NORTH NEWS August 2, 2014 The students at Olathe North have been using their time off this summer to do some wonderful things. This issue is full of the great things North students and staff achieved this summer. Screaming Eagle Band Congratulations to the Olathe North High School Wind Ensemble for their invitation to perform at the prestigious Music for All National Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana from March 12-14, 2015! Music for All hosts several musical events each year on a regional and national scale that provide potentially life changing experiences. These include the Summer Music Symposium; Honor Band / Orchestra / Jazz Band of America; the Bands of America Regional and Grand National Marching Championships; and the Music for All National Festival. The MFA National Festival features approximately outstanding high school bands and orchestras from across the country. All of the ensembles selected to perform were required to submit a blind audition recording. A panel of several prominent band directors evaluated each audition and made their recommendations for bands to be selected for this performance. Simply earning an invitation to this event is a tremendous accomplishment and an outstanding testament to the musicality, effort, and dedication of our students! Additional information can be found at Website: 1

Girls Soccer The 2014 Lady Eagles varsity soccer squad received the Team Ethics Award of Merit from the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America). This was earned by receiving no Red card during our season of play, and less than ten total Yellow cards. Website: Student Travel Ms. Abby Shopper (Social Studies Teacher and Head Volleyball Coach) took students, Rebecca Alley, Madison Shepherd, Samantha Snook, Brittany Burford, and Sequoia Shire, to Portugal and Spain this summer. In Portugal they stopped at Lisbon, Albufeira, and Lagos; which meant that they spent a lot of time on the beach. In Spain they were in Seville. They saw the cathedral where Christopher Columbus is buried. Then it was on to Granada to visit the Alhambra. Finally ending the trip in Valencia and Barcelona. 2

Orchestra A picture of the Eaglettes and Cheerleaders This summer was the first "camp Mahan," an orchestra camp for students in grades Several students participate throughout the week of July 7th-11th for two hours each day. The goal of the camp was just to keep students playing throughout the summer, while having some fun. To close the camp a picnic was held with a performance to showcase the students accomplishments for the week. The group is looking forward to having this event every summer! Hopefully an additional camp will be added for in-coming freshmen. 5

Theater We had 16 theatre students attend "Thespian Festival," an international event sponsored by the ITS and EdTA (International Thespian Society and Educational Theatre Association) hosted by the University of Nebraska Lincoln. Juniors, Hannah Jones and Andrew Schaff, participate in college auditions receiving upwards of 35 callbacks to various schools across the country between the two of them. Austin Ebert and Kailyn Barnt auditioned for scholarships, one receiving options to a school in New York City. Fourteen north students participated in the Technical Theatre Challenge, improving their times and becoming more consistent in multiple events. The group saw fourteen shows performed by high schools from across the country, like "Mary Poppins" and "Catch Me If You Can". Students also attended workshops on many theatrical topics ranging from Puppetry to Lighting Design and Script Writing. The students represented North very well and have brought back new knowledge to the Olathe North Theatre Department. 7 Student Leadership Zan Johnson & Britten Massy attended the Hugh O Brian Youth (HOBY) leadership conference held in Wichita. Founded in 1958, the mission of HOBY is to inspire and develop a global community of youth who are dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation. Zan said, I learned the difference between a group of people and a team. A team has a common goal. I also learned that an effective team must be heterogeneous or made up of many different parts to be effective and that in a movement the first follower is just as important as a leader. Britten learned, that your strengths can become your weaknesses, and your weaknesses can become your strengths. There is good in the bad, and bad in the good. You always have to do what your heart pumps for. If you're not doing that, you're not going to be successful. Hannah Jones, Ana Gardi, Raela Petersons, and Harrison Biasella spent 6 days at the KSHSAA Student Council Summer Leadership workshop Emporia. This workshop provides students the opportunities to meet and exchange ideas with other student council members, learn about student council issues, and discover their own leadership potential which will help to build a better world in which to live. Hannah said, We need to stop comparing our crayons with those around us and just learn to color. I learned that in order to be a successful leader, you have to believe in what you're doing. You can't lead a group of people without passion. Kennedy Snyder (pictured at the left) attended the Missouri Associations of Student Councils Summer Leadership Camp, for a week in Fulton, MO. At the camp Kennedy engaged with students from Missouri during breakout sessions that included problem solving, project planning, self-esteem, meeting skills, and teambuilding. At camp she learned, that the best way to lead is to come alongside the person or group of people; lead do not manage. You have to learn to follow in order to be a leader. 7

Teacher Summer Professional Development AVID Jason Martin (Language Arts & AVID), Denise Debonis (Language Arts & AVID), Stacie Palmisano (Business/Computers & AVID) and Johnathan Lynk (Social Studies & AVID) attended the AVID Summer Institute on July in Indianapolis. At the conference, they rubbed shoulders with AVID teachers and administrators from all over the country. The focus was on ways to help our AVID program create a college and/or career ready student body at Olathe North. Boys Town Zach Johnson (Math), Chris Elniff (Science), Levi Huseman (Science), Sheila Irvin (Math), Melissa Fagan (International Language), Stephanie Alderman-Oler (Science), Pat Lieneke (Special Education), Richard Belske (Language Arts), Shayla Smith (P.E.), and Phil Shaw (FACS & Culinary) attended the Boys Town Well-Managed Schools Training. Richard Belske (Language Arts), Gwendolyn Jacobs (Language Arts), and Josh Price (Math) attended the Boys Town Administrative Training. All the trainings took place in Omaha. The Olathe North staff gained knowledge on school-based intervention strategies that emphasizes behavior management practices, relationship-building techniques, and social skills instruction. The goal at North is for all teachers to use the Boys Town strategies to build a true community in our school! 8
