1 => VIVIO Cheshire County Cricket League Death of Sandy Scrimgeour, At pre-season Newsletter THE death occurred after a long illness on March 19 of former well-known League personality Sandy Scrimgeour, at the age of 73. Sandy served as League Fixture secretary from 1983 until he was taken seriously ill at the end of the 2009 season, when he entered hospital for specialised treatment from which he never emerged. He was appointed an Honorary Life Vice president in appreciation of his services in His wife, Elise, also played a prominent part in the development of the League, serving as Assistant secretary from when she and Sandy became involved together in the running of the Cheshire Cup in which they took particular pride. Sandy became closely connected to Cheshire County Cricket Club and served as 2nd XI, then senior team manager for a long period until Elise remains a dedicated worker for the county club as an active committee member. Both were rewarded with Life Memberships. Sandy was on the League umpires panel for 20 years until A funeral service was held at St. Thomas s Church, Heaton Chapel on Thursday, March 28 attended by many friends and associates from the cricket world and the textile industry in which Sandy worked. They were led by Elise, who wishes to thank everyone for their expressions of sympathy, her daughter Lynn, son Steven and four grandchildren. Donations are being accepted for the Devonshire Centre for Neurological Rehabilitation via Funeral Directors George Ball & Son, 39, Derby Range, Heaton Mersey, Stockport SK4 4AB, and should be made out to Stockport NHS FT. League chairman David Humpage pays the following tribute. I met Sandy many years ago when he made his debut for Mersey as a wicket-keeper in a Sunday game at Wythenshawe. Subsequently we played many times together as he metamorphed into a decent batsman, to bowler and back again according to needs.in short a good team man. We batted together on many occasions, usually with him blocking and me trying to get on with it or that s my story! We also teamed up as central defenders for a local Sunday football team when he became renowned as a ferocious tackler and fearless header of the ball. Sandy took up cricket administration when his playing days were over and did sterling work for League and County, making an invaluable contribution to the game. The redoubtable Scotsman will be missed by us all. MAVIS HOWARD. The death has also occurred of Mavis Howard, widow of umpire Eddie Howard after whom the League Fair Play Shield is named. Mavis was the mother of Alderley Edge secretary Kate Branagan. 11,135 debt arrears cleared ALL 36 full member clubs will receive supplies of 12 free cricket balls following their clearance of monies owed to the League. Retiring Treasurer Andy Woods reports that all full members who owed the League money at the end of last season have now cleared their arrears. Debts in September last year totalled 11,328 in fines and subscriptions owed by 68 full, associate and junior members, but that sum had been reduced to 193 by March 28, That figure is shared by 14 associate and junior members who will be asked to clear individual dues which range from to 116.

7 PRE-SEASON NEWSLETTER: 7 TWO CLUBS PREPARATION FOR 2013 SEASON Exciting days ahead at Marple NEWSLETTER offers warm thanks to Marple press officer Mark Brook for the following lively piece covering his club s prospects for the new season Despite the atrocious March weather, Marple players are gearing up for the new season with mounting optimism. The senior players have been attending winter nets on Sundays and Tuesdays since February and juniors have been in action for even longer. Anticipation is building with the team keen to consolidate on last season s excellent performances in the Premier League. Last September saw the 1 st XI in with an outside chance of the title and victory over local rivals Hyde in the final fixture would have seen them finish runners-up to Nantwich. A narrow two wicket defeat meant fifth place, but the with fewest defeats and the most rain-ruined games. Marple skipper Matthew Shelton is keen to continue the progress. Replacing the popular and successful Andy McGuinness as overseas player is Beau Webster, aged 19, currently with a rookie contract with Tasmania. Beau has represented Australia under 16s and was recently leading run scorer in the Aussie under 19s championships at Adelaide. It is hoped he can emulate the performances of McGuinness and Dominic Michael, the latter now a Queensland contracted player. With last season s productive opening partnership of James Crisall and Mark Bennett set to continue, Webster and former Cheshire skipper Andrew Hall should form a strong top four. Shelton wants some of the younger players to make strong claims for 1 st XI cricket and welcomes the arrival of the highly-promising Jake Warner, a 19 year-old Loughborough student from Hale Barns. Exit Steve Worrall Sadly, charismatic and brilliant wicket-keeper Steve Worrall has retired due to injury, but the spin bowling remains in the capable fingers of Cheshire veteran Andy Greasley and Joe Cash. With club coach and ex-england star Jimmy Ormond to support in the spin department in the second half of the season, there can hardly be another club with such riches. Paceman Andy Wylie was one of the great 2012 successes and he, along with skipper Shelton, will hope to be supported by several young quick bowlers improving with experience. With the 2 nd, 3rd and 4 th XIs retaining the same captains the new season promises to be one to remember further down the ranks.. All these sides have seen their younger players progress rapidly with the twos under Andy Wild, threes under James Hirst and fourths led by Andy Gichero all playing excellent and entertaining cricket. Marple s hard working junior coaches will also want to put the near wash out of last season behind them and enable all age group cricket to progress. Let us hope for the return of sun baked grounds, sunshine and large crowds regularly blessing Marple s excellent Bowden Lane venue. A warm welcome awaits new members, supporters and interested spectators who will be pleased to know that the bar, ably manned by Matthew Scruton, is open every week end during play. Our season opens on Saturday, April 20, with the 1st XI at home to attractive opposition in Neston. Let s hope for a good, dry start. and at Toft CHAIRMAN Nigel Muirhead reports on developments at Premiership club Toft. He writes: We have recruited former Cambridge MCCU and Lancashire Academy fast bowler Joe McKluskie from Lancashire League club Bacup. Left-arm spinner Jimmy Lomas is on a Combined Universities tour to Sri Lanka but will be back by April 20. Rob Jones has had a successful tour to South Africa with the England Development Program and along with 1 st XI captain Toby Drummond s son, James, is back at Lancashire Academy. We have pre-season friendlies against Southport & Birkdale and Harrogate, both away With support from Holt s Brewery, a new players seating area has been created by extending the current patio. It will be covered by a large jumbrella. Cricket Force weekend was a great success with more than 40 players and members attending. The pavilion carpet has been replaced throughout from further investments. We are planning to be open every Friday throughout the season from 5.30 p.m. to members and non members. Required work on the square has been completed in line with advice from the League. Lastly, we have sponsors for the Over 40s team Talk about a close season!
