1 Cheshire County Cricket League 2017 SEASON: NEWSLETTER NO. 21: SEPTEMBER 9 Rain helps CBH clinch second Premiership title ON a day of intermittent rain on Saturday, only one ECB Premier League match reached a conclusion. That was sufficient for Chester Boughton Hall, six wicket winners at Toft, to clinch their second title after a four-season lapse. In a reduced 80 overs game at Toft, Chester restricted the home side without the one-match suspended Rob Jones - to from the 40 overs available. James Scott, 35 top-scored while Will Owen took Chester replied with a confident from 25 overs led by Ric Moore 39 and Alex Money 35. How very well the club s new Saturday skipper has done in his first season. Take a bow Ross Dixon. Nantwich, now 26 points behind Chester with Didsbury at home to come, can take solace from the fact that they only escaped relegation to Division One on the final day 12 months ago. In the only other game started, at Grappenhall, the Dabbers posted a rapid declared from 32 overs thanks to fine knocks of 73 by Henry Dobson, 53 to Niall O Brien and 40 from Ryan Brown, while Aussie Aaran McCabe took Later, Grappers found themselves in deep trouble against Jimmy Warrington (3-13) at 31-3 from 11 overs when the rain chased the players off. At the foot of the table, neither Hyde nor Bowdon was able to start. Runners-up in 2016, Bowdon are already down while Hyde, who won the title as recently as 2015, will need to win at Chester, then hope that Cheadle and Grappenhall both draw blanks in order to retain senior status. Games unstarted were Cheadle v Bowdon; Didsbury v Bramhall, Neston v Timperley and Hyde v retiring champions Alderley Edge who cannot finish lower than third. Cheshire Cup final off again SUNDAY s re-arranged Cheshire Cup final between Neston and Chester was called off on Saturday evening so wet was the state of the ground. It has been re-arranged for the third time and becomes the final major fixture in the Cheshire cricket season, at Parkgate on Sunday, September 17 starting at 12 noon. It would be a real feather in Chester s cap if they were to complete a major Cheshire double. And huge plaudits would go to Neston on the other hand if they if they defy the form-book and wind up a decent season with a significant victory. O Also off on Sunday was the Joseph Holt 3rd XI Finals Day at Warrington which involved semi-finalists Nantwich, Neston, Didsbury and Stockport. This event will go ahead at Walton Lea next Sunday (12 noon).

2 SEPTEMBER 9 NEWSLETTER: p2 Title Day for Oulton Park as Marple line up second place A WEEK after ensuring promotion from Division One, Oulton Park recorded their 15 th victory more than any other club in the league to clinch the title. Skipper Pat Roberts was presented with the silverware by League chairman David Humpage at the tea interval of their game against Sale at Little Budworth, which they went on to win by nine wickets. In an 80 overs game, Sale posted at half-way thanks largely to their Lancashire 2nd XI batsman Brooke Guest, whose classy 103 lasted 114 balls and included 12 fours and a six. Matt Parkinson was the best home bowler with took Oulton responded with a comfortable from just 28 overs after a 124-run opening stand between Martin East, 70 and Danny Leech, 58 followed by 30 from Matt Jamieson. Marple moved into a commanding second place when they won by 42 runs at Upton in the only other fixture which got off the blocks. Reduced to 60 overs, the game saw Marple inserted to post at half-way, Andrew Hall contributing 55 and Dave Williams taking Upton were bowled out for 99, Chris McArthur 28. The damage was done by Andy Greasley, 4-27 and Jack Grundy, This win eases Marple 16 points clear of third-placed Macclesfield. And the rivals meet in the season s last game at Macc. Cancelled were Bollington v Davenham who can no longer finish in the top two Oxton v Urmston; Widnes v Macclesfield and relegated duo Weaverham v Warrington. Cheadle Hulme sre docked 60 points and lose league status CHEADLE Hulme, one of the league s best- known and most successful clubs with a glittering record of success which included six senior titles in the first eight seasons after being founder members in 1975, have had 60 Division Two points docked. This follows a probe which found that they had fielded two ineligible players n two successive games. They will now finish bottom of Division Two, which means relegation to the UK Fast Cheshire League in The Grove Park club fielded ineligible players in their victory over Barrow and winning draw against Tattenhall on August 26 and September 2 respectively. One of the players is reported to have been under suspension at the time by a club in the Greater Manchester League. Cheadle Hulme will thus go down into the UKFast League alongside Bredbury St. Mark s who were promoted only a year ago. Neither club was engaged on Saturday, their games at Romiley and at Christleton respectively both being rained off. Also cancelled were Brooklands v Northwich and Lindow v Alvanley. Key match was between promotion rivals Barrow and Stockport, the Cale Green side posting in the 30 overs available, George Barber 40, James Barber 37. Barrow got close at 157-5, Alex Reid 72, Mark Green Ending 13 7 points to the good, Stockport stay second 13 points behind leaders Barrow, with Romiley two points further back and even fourth-placed Alvanley still in with a chance. There was a rare tussle in the Tattenhall v Mobberley game at the Flacca where the visitors posted a modest 105 (Nick Butters 31, Stuart Sadler 3-17, Gary Forster 3-27). Tatters slumped to 53-9 before being bowled out for 99, last pair Forster and Alan Brock with a combined age of 104 almost doubling the score before being parted, a stand which greatly impressed umpire Chris Rigg. Matt Rose claimed 5-50 and Abdul Aqeel Final fixtures on Saturday see Barrow go to Northwich; Stockport host Tattenhall; new boys Romiley travel to Mobberley and Alvanley host Cheadle Hulme.

8 SEPTEMBER 9 NEWSLETTER: p8 GRAPPENHALL WIN FORTIES TROPHY FOR FIRST TIME GRAPPENHALL won the Over Forties Play-off final for the first time when they beat traditional rivals Toft by eight wickets before a large crowd at Chester Boughton Hall on Sunday. After beating Urmston Tigers and Bollington Veterans respectively in their semis a week earlier, then being denied a final due to rain, the clubs met in better conditions on Sunday, although bad weather lurked on the smartfone radars. White-clad Grappenhall were on top virtually throughout and restricted the greens of Toft to a below par 86-8 from their 20 overs. Only the experienced Nigel Muirhead with 22 not out and Toby Drummond, 21, got going against an attack spear-headed by Ben Cliss, 2-9, Ben Sagna, 2-17 and Mike Holden, In reply, well-supported Grappers were always ahead of the clock and were further lifted when Iain Wright clumped a superb six to become the only batsman to reach the retirement tally of 30. Richard Green was later well on his way to the same mark with an unbeaten 21 as he and former England star Neil Fairbrother, always such a wise presence, saw their side home at 87-2 with 7.1 overs unused. With 2-20 club chairman Muirhead was Toft s best bowler. Forties Competition secretary and League president Mike Talbot-Butler afterwards congratulated umpires Barrie Burns and David Gane for faultless performances, the host club for their superb playing conditions and catering and the two teams for setting such high standards on Wednesdays throughout the season. Iain Wright was named Champagne winner as Man of the Match and League chairman David Humpage presented this and the main trophy to Grappers skipper Steve Newell. SCORECARD TOFT GRAPPENHALL S. He is struck on the legs by the ball after a hit by the striker. The fielder removes the helmet and puts it on the ground. When the ball is returned from the outfield, it makes contact with the helmet and goes on to hit the wicket. A bail falls with the batsman, having crossed, just out of his ground. What decision should the umpires take? ANSWER: Contact by the helmet while being worn incurs no penalty. However, contact with the helmet while on the ground incurs a 5-run penalty and the ball becomes dead on impact. The batsman is therefore not out. The run taken would count, however as the batsmen had crossed. Laws 41.3; (b) (ii) QUESTION 20: A fair delivery which is going wide of the striker s wicket is deflected onto the wicket after it hits the boot of a fielder perched at silly mid-off. There is an appeal..what do you think should be the outcome?
