Bowls SA DSC Issue Sept Cell CONVENOR HERMAN VAN RENSBURG hermanv@telkomsa.net FAX: Cell EDITOR ALOMA SMITH alomasmith@absamail.co.za FAX: DEBRA FERGUSON Vice-President: Bowls SA FOREWORD Development is the most important aspect of bowls at this point in time. It was heartening to see at the Bowls South Africa workshop the commitment of the District Executives to support the new phases of Development. Our Bowls South Africa team under Herman are working on the next phases of our Development drives aimed at the members of our communities under the age of 35. Club Presidents need to realise that they need to support Development or their clubs will cease to exist. Our average age of bowlers has increased due to the fact that very little has been done at club level to bring new members into the game. There is speculation as to why this is not happening but I think we need to look at ourselves and ask the questions. Are existing members scared of competition? Are our older administrators hanging onto their throne of power? If either of these answers is yes (which I am sure they both are) we are in trouble big big trouble. What happened to the days where competition on the green and administration was very healthy? We need to look to the future and change the attitude of all bowlers. A positive outlook is what is needed. I am appealing to every member to work on Development and the way you can do this is to introduce 1 (only one) new bowler to bowls every year. Our membership will double annually. This would help the profitability of our clubs and prevent them from closing. I am sure if we work together we can make a difference! Debra Ferguson, Vice-President, Bowls SA has a deep passion to promote the game of bowls to all, especially to the younger generation. She also serves on the World Bowls Development Committee and Bowls SA Development SC. Bowls development is part of the process of improving the standard of play and increasing the number of people playing bowls. It is about investing time and effort now for returns in the future whether short or long term.

Page----2 of 6 Vodacom Super Sport 1 TV Super Saturday Bowls Challenge On Saturday 25 August 2007 at 10:30 the panel of the TV programme Super Saturday accepted a bowls challenge from Highveld Stereo 94.7 FM at Morningside Country Club in support of the Disability Bowls SA. The players that took part are Jeremy Mansfield, Darren Whackhead Simpson, Paul Rotherham and Bongani from the radio station and Niel Andrews, Graham Joffe, Terry Payne and Ed Jordan of Supersport. Donny Picketh and Gerry Baker assisted Highveld Stereo, whilst Billy Radloff and Brian Dixon did their best for Supersport. Although each side won a game, the overall result went to Highveld Stereo. The game was filled with fun, laughter and dancing girls but there is no doubt that much pride was at stake. Of the non-bowlers, Whackhead stole the limelight with a surprising display of ability and real potential. Although some of the old traditionalists would probably not approve of the showmanship of the event, we should congratulate Morningside Country Club for an event that has done more to promote bowls that any other recent single event. At 12h30 there was a special competition Beat n Bok (players were able to challenge a Springbok). A matric bowling novice, Chad Mayhew of Sandringham High School, took on Lorna Trigwell and beat her with an awesome display of drawing. The CGBA Development Squad, together with a few of the under 25 Squad, played in a curtain raiser and later enjoyed the attention of the celebrities who posed with them for pictures and signed autographs. Apart from Highveld Sterio and Supersport, fundraising sponsors in support of Disability Bowls SA included Vodacom, Steiner Group, Perfect Delivery, Black & White Whisky, SAB and Nedbank. Die spel pas my uitstekend. DEVELOPMENT BOWLS GAINS MOMENTUM Since bowls was introduced to schools some five years ago as an extra curricular sport, there has been steady progress in producing some good young bowlers and it has gone through various stages/phases: - First Phase: School visits and introduction of the development programme to principals. Organised coaching sessions for learners. - Second Phase: Red cards issued to learners after a few lessons in order to build up a data base and continued coaching on a weekly basis. - Third Phase: More advanced coaching. Identify possible skips, thirds, etc, for selection to Inter-Districts U/19s Tournament. - Fourth Phase: Advanced learners to affiliate and to fall in with the districts under 25s programme. At club level these players must gradually be integrated into club activities and competitions. Districts to incorporate a development competitions/programme into their annual year calender. DEVELOPMENT BOWLS During the past two years, BowlsSASDC have accomplished much with regard to promoting the game of bowls to all, especially to corporates and the younger generation. The recent Inter-Districts Under 19s tournament was a reflection of this achievement, where 50% of the 26 teams were that of colour. It is now up to the Districts and particularly the clubs and their members to ensure that these players are welcomed, encouraged and nurtured they are after all the future of the game! We are creating future stars and role models that will attract other youngsters to bowls. What these youngsters need are more playing opportunities and positive coaches. To see the kids taking the opportunities that are given to them gives us a sense of fulfilment. SCHOOL BOWLS Schools should be encouraged to consider the possibility of introducing bowls as a competitive sport at their interschools day. Some schools in the WP have already taken this step and the learners love it! We are constantly hearing that Bowls SA is negotiating with the Education Department to introduce bowls as a formal extra curricular sport at schools and to introduce a bowls schools league. This action has now become of vital importance and it is time that schools are advised as soon as possible. Many children don t play any sport at school. Many don t like contact sports or are physically unsuited to most sport played at school or simply spend their time in streets or shopping malls getting up to mischief. Bowls is a means of giving them a healthy alternative. The main obstacle is to find volunteers at bowling clubs to run with this programme. It is very rewarding in the end!

Page----3 of 6 District Inventories Bowls, Mats and Materials The form regarding inventories was circulated to all the districts with the purpose to establish what equipment was distributed to all the districts and to help us with future allocations of equipment. If you have not yet returned your inventory kindly submit your district s inventory of stock received to Bowls SA asap to hermanv@telkomsa.net Under 19 Inter-District Tournament Hosted by SFS in Bloemfontein 9-13 July 2007 RESULTS GOLD (Cup) WP A-TEAM (OVERALL WINNERS) SILVER (Cup) NORTH WEST BRONZE (Cup) WP B-TEAM FOURTH (Cup) S. CAPE Skip: A Herselman THIRD PORT NATAL Skip: J Jacobus FOURTH EP (B) Skip: N Mapi Under 25s: Congratulations to Boland s Team who were the overall winners of the Under 25s tournament and won the Gold in the Cup championships. The young team of Stephan de Jager (age 17), Darius van Loggenberg (age 15), Ezile Fourie (age 14) and Schalk Mouton (age 16) did extremely well to beat the more experienced players. Well done! Runner-up for the Silver was Port Natal Inland Skipped by Bradley Robinson and Bronze was won by EP (A- Team) playing against Southern Free State. WP (A-Team won gold in the Plate, Northern Tvl won Silver and WP (B-Team) won Bronze. Under 19s: Congratulations once again to Lee-Andrew Arnolds of WP whose under 19 team won gold again this year playing against the strong team of North West who was runner-up to win Silver. It may have been freezing in Bloemfontein, but the standard of play was red-hot! The under 19 players, literally brushing the ice off their bowls at Schoeman Park after each delivery in the morning games, turned on a brave performance. It was heartwarming to see the high standard of play by these youngsters. It is now up to the Districts and particularly the clubs and their members to ensure these players are welcomed, encouraged and nurtured they are the future of the game. Well done to the SFS under the Chairmanship of Trevor Davis for a well organised event. Also a big thank you to Ron Cloete who assisted with all the development arrangements on behalf of Bowls SA Dev Committee. John Blake who was in charge of the hostel bookings at St Andrews School also needs to be applauded. We wish to express our sincere appreciation for the kitchen staff who served 5-star meals! We look forward to visiting Bloemfontein again next year. Inter-District Under 25s and 19s Tournament 2008 will be hosted by SFS in Bloemfontein from 7 to 11 July 2008 CRACK-A-JACK AT THE INTER-DISTRICTS U19 The U19 teams all did the Crack-A-Jack circuit in Bloemfontein. It was included in the programme at Schoeman Park BC. Each player had the opportunity of doing the circuit whilst being evaluated. Managers of Districts assisted. They thoroughly enjoyed doing it. Their enthusiasm was clearly displayed everytime a player got the Crack-A-Jack (full house score of 5 points). Prizes were allotted for best crack-a-jack achievers at the tournament. This activity is supported by BSADSC especially for evaluating a development player in a fun and motivational manner. Kallie Haupt, Bowls SA National Coach, also introduced a new Crack-a-Jack exercise. CRACK-A-JACK APPLICATIONS There is so much you can do with these activities. Here are a few ideas. 1. Set up a top ten CrackerJack list in the club 2. Run a CrackerJack ladder competition just as in tennis or squash 3. Get a Cracker-A-Jack team e.g. 3-4 players together and challenge other teams or even other clubs. 4. Run a CrackerJack Day (fun day) with teams of 2 or 3 per team competing. 5. Put in small amounts of money e.g. R5 per head in a pool winner takes all or whatever.

Page----4 of 6 Development Coaching: Swellendam BC continued with the coaching of development players even though it was off season. Coaching and training took place on mats in the school hall. A few new learners were motivated and started to play bowls. Border: It was noted that they have a U/25s programme in their district. Central Gauteng CGBA: Inter-Schools: We run two to four inter-schools tournaments each year. Participation varies from 36 to 48 children depending on the schools calendars. Under 25s: We also have a full programme for under 25 s each winter with games and coaching on Sundays culminating in the selection of a district side which competes against other districts. Our programme for over 25 s is for novices only. They meet once a month on Sundays and each year a CGBA Cubs side is selected to compete against other districts novices. Pensioners: Some clubs hold special weekday events for pensioners but no district programme exists other than the normal Senior events at district tournaments. Corporate Days. Several clubs do host corporate days but our districts involvement is just commencing as a result of BSA s Markex efforts. Eastern Province: Due to enthusiastic support from our EP Executive and our main sponsors Spec-Savers and our additional main U25 sponsors Coca-cola SABCO, our development programme is moving from strength to strength in EP. We have also gratefully accepted the services of a local sports media consultant who is keen to give bowls as much coverage as possible in our local print and broadcasting media. This has helped give our Youth Programme a lot of exposure and assisted us in our marketing endeavours. However, it is absolutely vital that Bowls gets onto the official schools sport list from the Dept of Education as SOON AS POSSIBLE. Bowls SA has been talking about this for 3 years and we have yet to see any results of this at district level. In order to get schools on board with their teachers, youth bowls will continue to be a marginalised sport with only the odd scholar here and there. U19 Inter-Districts: We entered 2 teams in the U19 Inter- Districts Tournament this year and are very proud of returning with the Bronze medals from the Plate event. I do think it would have been nice for the manager of the team, who puts so much effort into the players week after week, to also have received a medal or at least some acknowledgement. KZN Country: The KZNCB under 19 team was selected from the available players after trials were held at Ncandu and Dundee. The under twenty five team was skipped by Douglas Steele. They had an enjoyable tournament at Bloemfontein in July KZN wil graag vir Hans Steyn, afrigter van Thiboloha Skool in Qwa Qwa, gelukwens met die goeie resultate wat behaal is by die Dowe SA Rolbalkampioenskappe wat onlangs in Kimberley gehou was. Newcastle BC hosted 24 Newcastle High School first team rugby players and their two rugby coaches on Friday 1 June The bowls coach assisted by the U19 bowlers put the rugby players through their paces. This was a great success and it was apparent that everyone enjoyed the experience. Gauteng North: Vision: The Vision of the BGN Development Standing Committee is the marketing and promotion of the game of Bowls amongst the residents residing within the boundaries of our district, as well as the improvement of the bowling skills of existing bowlers to the bowler s personal capabilities. Mission of Bowls Development: The focus will be on primary, secondary and tertiary educational institutions, the disabled, and all other age groups. To achieve this mission, the Standing Committee will endeavor to utilize all the resources available, human as well as all other recourses to the Committee s disposal, in a professional and entertaining manner. All the activities of the Development Standing Committee will be conducted in the framework of a well planned, organized and controlled manner. A lot of work is still to be done. The first priority will be to negotiate with the Department Of Education to declare Bowls as a school sport. Limpopo: Come and bowl for Gold at LEKKERBREEKROLBALKLUB te NABOOMSPRUIT Sept A mixed pairs tournament specially for caravaners and campers and for those who love nature and enjoy the bush. elize@esnet.co.za or tel no or Inter-Distrikte O/19 Toernooi: Hartlike dank aan almal wat verantwoordelik was vir die Inter-Distrikte O/19 Toernooi te Bloemfontein. Mpumalanga Lowveld Region:

Page----5 of 6 Lowveld Nomads - Leslie May: Whenever we hear of someone who has just joined bowls, we make a point of inviting them to our outings, as we feel that this is a good time for them, as new bowlers, to play against people from other clubs in a fun day with no pressure on them to perform to any standard as bowlers. At one outing we had seven nonbowlers and by all accounts they really enjoyed the outing. One even won a session prize to his great excitement. Two of the seven have indicated that they will be joining bowls shortly. We feel that Nomad bowls is an ideal development ground for bowlers and intend to continue with our efforts in trying to attract new people to the sport. Mpumalanga Central Region: Very encouraging to hear that Gussie s district is busy with development as they recently did a short mat display at Sasolburg in the Highveld Zone. They also sent two teams to U/25's but as yet have no Dev. players they will be looking into this matter for next year. North West Ina Meyer: North West U/19 started out with the BSA drive in September Tired and Hungry: The scholars walk the plus minus 10 km to the Potchefstroom Country Club every Friday, arriving, tired and hungry. We therefore realised that we need to give them something to eat. Transport Problems: In order to prepare scholars to play in a Tournament one need to have the full team for at least 2 hours good practice, per week. Sponsorship was attained from the Mayor of Potchefstroom to pay for Taxi fares so all can be at the club in time for practice. The 2006 results speak for themselves; NW won Silver overall and Gold in the Plate event in Klerksdorp. Funds: The players decided to embark on creative ways to get money for next year. This will develop not only their bowling skills but also their organisational and entrepreneurial skills for one they started selling peanuts to raise funds for next year. The team that went to Bloemfontein was motivated by the skip the skip of last year s plate winners and the lead of the Silver medallists, they wanted to at least equal or improve on last year. They did equal Win Silver again. Sport Leaders: NW scholar bowlers are now ready to be trained as Sport Leaders and we are going to embark on this journey. The existing bowlers are going to be divided into teams that will be responsible for different school teams. This will include: recruiting, coaching, organising and managing their own teams to get a school s league going in March 2008 Special thank you to all the MANAGERS, COACHES, and hard working BOWLERS out there that get and keep U/19 and U/25 bowls going. We need more bowlers like you. Southern Free State / Suid-Vrystaat: Hosted the Under 25 and Under 19 Tournaments in July Two of the Schools League players Gordon Free and Velile Themba were included in the U25 team with the help of Sponsors who paid their affiliation fees. A new club Hillandale Bowling Club had their official opening on the 9 th August. They have already established a Development programme even before the Club s official opening. Sedibeng Manda vd Heever: U19s I/Districts The tournament as such was an excellent learning experience for the participants. I would recommend that fewer ends be played on a day and that some light evening entertainment for the children would be of value. Many thanks to Bowls South Africa for the guidance and assistance with the tournament, as well as the financial support received. Western Province: Many thanks to Mike Marsden Vice-President and Alan Roberts President of the WPBA who supported bowls during their term of office on the WPBA Executive. Mike has been the keypin in the whole development programme in the WP during the past few years and has made major contributions. Words cannot express our gratitude towards Mike for what he has done for development, eg financially, support and his perseverance to promote bowls to the general public irrespective of age, colour and creed. I quote Mike: The future of this sport rests with all of us. It is incumbent upon every bowler to approach development with a passion and an open mind. Together we face the challenge to promote the sport of bowls. Every club and bowler must be made aware of the challenges which are faced. What must we do to see our sport grow? We must ensure that Bowls will not continue on a path of self-destruction!
