JUNIOR CO-ORDINATORS REPORT Looking back on this season, I am again really proud to be apart of the Monbulk Cricket Club. We live in a great community and our cricket club is a true reflection of this. There are many people to thank and much to look forward to in the coming years. Although we did not have an U17 team (we will next season), cricket is in a very healthy state at Monbulk. We fielded five junior teams and again a very large Milo in2cricket program (over 100 kids). Highlights of the season for me included: The U15 s finishing top of the ladder after a terrific season, unfortunately just losing the semi-final against UFTG on the 2 nd last ball in a ripper game. Seeing many of our U15 s play in the seniors on Saturday afternoons and train with the seniors. Also the way our seniors looked after our juniors in a caring and positive way. I look forward to many of our juniors playing in the seniors in the years to come. The U13 s making a grand final after merging with Knoxfield after Rd 1. The continued improvement of the U12 s, as well as being a great group of kids. Seeing 19 very keen kids playing in two teams in the newly formed U10 Big Bash comp, nearly all of which came from our Milo program. Rab Noonan representing Monbulk in the U12 FTGDCA comp team. The amount of kids playing cricket in our nets all summer. I reckon we have some of the most well used nets in Victoria. I even saw Aussie Richardson having hit with dad David in near darkness one morning before the U13 semi final. With a few of our experienced dads and coaches moving on at the end of last season, I needed to find some new junior coaches for this season. I targeted four blokes who I knew would do a great job, and thankfully they all said yes. To Brian Martin (U15 s), Chris Defina (U15 s), Tom Watson (U13 s) and Duncan Maher (U10 s), I cannot thank you guys enough for your time and effort with our juniors this season. None of these guys have kids playing in our juniors, they all play in the Monbulk seniors and have busy lives themselves. This says lot about the quality of people they are, that they would give up their time to coach our juniors, in which they all did a brilliant job and I know that both the kids and parents really appreciated their efforts. I certainly hope that they continue in some way shape or form to be involved with the juniors. We also need some new coaches for our expected two new U10 teams next season. Obviously there are many other people to thank, none more than our three Team Managers for their amazing organization and support. Well done and thank you to Carolyn Gillard (U15 s), Bronwyn Badgery (U13 s), and Kerrin Turney (U12 s). I d particularly like to thank Bronwyn for her assistance to me at the start of the season when I was on long service leave as well as her help with the Raffle and her role as assistant treasurer for the club. Many thanks to all the other parents for supporting our junior teams in roles such as umpiring, scoring, assisting at trainings, entering My Cricket results, transporting kids, cheering, cooking BBQ s, selling raffle tickets, taking photos etc etc. These people include Cliff Cleary, Kim Steer, David Richardson, Emily Thompson, Steve Bohun and many more. I would also like to again thank Steve Bohun for his tremendous work as co-ordinator of the successful Milo program, which is still the envy of many other clubs. I know how much work this involves and is vital for the continued success of our junior and senior cricket teams. Steve went over and above what is required by also doing many many primary school cricket clinics. Congratulations to all the kids that played for the Monbulk Junior Cricket Club this season. Thanks for your efforts and the way you all play the game. Have a great winter (Go Pies) and I look forward to seeing you all at the MCC next season and for years to come Steve Utting

Monbulk U / 2014 Coach s Report This year Chris Defina and Brian Martin took on coaching the U15's team. The U15's team was filled with some new players but was made up mostly of the same group which had played together now for the last few years. The group is formed with a range of abilities on the cricket field and through the boys positive attitudes, ability to listen and take on board advice, they were able to get the most out of each other this year. In the end the boys were able to finish top of the ladder and went into finals with a strong mindset. The fundamentals were drilled into the team all year and the team was always ready to listen and of course have a laugh while doing so. Plenty of cans of soft drink were won and lost throughout trainings and every player had a win on the field both personally and from a team perspective throughout the season. From the worst hair cuts we have ever seen, to the worst cricket shots we have ever seen, there was always something driving the boys to improvement in their games, looks and tactics on the field. Some notable moments and results this year include two last over wins in close matches to the boys and winning a game outright when we made nearly 300 runs and bowled a team out twice for a combined total of just over 50 runs. Some individual moments and results include Aaron Gillard scoring 306 runs at an average of 61.2, James Fenby taking 5 wickets in a match, Hamish Emmett retiring on an unbeaten 53, John Badgery hitting 20 runs off one over including two 6's, Scotty Bennett hitting two 4's, Adrian getting his best figures of 3/11, Travis Wills getting 4/1, Daniel bowling fast and scaring the pooh out of the opposition, Kelsey taking catches behind the stumps and hitting a boundary over the bowlers head, Kenny bowling boys off full tosses, Flynn taking 2/8 one game. Overall every boy in the team had a good result in the season and have become good cricketers. Early in the season, we are allergic to walking in with the bowler and attacking the ball, we have improved this significantly throughout the year. It has also been interesting to see our boys stop playing cricket and play silent ball, especially when we have fielded first at the 8:20am start time. At times we were as quiet as a library, well done on the improvement here as well boys, it s so important to stay in the game with our voices as cricketers. The best thing about this year though has been how the boys have worked as a group in their ability to listen and then produce. All the boys have enjoyed their cricket and we hope to see them again next year. We would also like to thank all the parents this year who have helped out and who have always given good conversation at games and training. In particular we would like to thank Carolyn for her work every weekend in organising the team and scoring each week. Thanks, Funky and Marto Above: U15 Coaches Funky talking to the boys in the rooms and Marto hitting catches.

U13 Hawks / Knights 2013 / 2014 Coach s Report Season 2013/14 started off with many doubts, the most of which revolved around how many players our team would have! After round one it was decided we would merge with Knoxfield to become the Knights/Hawks and for most of the season we had 13 players each Friday. The boys quickly got to know each other and were able to pull together to play some good cricket throughout the season, culminating in a grand final appearance. Even though this game didn t go the way we had planned, it was a testament to the boys that they earned the right to be there in the first place. We were able to end the season with 8 wins and 3 loses (including finals) and topped the league with runs scored by any team. This was by far the most pleasing aspect of the season as all of the boys were able to make runs at one point or another and we had 18 retirements throughout the season. By combining with one another and building partnerships, we were able to put pressure on the bowlers and build momentum against the opposition. At the bowling crease we were often guilty of bowling too many wides and no balls, giving the opposition runs and more balls to score off. On a positive note, we still took the 3 rd most wickets of any under 13 s team and the boys needed no motivation to stay focussed on the field. After being 1 win, 2 losses and a draw after the first 4 games, the boys went on to win 6 of the next 7 games, including gaining some revenge over Rowville in a high scoring semi-final. With Tam Noonan (19), Michael Hill (30*), Daniel Rak (15) and Tom Badgery (28) all making runs and Caleb Fletcher and Tom Trezise in the wickets, it was a great victory for the team. Other highlights for the season include Caleb s 2/8 off 4 overs vs The Basin, Thomas B s flighty leg spin, the development of Thomas T s wicket-taking bowling and Daniel Rak s pace with the ball and powerful hitting. It was certainly amazing to see every single player improve both their batting and bowling skills with a little application and there is certainly some future Monbulk stars if they continue to work hard. The award winners for the season are as follows: Batting Award (aggregate): Tam Noonan with Tam had a great year with both the bat and ball, not losing his wicket until the semi final. He lead the Monbulk boys for runs, and steadily picked up pace in his bowling, taking 7 wickets for the season. His season s results are clear rewards for hard work practicing in the nets. Bowling Award (most wickets): Michael Hill with Michael finished the regular season with the most wickets and often led the side by example with his bowling. He also finished with 150 runs and steadily improved his batting as the season went on. Michael was also comfortable in a leadership role and has the ability to set examples for others to follow. Coaches award - Austin Richardson: 110 runs and 6 catches Aussie was the team s wicket keeper / opening batsmen who grew into the roles as the weeks went by. His patient temperament combined with intelligent batting meant he was a rock at the top of the order. His wicket keeping developed over the season and showed the footwork of a keeper that will have success in the future. Lastly but certainly not least, the success of the cricket team is wholly dependent on the assistance of volunteers to score, manage and transport the boys each week. I would to thank all the parents who were able to organise their kids each Friday afternoon to get them to the ground on time. A special thanks goes to Bronwyn Badgery who managed the team, provided transport and never missed a training. Also thanks to Kim who was the team scorer each week and did an excellent job. In finishing, well done boys on an excellent season, hopefully we can not only go one step further next season, but also have as much fun as we did this season. Tom Watson

Monbulk U / 2014 Coach s Report As I said in my co-ordinators report, the best thing about the U12 s is that they are such a great group of kids who are really good mates. I enjoyed training and coaching the boys on a Monday night (also with Tom and the U13 s) and looked forward to our matches every Friday night. Our home games were at Silvan this year, due to Milo and U10 s dominating the main ground. This proved to very successful, as it is a great junior ground for both players and spectators. This season was the first for this group of kids playing competitive cricket with points up for grabs each game, a ladder, re-bowling wides and no-balls and if you re out, you re out. For some of the boys this took a while to get use to, but slowly started to understand that going out is apart of cricket, and as cricket is a team sport, going for quick runs and losing a wicket is sometimes what is required. This also taught them to put value on their wicket and especially in our split innings games, have wickets in hand for the second session. We lost our first three games, which were all very close and we could have actually won them all. We were never a realistic chance to make the finals after this. What the boys did though was to continue to listen, learn, train hard and improve in all areas of their game. We did win all but one game after xmas, highlighting their improvement. Our only loss late in the year was against Bayswater one of the top teams, on the 2 nd last ball. This proved that they were good enough to play finals. In the last game of the season we played Johnson Park. In a fantastic finish to the season, Will Fahey took 2/13, Ryan DeHaan got two run-outs and 6 boys made their highest score for the season: Rab Noonan 31*, Tahlen Fleischer 31*, Josh Spencer 30*, Tyren Utting 26, Campbell Dennison 23 and Sage Famer 14. Well done Sage (bowling) and Josh (batting) for their trophies and to Ben Grimes for winning the Coaches Award for his all round efforts and achievements. Congratulations also to Rab Noonan for being selected and playing in the FTGDCA U12 comp team. Josh Spencer was also selected but was not able to play in the tournament. I would like to thank the U12 team manager Kerrin Turney who did a great job organising many things and scoring every week. Thanks also to Mike, Peter, Hank, Dave, Matt, Simon, Grant, and Roger for your assistance at trainings and on Friday nights at different times during the season as well as all of the other family members for your terrific support during games. This team ran with 10 regular players throughout the season, so thanks to Lachlan Beecroft and Max Lamers for filling in occasionally. I was very proud of this teams sportsmanship and attitude in every game they played whether they won, lost or drew. They played their cricket in the right way the Monbulk way. I really hope this group of kids stick together, maybe find another player or two, then continue to train hard as I know they are capable of playing finals in the coming years and I know they will definitely continue to enjoy their cricket which is the most important aspect of any sport. Cheers, Steve Utting Above: The U12 s celebrating one of Josh Spencer s wickets v Upwey-Tecoma. He took 4 for 8. In this

Monbulk U10 Big Bash 2013 / 2014 Coach s Report For most of the boys, the season started back in September when we held a few indoor training sessions down at Lilydale. This was the first time that I met most of the boys, of which I think I had 14. I could tell right from the start how excited and talented they all were (as well as sometimes loud). We quickly added a few more boys to the roster as cricket fever hit schools around the area before the start of summer. At the first official Wednesday night training session we had 16 boys all in their whites ready to play, and about enough gear to accommodate half the number we had. The next week, we purchased a whole new kit of gear for the boys. The excitement was immense when they were all padded up with the latest gear and the first game fast approaching. Unfortunately, due to a scheduling mishap, the opposition for our first game failed to arrive. So we took it amongst ourselves to play a game of 8 a side. It was here that I was starting to see the huge improvement from the boys. They were listening to the advice given from myself and the other parents and it was certainly paying dividends. The first game was decided on the second last ball with some hearty celebrations. The season went well for the boys, being undefeated over the course of the year. A few more kids wanted to join around Christmas, which made our total 19 boys. The boys all showed an enormous improvement constantly through the course of the season, whether it be in the field, individual bowling and batting skills, or just little techniques like backing up or sliding the bat. However, for me the best development the boys displayed was the growth of their confidence and sportsmanship. There was nothing better than seeing the grin on a child s face after hearing his teammates encouraging him. The boys were subject to a lot of experimentation with the format of their games: 2 teams playing on different grounds, 4 teams playing on the same ground, rotating kids on and off the ground. Not once did the boys complain about the way that the games were run, but would rather just enjoy the fact that they were playing and improving at a game they all loved. It was my first season as a coach and I could not have managed without a lot of support from Steve Utting and Steve Bohun with organisation and assistance in trainings. A lot of the parents were more than willing to lend a hand at training, at the matches managing the boys and even umpiring when required. Thank you to the parents for coming and cheering the kids on and for helping out whenever asked or offered on a Wednesday or Friday. And lastly, thank you to the 19 boys who I have developed a great respect for as cricketers and people. I hope that I get the privilege to develop your cricketing skills and that one day play alongside you at Monbulk. Duncan Maher

Milo in2cricket 2013 / 2014 This season the Monbulk Milo in2cricket program was once again a success for the cricket club with its ability to not only bring through the next generation of Monbulk players, but also the opportunity it creates for families to become welcome members of the club as a whole. This season we had over 110 children registered; once again comprising 5 groups and the popular girls group. The girls once again had the chance to attend Day 3 of the Boxing Day Test playing cricket on the MCG. We were also afforded the opportunity with a Victorian Spirit cricketer Alana King paying a visit to the girls, plus a premier cricketer Brendan Walsh running a clinic for the Bushrangers. The program is not able to run without the support of the many dedicated and selfless volunteers including the coaches, Chris Defina, Darren Powers, Al Hylton-Stewart, Clayton Spooner, Josh Rak and Dave Daly, as well as the many that assisted in the coaching of the groups. The bar and BBQ were extremely well run thanks to the efforts of Cliff and his helpers behind the bar and Troy, Matt, Fiona and the many others that ran the BBQ and BBQ prep. Looking to the future, we look forward to having many of this year s milo participants in our juniors and seniors programs.
