jade s vault and bar routines are excellent, said Jim Stephenson. Nouel Cason joined the Gophers this fall while still rehabilitating a back injury she suffered during her junior year of high school. We want to focus on resolving her injury, along with training gymnastics, said Jim Stephenson. Nouel is very capable on all four events, she s incredibly talented. Carmelina Carabajal joins seniors Laura Johnson and Kelly Stout as Albuquerque, N.M., natives on Minnesota s team. She is also training on all four events, and is strongest on vault and floor, matching the two open lineup spots left by Carolyn Yernberg s graduation. Carmelina comes in with abilities that rival Carolyn s, she is very good on all four events, and has really improved on beam, Jim Stephenson commented. Jackie Walkabout is training on the vault, beam, and floor. Jackie is a very nice addition to the team, said Meg Stephenson. She has untapped potential, and is a strong vaulter. Good team chemistry will also work to Minnesota s advantage in the upcoming season. The team chemistry is fantastic this season, explained Meg Stephenson. The team has never centered on one individual, and that made a huge impact last season. The whole team is good, and all the athletes are happy to have a strong team, they want to do everything they can to help their team be successful. Minnesota s coaches believe that with the personnel on the team, the state-of-the-art training facility in Piek Gym, and a coaching staff that truly loves gymnastics, the best is yet to come for the Golden Gopher women s gymnastics program. 5

C O A C H I N G S T A F F JIM & MEG STEPHENSON co-head coaches 14th season at Minnesota This season marks 24 years of partnership for co-head coaches Jim and Meg Stephenson. The Stephensons have combined both knowledge and experience to create a successful coaching team year after year. On a personal note, we feel fortunate to find a unique situation where we can continue to work together in something that we are both passionate about, said Meg Stephenson who specializes in choreography and dance, working with the balance beam and floor exercise. We get to do the things we want to do the most and on top of that we get to do it together. We ve been coaching for 24 years because it works so well, said Jim Stephenson who works with vault, tumbling and the uneven bars. We share the same philosophies and methodologies in teaching and goals. The Stephensons believe that the athletes on their team should continue to improve their gymnastics throughout their collegiate careers, and that the gymnasts should expect more than just maintaining their current skills. The co-head coaches take pride in running a teaching program, and the success of their gymnasts shows that the program works. The most recent example of skill improvement under the Stephensons leadership is 2005 Big Ten Gymnast of the Year Carolyn Yernberg. Yernberg joined the team as a walk-on in 2002, and went on to become the first gymnast in Minnesota history to score a 10.0, and became a Big Ten Champion in the floor exercise. The coaching strengths of the Stephensons were evident in their athlete s performances in 2002 when Minnesota achieved its highest national finish (9th) in the history of the program. Minnesota s tandem received 2002 Big Ten Coach of the Year honors, their second (1998), as well as Regional Coach of the Year honors. The duo has led the Golden Gophers to NCAA regional competition the past 10 seasons, capturing top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships twice. They have an record in their eight years as co-head coaches at Minnesota. He has a record in his 13 years as head coach at Minnesota. In addition to the two Big Ten Coach of the Year honors he shared with Meg Stephenson, Jim was also honored as the league s coach of the year in 1997 and After reaching the NCAA Championships in Gainesville, Fla., in 1997 and coaching the Golden Gophers to a 10th-place finish, Stephenson said he has reached one of the goals he set out to accomplish at Minnesota. After beating that performance with the 9thplace national finish in 2002, he now looks to guide the team to a return trip to the NCAA Championships in The Stephensons have worked to increase meet attendance at the Sports Pavilion and to uphold and better the University of Minnesota s gymnastics reputation locally and nationally. Jim Stephenson knows all about coaching a team to national success. Before coming to Minnesota, Stephenson spent four years at the University of Utah as the first assistant coach. He helped coach the women s program to national titles in 1990 and Before going to Utah, Stephenson was an assistant men s coach at the University of New Mexico. There he coached NCAA vault champion Chad Fox and NCAA rings champion Paul O Neill. From , Jim and Meg Stephenson owned and coached at the Pantheon School of Gymnastics in Rancho Cordova, Calif., where they produced 98 individual state champions, two national Junior Olympic champions and seven state team champions. Outside of coaching, Stephenson has an accomplished history on the collegiate competitive level as well. Stephenson was a member of Iowa State s NCAA championship teams in 1971 and 1973, and earned All-America honors in Prior to college, he won Southern California High School all-around titles in 1967 and Stephenson competed internationally in the 1974 World University Games in Moscow and represented the United States in the 1974 South African World Cup. In addition to his outstanding coaching success, Stephenson is an accomplished artist and has worked as a technical illustrator for numerous U.S. Sports Federations, along with sculpting various bronze pieces for both public sights and private collections.

Born in Ann Arbor, Mich., and moving to San Diego at age 10, Stephenson graduated from Iowa State in 1973 with a bachelor s degree in physical education. Meg Stephenson is in her 14th year coaching the Golden Gopher women s gymnastics team and her ninth as co-head coach. Before becoming a co-head coach, Meg Stephenson had been an assistant in the program for five years. Meg primarily works with the balance beam and floor exercise teams. She is responsible for the choreagraphy of the team s beam and floor routines, as well as arranging the musing for floor exercise. She has helped guide two Gophers to Big Ten balance beam titles (Mindy Knaeble in 1997 and Cathy Keyser in 1998), and one gymnast to a Big Ten title in the floor exercise (Carolyn Yernberg in 2005). In 2002, she guided two athletes (MaryAnne Kelley and Annie Laatsch) to All-America performances on the floor exercise. Outside of Golden Gopher gymnastics, Meg has been very active in the gymnastics community, on a local and national scale. She served as the president of the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches for Women from After completing her third year in the position, she declined to run again in order to focus more completely on coaching and return to school, but continues to serve on the executive board. Meg is a member of the USAG Board of Directors. She has served as the chair of the Big Ten women s gymnastics coaches, and is also a member of the NCAA Gymnastics Championships Committee. Prior to coming to Minnesota, Meg was a consultant for four years at the University of Utah, where she assisted in both balance beam and floor exercise. She was named the Colgate High School Woman Athlete of the Year in 1977 and the AMF Illinois Outstanding Senior Gymnast. Stephenson earned a bachelor s degree in elementary education in 1981 from Iowa State and received her master s degree in human resource development at the University of Minnesota in The Stephensons live in Plymouth, Minn., with 18-year-old son, Jack, and 15-year-old daughter, Sierra. C O A C H I N G S T A F F QUOTING THE STEPHENSONS The Stephensons on working as co-head coaches: This situation allows us to focus more intensely on separate, specific aspects of the program. By capitalizing on our individual strengths, we can pay greater attention to detail and create a broader influence. The Stephensons on the Golden Gophers training philosophy: Training in an environment where staying safe, having fun and improving are the prioritized objectives. The University of Minnesota women s gymnastics team works to continually increase difficulty value without sacrificing form, execution or consistency. We hold a philosophy closely aligned to the concepts of classic, artistic gymnastics and pride ourselves on substantial improvement through positive coaching. The Stephensons on the future of Golden Gopher gymnastics: Our continually improving national ranking has made us more visible to the top talent. Our recruitment from that pool is evidence that Minnesota has become a big-league player in collegiate women s gymnastics. We are at a world-class university that is not only on the cutting edge of intercollegiate athletics, but whose financial support and long-range commitment is equalled by few other institutions. This program is a complete package, possessing all of the key ingredients needed for continued success. 7

The Pavilion is the site of the annual Best of Minnesota meet, and was the home of the 2004 Big Ten Women s Gymnastics Championships. The Sports Pavilion has been home to the women s gymnastics team for the last 11 years and in that short span of time, The Pav is well on its way to becoming one of the best places in the country to see great collegiate gymnastics. An average of 1,717 fans attended each Golden Gopher gymnastics meet during the 2005 season. The Golden Gophers finished the season ranked 14th in the nation in average attendance. The Sports Pavilion at the University of Minnesota is a testament to the commitment of this University to its women s athletics teams, co-head coach Meg Stephenson said. We are fortunate to have this state-of-the-art arena. A gymnastics meet at the Sports Pavilion is more than just a gymnastics outing, it s an event for the entire family. In addition to great competition between many of the top teams in the nation, an evening with the Golden Gophers also includes other festivites. Minnesota s mascot Goldy Gopher, a fan favorite, is always on hand to direct the fun. Between rotations, audience members can participate in promotional games and contests. The building previously housed the ice hockey arena and was remodeled and reopened in Before moving into the Pavilion, the gymnastics team called Williams Arena home. In addition to the arena, the Sports Pavilion encompasses several other comforts of home. Seven-foot, white oak lockers grace the gymnastics locker room. Each gymnast s personal locker is individually lighted with its own shelving and power outlets. Directly off the locker room is a spacious team room. The team room contains an auditorium-like meeting area and a video-viewing facility, as well as luxurious team lounge and study areas. The Club Room overlooks the Sports Pavilion arena and is truly a special place for post-meet receptions or booster club outings. The Sports Pavilion also houses a media meeting room with easy access to the competition floor. Visiting locker rooms, an equipment room, athletic training facilities and a weight room are located in the lower level of the Sports Pavilion. The Sports Pavilion is also home to the Golden Gophers men s gymnastics, wrestling and volleyball teams. 31

Robert H. Bruininks was appointed the 15th president of the University of Minnesota on Nov. 8, He has served the University for 38 years, previously as professor, dean, and executive vice president and provost. Positioning for the future Bruininks is managing a major strategic positioning effort aimed at making the University one of the top three public research universities in the world within a decade. In many ways, we are already a leading research university, but the rapidly changing world of higher education requires that we not rest on our laurels and instead anticipate future needs and opportunities for education and research, Bruininks said. If we do not become more intentional about priorities and directions, our ability to serve our students and Minnesota will suffer. Bruininks vision for the University includes continued improvements to the student experience, building on recent successes such as special programming for first-year students, new and newly renovated residence halls and classrooms, improved academic counseling, and streamlined registration and financial aid processes. These innovations have helped fuel increased student satisfaction rates, increased numbers of applicants for admissions and enrollment, and significantly improved graduation rates. With more than 50,000 students enrolled in , the University of Minnesota Twin Cities is the second largest campus in the nation. To maintain that level of access for students there and at the University s three coordinate campuses, Bruininks has made funding for scholarships his No. 1 private fundraising priority. That includes a major new scholarship program for low income students called the Founders Opportunity Scholarship. Students at the University have unparalleled opportunities from which to choose among, from laboratories on the cutting edge of science to study abroad experiences to the chance to serve their communities through service learning. I want to be sure they re able to choose the University of Minnesota, he said. About President Bruininks Initially joining the University s faculty as an assistant professor of educational psychology, Bruininks s career has centered on accountability, policy research and development, and strategic improvement in the fields of prekindergarten to grade 12 and higher education. As a researcher, he has authored or coauthored nearly 90 journal articles and more than 70 book chapters, as well as training materials and several nationally standardized tests. Throughout his tenure at the University, he has founded and co-founded centers including the National Center on Educational Outcomes, the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Community Living, and the Institute on Community Integration. Bruininks has been honored with numerous awards, including a Kellogg Foundation National Leadership Fellowship. He is president emeritus of the American Association on Mental Retardation, serves on the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, and is a member of the Board of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges. Bruininks and his wife, Dr. Susan Hagstrum, have three grown sons, two of whom played sports at the Division I level, one grandson and another on the way in late July. Athletics Administration Senior Associate Athletics Director (Sport Administrator) Regina Sullivan Senior Associate Athletics Director (Finance & Administration) Liz Eull Associate Athletics Director (Development) Mike Halloran Associate Athletics Director (Championships & Sports Administration) Marc Ryan Associate Athletics Director (Facilities & Sports Administration) Scott Ellison Associate Athletics Director (External Relations) Gregg Shimanski Director of Athletic Compliance Frank Kara Director of Academic Counseling & Student Services Mark Nelson Director of Administrative Projects Sue Graupmann Faculty Athletic Representatives Richard Weinberg, Linda Brady In just three years as Director of Athletics at the University of Minnesota, Joel Maturi has develop the Golden Gopher athletic department into one of the elite programs in the country while maintaining a vision for a bright future. This past year, Maturi was instrumental in getting Gopher football one step closer to returning to campus when Twin Cities Federal (TCF) agreed to a $35 million corporate sponsorship, the largest corporate sponsorship of its kind involving college football. Gopher athletics is a window to our great university and we are fortunate that TCF realized the importance of what we are trying to accomplish, Maturi said. Bringing football Saturday s back to campus will not only reward our football program, but the students, alumni, fans and anyone else associated with the event. Maturi has led a department that has produced 412 Big Ten All-Academic selections the past two years, the highest two-year total in the history of athletics at Minnesota. Over 50 percent of Gopher student-athletes maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Since Maturi s arrival, more than 20 Gopher student-athletes have earned Academic All-America honors. During the academic year, the Gophers climbed to sixth-place in the NACDA Director s Cup standings following the winter sports season, the highest ranking ever for Minnesota in the competition. The Director s Cup recognizes overall athletic excellence by awarding points for NCAA competition in 10 men s and 10 women s sports. Eight Gopher teams advanced to NCAA post-season competition; with six teams ending the year with top 20 national finishes. Among the highlights from the past year was the football program s accomplishment of earning its third consecutive bowl win for the first time in school history with a victory over Alabama in the Music City Bowl. The Gopher women s hockey team won its second consecutive NCAA championship by defeating Harvard, 4-3, while the men s hockey team reached its third NCAA Frozen Four in the past four seasons. The Gopher women s volleyball team advanced to its second consecutive Final Four and reached the national championship game for the first time in school history. After a six-year absence from the NCAA Tournament, the men s basketball team returned to the NCAA tournament, while the women s basketball team reached its third consecutive Sweet 16. Two other Gopher teams finished the season in the top 20 with men s swimming & diving earning an 11th-place finish and men s cross country had an 18th-place showing at the NCAA Championships. Everyone associated with Golden Gopher athletics should be proud of our accomplishments this past year, Maturi said. The student-athletes, coaches, campus community and people of Minnesota all had a hand in our success. It is a credit to the quality student-athletes we have at Minnesota when you are able to combine academic accomplishments with athletic success. Maturi increased his leadership role within the Big Ten and NCAA during the past couple of years by being named to several prominent committees, most notably the NCAA Division I Management Council. He will serve as the Management Council s liaison to the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Maturi is also a member of the NCAA Division I Men s Ice Hockey Committee. Maturi was named the Director of Athletics at the U of M on July 12, The University s Board of Regents unanimously voted to name him the first Athletics Director of a combined athletics department. Maturi, a native of Chisholm, Minn., came to the U of M from Miami University (Ohio). He was the Director of Athletics at Miami since At Miami, Maturi was responsible for the management and leadership of 19 sports programs; all support staffs and nearly 600 student-athletes. His first season at Miami was an extremely successful one. The synchronized skating team won a national championship, the men s basketball team reached the NCAA Sweet 16, the volleyball team earned its first NCAA Tournament win, the men s cross country team advanced to the NCAA meet and the football team won 10 games against an impressive schedule. That year, six teams won Mid-American Conference titles while five coaches garnered Coach of the Year honors. The men s program captured the school s 20th Reese Trophy, an award that measures overall success of men s teams in the MAC. During his tenure at Miami, Maturi spearheaded fund-raising efforts for two important and necessary projects. In his final year, the Walter L. Gross Jr. Family Student-Athlete Development Center was opened and a new baseball field, McKie Field at Hayden Park, was dedicated. Prior to Miami, Maturi served as the Director of Athletics at the University of Denver from At Denver, Maturi led the school s move from Division II to Division I and oversaw the search for Division I conference affiliation. Maturi also assisted in the planning and the development of a $50 million Sports and Wellness Center and a $2.1 million tennis complex. Maturi is no stranger to the Big Ten. From , he worked at the University of Wisconsin. While there, he assisted in taking the financially challenged and struggling athletics program to profitability and unparalleled success. From , he was the Associate Director of Athletics with direct responsibility for all aspects of the football, ice hockey, wrestling, softball, men s and women s cross country, men s and women s rowing, men s and women s indoor and outdoor track and field, and the office of academic affairs. Maturi was named the Wisconsin Sports Person of the Year in Before entering the college ranks, Maturi spent 19 years as a high school coach and administrator at Madison Edgewood High School. He coached football, basketball, baseball and track and field, leading his teams to 10 state tournaments. Maturi was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Hall of Fame in Maturi received a B.A. in government from the University of Notre Dame in He also served on the support staff of Ara Parseghian s first national championship team. He earned a master s degree and certification for educational administration from the University of Wisconsin - Platteville in Maturi and his wife, Lois, have three children, Mark (29), Katie (28) and Anne (25).
