This Turnkey Model Includes: One weekend (overnights optional) journey-based series outline for Daisies that focuses on aspects of the 5 Flowers, 4 Stories, 3 Cheers for Animals! Journey List of materials Tips for utilizing the series Discover + Connect + Take Action = Leadership The weekend series outlined below takes girls on a journey where they will practice Girl Scouting s three keys to leadership. Use the series outlined in this model along with the corresponding Adult Facilitator Guide and Girl Journey books. During the series, each girl will: Discover her values and views about the world. Connect with others to expand her networks and strengthen team-building skills. Take Action to begin to identify and solve problems in their community, inspires others to act and become empowered to make a difference in the world. Tips for this Series 1. This series will work best if each girl has her own book so she can explore the issues and develop her own interests. 2. The adult facilitator guide contains everything that leaders need to make the journey come alive for the girls, including helpful examples, tips, and suggestions to guide leaders. Leaders should familiarize themselves with the materials and feel free to customize activities as the girls make it clear where their interests lie. 3. To find experts to help inspire the girls and locations to host your session, leaders are encouraged to, work with the resources available in the community. It is suggested that an animal expert join the girls as a guest speaker on day two. 4. If there is an expert that could really inspire the girls but she is not available for an in-person meeting, leaders can, use technology to link her with the girls. A conference call, video chat, or instant message exchange can be used with the girls. She doesn t necessarily have to be in the room to help inspire the girls. 5. Leaders are encouraged to use the resources that are easily accessible in your local area. Consider asking the local community college, library, community center, or even the local high school for experts and resources. 4 P a g e

Friday Evening Total time: 75 minutes 5 Flowers, 4 Stories, 3 Cheers for Animals! Sample Schedule Materials: Adult Facilitator Guide Girl Books Opening Ceremony: Animals Around the World (Bald Eagle: United States): see appendix, Picture of Bald Eagle Girl Scout Promise and Law written on a large paper Team Animal Mural: Mural-size paper, Markers, crayons, glue and assorted craft materials, Large sheet of paper and marker (to jot down girls ideas) Snack Time: Ants on a Log- Cleaned cut Celery sticks (2-3 inches), cheese, hummus, or peanut butter, raisins, spoons (for spreading) All About Me Nests: Girl Book, Adult Facilitator Guide, Paper grocery bags (used are okay, 1 per girl) and assorted decorating materials for nests (fabric, cotton, wool, ribbon, sticks, tissue paper, leaves) Opening Ceremony: Animals Around the World (Bald Eagle: United States) (10 minutes): Once all the girls arrive, gather them in a circle, introduce yourself and explain that they are now in a Daisy Circle. Then let the girls know that they are about to begin an exciting Girl Scout Journey about caring for animals. Follow the prompt on page 29 of your Adult Facilitator Guide to follow through with the rest of the ceremony. Find some time between to establish rules and safety standards for meetings. Once the ceremony is finished have the girls, still in their circles, go over the Girl Scouts Promise and Law with them. (It will be helpful to have the promise and law written big and colorful on a board, so the girls who are first years, who have not fully begun to read, can have something to follow.) Team Animal Mural (20 minutes): Explain to Daisies that throughout this Journey they will be learning about animals, and as they go along they ll team up and place each animal on their Team Animal Mural. Explain to the girls what a mural is and guide them to write Our Animal Mural (or another title) across the mural. Then have the girls work together to create an eagle, on the mural, using the craft supplies. As they make their eagle remind them that eagle build the largest nests in North America. On this Journey we will be building our own nests that we will call our All about me Nests because they hold all the things you know and learn about caring for yourself. Ask the girls- What do you have now in your lives that is like a nest? (Your home, your room). Ask the girls if they have any ideas for how they would like to make or decorate their All About Me Nests, jot down their ideas. 5 P a g e

Snack Time/Story and discussion (20 minutes): Ants on a Log For directions and ingredients refer to page 31 in the Adult Facilitator Guide. This will be a good time to talk to the girls about food allergies. Story/Discussion: Read the introductory story to the girls (pages 5-13). Have them pay close attention to the sound the cat makes. Discussion: Using the questions on the bottom of page 38 in the adult facilitator guide, start a discussion about the cat in the introductory story. All About Me Nests (20 minutes): Have the girls look at pages in the girl journey book for what different nests look like. Using the materials you brought, let each girl create her own nest! Refer to page 41 in the adult facilitator guide for general instructions. Girls will continue to work on their nests at the end of the series. Closing: (5 minutes) Animal Friendship squeeze- Girls join hands to form a circle. Once they ve formed a circle, they should rearrange their holds so that their arms are crossed right over left. One girl starts the circle by making an animal sound, then squeezing the hand of the girl on her right. Each girl squeezes the next girl s hand in turn, until the squeeze gets back to the first girl. The girl who began the squeeze can say, 3 Cheers for Animals. Breakfast Saturday Morning 70 minutes Adult Facilitator Guide Girl Books Opening Ceremony: Animals Around the World (Lion: Iran): Adult Facilitator Guide, Girl Scout Law written on a large paper, picture of lion for each girl, Daisy Flower friend poster (see appendix), Team Mural (team mural supplies) Animals Safe and Sound (with Guest Speaker if possible): Facilitator book Act Like: no supplies needed Role Play: see appendix (What it Means) Opening Ceremony (10 minutes): Introduce the girls to the Daisy Flower friend s poster (in appendix). Discuss how each of the friends represents a part of the law. Then, pass out a picture of a lion to each of the girls; follow the script on page 37 in the adult facilitator guide and share that lions are a symbol of courage, just like Tula the Tulip. Read to them a couple fun facts about lions from the page bring out the mural and crayons and allow the girls to draw a picture of a lion. Animals Safe and Sound (with Guest Speaker if possible)(30 minutes): Express the fun sides to taking care of animals, but highlight that this can only be true if we know how to keep ourselves safe. If available, introduce the guest animal expert and inform them that she will tell them about her job. If not refer to page 39 in the adult facilitator guide. Tell the girls that since animals are not people and cannot talk, animals have to find other ways to let us know that they need something. Ask the girls, What are some ways you know your pet wants your attention? What 6 P a g e

do some of their noises or actions mean? Then use page 40 in the adult facilitator guide to lead a discussion of being safe around animals. Optional: Take a field trip to an animal hospital, vets office or pet store. Act Like... (15 minutes) Allow the girls to spread out in the room, and name some animals for them to act like. Some fun ideas are: elephant, bear, alligator, fish, rabbit, gorilla and frog. Then name some animals and have the girls guess how they eat by acting like that animal foraging or hunting! Some ideas are: squirrel searching for acorns, anteater slurping up ants, horses grazing on grass, lions chasing smaller animals and hummingbirds collecting nectar from flowers. Give the girls as many hints as they need so they may learn how animals eat! Role Play (15 minutes): see appendix for example or use the adult facilitator guide page 48. Lunch Saturday afternoon 85 minutes Adult Facilitator Guide Girl Books Opening Ceremony: Animals Around the World (Robin: Great Britain): Adult Facilitator Guide, Team Mural (team mural supplies) Snack- Edible Nests: pretzel sticks, shredded carrots, peanut butter or yogurt cheese (see page 75 girl book) Fly, Fly Away: streamers and music Spin-a-Tale: adult facilitator guide Team Birdbath: Paper mâché materials (see recipe, page 32 of adult facilitator guide): shallow bowl or other container, such as a pie tin, and can or clay saucer and pot; colored tissue paper and other decorative materials Opening Ceremony (10 minutes): Show them the picture on page 45 in the adult facilitator guide and follow the script on page 45 to point out some facts about Robins. Pass out the team mural and give the girls a few minutes to add the Robin to their mural. Snack/Story Time: Edible Nests (see page 75 girl book) (15 minutes): Have the girls create the nests and enjoy. Read First stories (pages 17-23). If time allows, use a couple of the discussion questions from the top of page 46 in the adult facilitator guide to have the girls reflect on how they are special and different. Fly, Fly Away- (10 minute) In The First Stories, Robin shares that soon it will be time for her to fly to Mexico for the winter. Invite the girls to spread their wings and fly like Robin. (This can be done indoors or out.) Have each girl choose three streamers for each wing Then show them how to clasp them together in each hand. Have them practice moving their arms up and down. Next, Show them how to make circles or other shapes with their wings. When they re ready, turn on the music and invite the girls to fly, fly away! by dancing, skipping, running, etc., to the 7 P a g e

rhythm as they hold their crepe-paper wings at shoulder height letting them move through the air. Change the music every minute or so to encourage the girls to move in time to the new beat. Invite another girl to lead the flock each time the music changes. Spin-a-Tale (20 minutes): Use page 46 in the adult facilitator guide to explain what Pourquoi are. The story of how Robin, the red robin, became red is a great example of a Pourquoi. Another example, How the Leopard Got Its Spots is below, which you may read to the girls. A long, long time ago, Leopard was the plain, solid brown-yellow color of the desert. He was so plain he was almost invisible against the brown-yellow desert. When he headed out to hunt, Giraffe and Zebra and the other animals didn't know which way to jump. To escape Leopard's appetite, Giraffe and Zebra headed into the great shadowy forest. When Leopard tried to follow them, he stood out like a bright-yellow sunflower against a dark fence. He could not hunt at all. Giraffe and Zebra saw yellow Leopard right away, and ran off deeper into the forest. Leopard had to do something. He asked his human friend to help him. So the Man carefully dipped his five fingertips in black ink and painted spots all over Leopard's fur. Now Leopard could blend into the shadows, and once again he became a great and powerful hunter! Now create a Pourquoi together as a group, one line at a time. Team Birdbath (30 minutes): The girls will create a Team Birdbath out of paper mâché; invite the girls to an area where you ve set up the materials. Let the Daisies know that the shallow bowl (or other object) you have set out will become the birdbath, but that first they are going to cover it with paper mâché and then decorate it. (Instead of paper mâché, you may also use found or recycled materials for the birdbath). For step-by-step instructions on decorating the birdbaths, see pages of the adult facilitator guide. Girls can also make a red robin from the leftover paper mâché material. Items must dry overnight. Participate in a discussion about ways people care for animals and write them on paper to put in the birdbath. Saturday Late Afternoon/Evening 60 minutes Adult Facilitator Guide Girl Books Opening Ceremony: Animals Around the World (Cheetah: Kenya): Adult Facilitator Guide, Team Mural (team mural supplies) Quesadillas: tortillas, cheese, optional vegetables. (see page 33 girl book) Fantastical Animal Flip Book: Adult facilitator guide, drawing paper, markers, animal pictures, hole punch, binder, scissors, glue, cardboard/construction paper Opening Ceremony (10 minutes): Show them the picture on page 51 in the adult facilitator guide and follow the script on page 51 to point out some facts about Cheetahs. Pass out the team mural and give the girls a few minutes to add the Cheetah to their mural. 8 P a g e

Snack/Story (15 minutes): Quesadillas (see page 33 girl book). Zinni s Story pages The Power of a postcard (15 minutes): Participate in a discussion about the post card that Gloria receives and what postcards they have received. Make a postcard with animal care tips to share with the group. Optional: Take a field trip to the post office and learn about how postcards travel from country to country Fantastical Animal Flip Book (20 Minutes): Let the girls know that they are going to team up to make a flip book of unique animals animals they make up. They re going to see firsthand how cool it is to be unique. Depending on how you ve decided to structure this activity, ask each girl to do one of the following: Choose an animal picture from the selection you provide and paste it on a sheet of cardboard or construction paper which will then be cut into three parts OR Draw an animal of their choice on the paper you provide. (If the girls are drawing their animals, make sure they all create their drawings in the same either horizontally or vertically and roughly the same size.) You might have the girls draw the head on the right side of the paper, the front legs in the middle, and the hind legs and tail on the left. Use a hole punch to punch one hole in each of the three body parts. Place the three parts in the animal binder. Now the girls are ready to flip the pages back and forth to create new and unique animals. Ask questions like: o Which flip book animal is your favorite? What name would you give it? o What could an animal with a rabbit s head, a giraffe s body and a duck s feet be good at? o Animals are different than each other. Why is it good for people to different from one another? o Have the girls share one thing about themselves that makes them feel unique. Dinner Breakfast Sunday morning minutes Adult Facilitator Guide Girl Books Opening Ceremony: Adult facilitator guide Animal Yoga: music and mats (if available) Snack- Apple Ladybugs: apple, yogurt cheese or peanut butter, or a topping of your choice, raisins, pretzels (see page 74 girl book) Animal Masks: see appendix, scissors, string, hole punch, glue, tape, markers, craft supplies. Optional Turtle Shell Activity: see appendix, makers, and crayons. Opening: (10 minutes): Read Dancing through Japan Animal Yoga (20 minutes): Check out pages in the girl book. If you ve brought music, put it on now to set the mood. Then introduce (and demonstrate!) each of the moves, reminding the girls to start each one with a deep breath in, and finish with a deep breath out. o The Butterfly- Sitting down, press the bottoms or soles of your feet together. Keep your back nice and straight. Now gently rock your knees up and down. 9 P a g e

o o The Turtle- Curl up on the floor. Tuck your knees under your tummy. Round your back as if you were a turtle in a shell. Slowly stretch one arm forward, and then slowly bring it back into your shell. Repeat with one arm at a time, then one leg at a time. Try to stretch your neck too. The Crane- Stand on both feet. Lift one leg, and touch your foot to the inside of your other leg, right above or below the knee. Balance. Now try the other side. If you can, bring both arms over your head. Press Palms together. When the girls have finished their mini-yoga session, ask them how they feel. Let them know that the poses are something other people might enjoy learning and that they can teach others to do them! Snack/Story (10 minutes) - Apple Ladybugs: (see page 74 girl book) Rumbles and Roars: read the story and discuss how elephants differ from us. Create masks (20 minutes): Girls can use the templates in the appendix or create their own masks to show the animals that they have learned about. Optional Turtle Shell Activity (10 minutes) (see appendix for directions and template) let the girls know that confidence can be like a shell (just like a turtle has!) that protects them and always keeps them strong and feeling great about themselves. Lunch Sunday Afternoon 70 minutes Adult Facilitator Guide Girl Books Team Mural (team mural supplies) All About Me Nests: Adult Facilitator Guide, the girl s nests and assorted decorating materials for nests (fabric, cotton, wool, ribbon, sticks, tissue paper, leaves) Next Steps: Red Robin Planner in Adult Facilitator Guide Team Mural (20 minutes): continue to add the new animals you have learned about to the team mural. All About Me Nests (20 minutes): Have the girls add to their All About Me Nests. Using the materials you brought, let each girl add to their own nests! Refer to page 41 in the adult facilitator guide for assistance. Next Steps (30 minutes): Girls will start to plan their Red Robin Project. Use the Red Robin Project planner in the Adult Facilitator Guide to start brainstorming ideas. This will need to continue at future meetings. 10 P a g e

1 STARTING OUR ANIMAL ADVENTURE Opening Ceremony: Animals Around the World (Bald Eagle: United States) Gather the girls in a circle and ask them to take turns introducing themselves and naming one thing they like about animals. Start them off by saying something like: My name is Ana. I like that my dog loves fetching a ball. Then let the girls know that they are about to begin an exciting Girl Scout journey about caring for animals. Say something like: A journey is an adventure where you see new places, meet new people, and have lots of fun. Our journey, led by beautiful flower friends, begins in the United States. Show the girls the picture of a bald eagle, above right, and explain that the eagle is the national bird of the United States of America. Depending where you and the Daisies are, you might explain that the United States is the country where they live, or where they may have lived at some point in their lives. Then ask if anyone knows the meaning of the word national. If they don t, offer a simple explanation. If you live in the United States, you might say: National means belonging to a country. The bald eagle is our national bird, just as the Stars and Stripes is our national flag. Then share this fun fact about the bald eagle: Bald eagles build the largest nests of any bird in North America. INTRODUCE THE JOURNEY S AWARDS The end of this Opening Ceremony is a good time to let the girls know that on this journey they will have a chance to earn three awards that show their special place as leaders in Girl Scouts. Explain that each award will be placed on a colorful garden patch, which they can wear on their Daisy tunic. Then give each girl her garden patch! From 3 Cheers for Animals! (Daisy), page 29 29

What It All Means for Girls WHAT IT ALL MEANS FOR GIRLS This is a good example of the Cooperative Learning process, as girls team up to develop and practice decision-making skills. Role-play activities are also great examples of Learning by Doing for girls, as they strengthen and practice their social skills with reallife sample scenarios. All activities in this leadership journey relate to Discovering, Connecting, and Taking Action the three Girl Scout keys to leadership! Plus, Girl Led, Cooperative Learning, and Learning By Doing processes make the activities fun and powerful for girls. Here, in a role-play activity from Session 3, you can see how these processes and the national Girl Scout outcomes the benefits we want for girls play out during a team gathering. The processes and outcomes are so seamless you might not notice them. Throughout the journey, processes and outcomes play out again and again. Before you know it, you ll be using these valuable aspects of Girl Scouting in whatever Daisies do! FROM SAMPLE SESSION 3 Role-Play: Choices, Choices Ask the girls to pair up for some role-play about making decisions. Then read them one of these scenarios (or another that you create based on the girls discussions, examples from the animal expert who visited, or other situations that have come up along the journey): Scenario 1 Abby and Ellie are playing catch in Ellie s backyard when they hear a sad little chirp, chirp sound coming from the woods. They follow the sound and discover a baby bird on the ground. They look up and see the chick has fallen from a nest in one of the trees. Poor little baby bird, cries Abby. Let s get it back in its nest with its mommy, she suggests. Maybe we should go in and tell my mom, says Ellie. I m not sure if we should touch it, even though it looks like it wants to get back to its nest right away. But the branch is so close, and the baby is so sad, says Abby. Take on the roles of Ellie and Abby and decide together what you will do: Lift the bird back into its nest or tell Ellie s mom. 22 From 3 Cheers for Animals! (Daisy), page 22

the dog and be late for the fair, or tell Mrs. Smith that you can t walk her dog. Each of these scenarios, in which girls work toward recognizing and considering that other people have thoughts and feelings that are different from their own, is aimed at Discover Outcome, Girls develop critical thinking skills. Scenario 2 Two friends, Pilar and Jessie, are walking to a fair in their town. They are very excited. I m going to go on the roller coaster! Pilar says. I can t wait to play the arcade games, says Jessie. Yoo hoo! calls 90-year-old Mrs. Smith from her window, as the girls pass by. Pilar and Jessie stop. Mrs. Smith tells the girls she is not feeling well today and asks, Will you please walk my dog right now? Take on the roles of Pilar and Jessie and decide together what you will do: Walk Though not project-focused, decision-making here is an excellent example of social problem-solving for Daisies, and striving toward the Take Action Outcome, Girls are resourceful problem-solvers. WHAT IT ALL MEANS FOR GIRLS After each pair of girls decides what they will do, have them present their solutions to the full group of Daisies as a short role-play. After the first scenario, you might point out that there may be other things that the girls might decide to do. For example, the girls can take the dog for a quick walk now, and a longer one after the fair. Ask if they think that might be a good thing to do. Then wrap up by guiding the Daisies to draw pictures and write captions under them to describe how their decision to help or not help made them feel, and put them in the Team Birdbath. You might use this template: Asking girls to identify how they feel after making a decision moves them toward the Connect Outcome, Girls develop healthy relationships, as does their decision, if they decided to help, in either scenario. I decided to and I feel about my decision. In this example, girls are learning to compromise by recognizing that what they say and do affects other people. They must consider and balance their and others needs if everyone is to be satisfied in the end. Recognizing that what they say and do has an effect on others moves toward the Discover Outcome, Girls develop positive values. Girls recognition that they can act on behalf of themselves and others targets the Take Action Outcome, Girls advocate for themselves and others. From 3 Cheers for Animals! (Daisy), page 23 23

SNEAK PEEK! The It s Your Story Tell It! journey series arrives in December 2010! Turtle Shell for Daisies A group activity for girls to express all that keeps them strong and feeling confident Goal: Girls understand the unique feelings, qualities, and actions that can strengthen their sense of self. MATERIALS Turtle shell activity sheets (next page) DECORATE YOUR STRONG SHELL! Let the girls know that confidence can be like a shell (just like a turtle has!) that protects them and always keeps them strong and feeling great about themselves. You might say something like, Just imagine that every time you wear this shell, it s easy to believe in yourself and your ability to do great things! Then say: Do you ever think, I just can t do it or Maybe I shouldn t even try? We all think these things sometimes, but with this shell protecting you will remember all the strength and all the skills you have inside you! Let s think about what keeps you feeling good and strong (things like your family, your friends, your pets, learning about yourself, trying new activities, knowing everyone is special in her own way). Now, with pictures or words, let s each of us put all of the things that make us feel good and strong on our shells. Once the girls have decorated their shells, ask them to talk about what they put on the shells. Ask: Do other girls have something on their shells that might keep you strong, too? Add it to your shell! You might say: Take this shell home and keep it in a special place. Whenever you look at it, remember all the strength and all the skills you have inside you. With these strengths and skills, you can always do great things! Colored pencils, markers, or crayons 3 CHEERS FOR ANIMALS! The storytelling theme of the new Daisy leadership journey offers a fun and friendly way for girls to understand themselves and their potential. 3 Cheers for Animals! invites girls to learn how much they can care for animals and for themselves. Enjoy this activity with girls, then take the whole journey together. Along the way, the girls can earn three awards! This activity has been adapted from the Dove Real Beauty Workshop for Girls and has been made possible by a generous grant from the Dove Self-Esteem Fund.
