Support our Sponsors in 2012/13 Senior Cricket Results and Reviews A3 Round 4 vs Sacred Heart Old Collegians at Sacred Heart College Senior School on 1 and 8 December Sacred Heart 161 and 7/77 defeated Hope Valley 113 and 142 on first innings On December 1 the undefeated A's ventured down to Sacred Heart College to play the undefeated Sacred Heart Old Collegians. Watto won the toss and elected to bat on a rather warm morning that was deteriorating with the odd shower forecast. Unfortunately our batting also deteriorated as we lost early wickets. Gents was caught behind off the first ball, followed soon by Madigan, bowled for 0 while padding up and McNally, lbw for 0. We were 3/1 and in trouble. Wilkins and Watson started to put things right while adding 30, but we then lost 3 more quick wickets. Wilkins was bowled for 14, Wood lbw for 0 and McPhee (playing his first A Grade match for some time) caught in slips for 2. We
were now 6/36 and in deep trouble. Sykes joined Watson and the pair started to get us out of trouble, but Sykes got a howler lbw decision and he went for 21 with the score 7/79. It was getting clear that any ball that struck the pads had a good chance of a successful appeal! O Connor was caught for 3 (8/88), Watson was caught for a well-compiled 58 (9/103) and Eckermann was caught for 8 with Massacci not out 5. We had limped to 113 under some good bowling, but very poor batting. The SHOC spearhead had taken 6/15 off 10.2 overs. The innings had finished a few minutes before the tea break and the mood of the coach was not improved when the umpires made us take the normal 20 minutes for the tea break and an extra 10 minutes for the change of innings, despite the protests of both sides. It appeared the umpires should re-acquaint themselves with the rules for breaks as well as the lbw law. Nevertheless, we eventually started the SHOC innings and they were soon in trouble. Madigan got both openers lbw and they had lost 2/12. A partnership of 36 followed, but Massacci got a nice caught and bowled and bamboozled the next batsman to have him stumped. We were back in with a chance at 4/48. Another partnership followed, but was broken by Sykes at 5/76. Another lbw to Wilkins had them 6/80 and it was clear the umpires had not changed their interpretation of the lbw law. Madigan came back on and got another lbw (7/96) and a run-out by O Connor had them 8/102. However, they negotiated past our score and then hit out lustily to be 9 down with another wicket to Madigan off the last ball of the day. On day 2, they continued batting and added another 31 runs to be all out for 161. Madigan took the last wicket to give him a well-deserved 5/30 off 11.1 overs. Massacci took 2/20, Sykes 1/9 and Wilkins 1/20. With little to gain from the rest of the match except some good batting practice, the second innings started much the same way as the first. Madigan got a pair by padding up and was bowled for 0 1/0. Wilkins made 6 (2/16), Gentile 13 (3/22), Watson lbw for 11 to a ball that everyone said would have missed another set of stumps (4/41), Wood got a pair (5/45) and McPhee 0 (6/45). We still needed 4 runs to make them bat again and things were looking grim. McNally and O Connor negotiated those runs and started to look ok, at which stage yours truly decided he had had enough of the batting and the cold weather and headed off to watch the Bs thrilling win at home. Without my support, O Connor made 34, Sykes 11, McNally 56, Eckermann 7 and Massacci was 0 not out. We had got to 142 and gave SHOC 19 overs to score 95 for an outright. They were 7/77 off those 19 overs with McNally 3/22, Sykes 2/10 and Madigan 1/15 the wicket-takers. Neil Eckermann Round 5 vs Modbury at Hope Valley Oval on 22 December Hope Valley 2/381 Wilkins 178* Watson 124* defeated Modbury 94 Eckermann 4/9 (10) on the first innings After a disappointing result against SHOC last round the A grade were looking to regain some form against local arch rivals Modbury. Modbury won the toss and for some weird reason decided to bowl with only 10 players. BAD MISTAKE. Alex Gentile hit 10 off the first over to get us off to a flyer, continued to play his shots and brought up his 50 before drinks. From Drinks on it was
like watching Port Adelaide playing Geelong in the 2007 Grand Final as Aidan Wilkins demolished his former side with his maiden century in the ATCA competition, Aidan blasted 178 not out off only 150 in one of the best batting displays for Hope Valley I have ever seen. Captain Michael Watson also enjoyed batting as he notched up his second hundred for the year scoring 124 not out off 88 balls, the pair put on an amazing 297 run partnership and demolished the worst leg spinner in world cricket in the final overs to take us to 2/381 off 50 overs. Not only conceding 381 runs Modbury made the terrible decision of skipping Neil s afternoon tea, we took full advantage of their decision and ate it all. The cake deserves a special mention. We started slowly with the ball and it wasn t until drinks where we realised it was too hot to play cricket and started to take some wickets. The bowling attack was led by Paul Eckermann who bowled an amazing spell of 10 overs straight taking 4/9. Paul also ripped himself off by getting a run out from the boundary and costing himself a 5 for. Jarrad Sykes (who looked like Hugh Jackman that day) also bowled extremely well and had very tidy figures of 1/13 off 8 and ensured that we could come close to victory. 2 wickets and a run out for Steve Canala ended the day with Modbury finishing on 94, falling just short of the 381 run target. In easily our most dominant performance of the season, we go into the Christmas break with confidence but need to ensure that we are relentless for our remaining four games to ensure we are in premiership contention. Hope everyone has had a good Christmas and New Year. Nic Massacci B1 Round 5 vs Woodville South at Ledger Reserve on 22 December Woodville South 202 (45.5) defeated Hope Valley 134 (38.4) Bowling: Connelly 3/29, Weber 3/34, Jerome 2/41, De Conno 1/27, Rio 1/49. Batting: Hunter 28 (2 fours), Weber 24 (5 fours), Spooner 22 (3 sixes) Final round before the Festive break saw the B-grade finally on the road against Woodville South. The home side won the toss and elected to bat. Trav and Josh Connelly opened the bowling; Josh got us away, bowling their opener for 0 with the score on 13. Trav then picked up the other opener with a catch to Micky Neal. 2/ more runs were added to the total, when Josh picked up his second with a snick through to Josh Thompson in his first B-grade game for the season. Their number 5 troubled no one LBW to Connelly 4/27. The fifth wicket put on 38 before De Conno kicked off a mini collapse, picking up their number 6 legbefore, and Jerome collecting 2 wickets in the next over (caught Connelly and LBW) to have the home side in trouble at 7/71. Their number 4 (who d had a few lives) and number 9 put on 94 for the 8 th wicket; Heathy finally trapping their number 9 in front with the score at 165. The next partnership put on 37 to take the score to 202 again, Heath bowling their number 10 for 20 and having their number 11 caught by our 12 th man, Andrew Murray, for 0. Their number 4 remained 70 not out.
Our run chase started with Andrew Hunter (first game for the year) and Azza. Azza was the first to go, caught behind for 15 with the score on 29. Ben Canala joined Andrew and made 13 before being caught at square leg by a blinder! I was about 2 metres away. 2/47. Heath was in next and he and Andrew added 39 runs until both were dismissed with the score on 86. Heathy made 24 and Andrew top-scored with 28. Greggy and Micky Neal were the new batsmen; both dismissed with the score on 91 Greg caught for 0 and Micky stumped for 5. De Conno and Connelly were the next pairing Josh LBW for 2 on 93. Spooner (22) joined his captain for a fairly one-sided 26-run partnership (including 3 sixes) before Spoony was bowled around his legs. 8/119 still 83 behind. Thompson was caught for 0. Rio (8) was the last man in; cracking a couple to the boundary until the skipper (8) skied a pull shot to wide-ish mid-on. Our first loss; a disappointing finish to the day after starting well in the field. We go into the break on top of the B1 ladder and pumped for the second-half of the season. Jonno B-grade Captain T20 Division 1 Round 2 vs Brahma Lodge at Hope Valley Oval on 20 November Hope Valley 5/158 (20 overs) defeated Brahma Lodge 7/136 (20 overs) Our second T20 was against A2 side Brahma Lodge. Watto won the toss and batted with Mcnally and O Connor opening. O Connor made 3 off 5 balls and Watson 6 off 9 to have us 2/30. Gentile joined McNally and they added 106 for the 3 rd wicket. Gents was run out for 40 off 35. Spooner was out first ball trying to force the pace in the final overs and McNally also for a brilliant 82 off 54 without adding to the score. We had lost 3/0. McPhee (7) and Madigan (14) added another valuable 22 runs to have us 5/158 at the end of 20 overs. Madigan and Sykes opened the bowling and Madigan got an early breakthrough to have them 1/8. After a partnership of 38, McNally got both with the score on 46. Another partnership of 58 followed when Watson came on to bowl spin and he took 3 wickets off his 2 overs (2 stumped) with wickets at 104, 114 and 115. The 7 th wicket went to McNally at 119 and they negotiated the remaining overs to finish with 7/136 off their 20 overs. Bowling: Madigan 1/26 off 4, Sykes 0/17 off 3, Nash 0/18 off 2, McNally 3/22 off 4, Massacci 0/31 off 4, Spooner 1/10 off 1 and Watson 3/7 off 2. Neil Eckermann T20 Division 1 Round 3 vs Para Hills at Silver Stream Oval No1 on 11 December Para Hills 5/110 (18.3 overs) defeated Hope Valley 7/108 (20.0 overs) Our third T20 was against Para Hills. They had Greg Blewett and we had selected Jeff Vaughan. However we got a message that Wilkins would be late due to work commitments and we were not sure if Vaughan would make it on time, either. Getting close to match time, we made the decision to replace Vaughan with Simon McPhee who was getting ready to play for the second eleven at Para Hills second oval. We won the toss and batted, with Jason McNally and Michael Watson opening. McNally hit the second ball he faced down the throat of deep mid-wicket and we
were 1/10. Alex Gentile didn t score off 12 deliveries and we were 2/23. Alex Wood made 2 off 13 with the score 3/48. James Nash (10 off 15) and Watto moved the score to 74, then we lost Nash, McPhee (2 off 4), Brett Madigan (5 off 9) and Watto (53 off 49) to slump to 7/87. Some sensible batting from Paul Eckermann (6 off 5) and Mark Collyer (15 off 10) took the final score to 110. Aiden Wilkins finally made the field at the start of the second over of Para Hills innings. Our bowling and fielding was good, but the target was never going to be enough and Para Hills passed our total with 9 balls to spare. Madigan had figures of 1/22 off 3, McNally 2/23 off 3.3, Wilkins 0/18 off 4, Nic Massacci 0/13 off 2, Eckermann 1/19 off 4 and Watson 1/8 off 2. We made the final 16, but our batting has to improve immensely if we are to go further in this competition. Neil Eckermann T20 Finals Division 1 Round 1 vs Rostrevor Old Collegians at Rostrevor College on 5 January Hope Valley 4/178 (20.0 overs) defeated Rostrevor 138 (20.0 overs) We knew our batting performance in the previous game against Para Hills was not acceptable, but we also knew we had a team capable of responding in a positive manner. Rostrevor won the toss and sent us in. We weren t disappointed with that decision. Jason McNally and Heath Weber opened the batting and were quickly on top. McNally plundered the attack and Weber provided solid support. McNally was bowled for 50 off 27 balls and the score was 1/81 in the 8th over. Soon after, Weber missed a full toss and was out LBW for 24 off 26 2/82. The run rate then slowed for a while with some good bowling from Rostrevor s leggie. Jarrad Sykes compiled 6 off 14 (3/109) and Simon McPhee 6 off 4 (4/125) when Alex Gentile joined captain Michael Watson. They took the score to 4/178 off the allotted 20 overs with Watto slamming 70 off 41 and Gents assisting with 9 off 7. Defending the target was never going to be a problem, but Rostrevor were able to score a few more than we would have liked. Fielding was good with run-outs to Paul Eckermann, Shaun O Connor and Weber. Heath was particularly pleased with his swoop on the ball and a direct hit from side on everyone else was amazed as he had tried a few times earlier without coming close to hitting. 5 bowlers were used with Brett Madigan 1/20, McNally 1/32, Eckermann 2/39, Sykes 1/17 and Watson 2/24. This now puts us in the final 8 with our next match against Woodville South at Hope Valley Oval on Australia Day at 1:00pm. See you there. Neil Eckermann B3 Round 5 vs Marion at Marion Oval Hope Valley 151 defeated Marion 88 and 247 Bowling: 1 st Innings Heading 4/17, Blaess 3/24, Zappia 2/8. 2 nd Innings Huddy 2/26, Zappia 2/41, Ellershaw 2/27. Batting: A Sykes 37, Zappia 23.
LOA Round 9 vs Kensington at St Pauls College Hope Valley 9/181 (40.0 overs) defeated Kensington 7/171 (40.0 overs) As the A and B Grade matches had been washed out, I had the chance to see our Cs or Ds as both matches were getting underway. The Cs were playing on the other side of town at Marion, so I elected a shorter trip to watch the LOAs at our second home ground at St Pauls College. We were without our regular Captain, Chappy, but the side had gained the services of Jason McNally from the As as he wasn t available for the second day of their match. He substituted for Chappy as Captain for the day. We lost the toss and were asked to bat on a well-grassed pitch. Peter Johnson and Dan Seljan opened the batting, but both were out without bothering the scorers. We were 2/6. Heath Weber joined McNally and they commenced to plunder the attack. Weber finally went for one big hit too many, misstimed and was out for 37 and we were 3/84. McNally had further partnerships of 21 with Stephen Bennett (6), 5 with Peter Butcher (0) and 31 with Grant Bowen (0) to progress the score to 6/141. Starting to run out of partners, McNally was also out for 97 and the score at 7/150. That brought Yash Sood and Brendan Sims together and they added a valuable 25 with resolute defence and a bit of lusty hitting. Sims made 6, then Dushy Pundir (2) and Sood added another 6 runs for the 9 th wicket. Sood finished unbeaten on 15, Andrew Massacci was 0 not out and we had negotiated the full 40 overs. 9/181 was a good score, but a little more application from some of the top seven could have seen a bigger total. Weber and Massacci opened the bowling and Massacci had a wicket in his first over, caught behind. Weber also picked up a wicket to put a bit of pressure on the visiting side. At the end of their spell of 5 overs each, Kensington were starting to get on top of us, but Sims broke the partnership to have them 3/50 odd and we were slightly on top with Butcher also bowling well. Their 4 th wicket partnership then started to turn the game in their favour. They kept the good balls out and punished the loose ones. McNally bowled some of his leggies in partnership with Pundir without success, before reverting to his quicks from a short run-up. Weber joined him from the other end and they both bowled out their 9 overs. The partnership was eventually broken by Massacci with a good catch taken by Sims in the outfield - 4/150 odd. The other partner also went a few balls later when he was run out due to a mix-up and they were 5 down. Things were starting to turn in our favour, but Kensington showed they still had some batting to come and our score was still within their reach. McNally and Massacci were hard to get away, Butcher came back and took a wicket and after another run-out, we had them 7/171 at the end of their 40 overs. Weber had 1/38 off 9, Massacci 2/39 off 8, Sims 1/19 off 5, Butcher 1/16 off 6, McNally 0/38 off 9 and Pundir 0/17 off 3. The bowlers appreciated a decent score to defend. This was a hard-fought win and a much-needed one. The song was sung with much gusto. Neil Eckermann
Round 10 vs Old Scotch at St Pauls College Hope Valley 72 defeated by Old Scotch 2/73 Batting: Butcher 41* Bowling: Chapman 2/13 Junior Cricket Results and Reviews U/17 Round 5 vs Modbury at Modbury Oval Hope Valley 81 (22.3 overs) defeated Modbury 71 (25.2 overs) U/15 Round 5 vs Payneham 4 at Wellington Oval Payneham 4/188 (36.0 overs) defeated Hope Valley 96 (31.4 overs) U/13 Blue Round 5 vs Walkerville Blue at Walkerville Oval Match abandoned due to rain affected pitch U/13 Red Round 5 vs Walkerville Red at Hope Valley Oval Match abandoned due to rain affected pitch U/11 Round 5 vs Modbury Blue at The Heights School Hope Valley 6/107 (30.0 overs) defeated Modbury 5/95 (30.0 overs) U/9 Round 5 vs Eastern Suburbs at St Pauls College Hope Valley 5/62 (20.0 overs) defeated Eastern Suburbs 2/60 (20.0 overs) WOW, Who says U/9 cricket is boring- What an exciting finish to go into the x-mas break! Reuben Fairbank was nominated captain for this 1 day game but Eastern Suburbs won the toss and elected to bat. The Dragons got away to a good start with some early boundaries but a wicket to Ambarish Dave and shortly later another one to Adam Murray (his first ever) slowed their run rate. With some good accurate bowling from Reuben, Joshua Manning (rewarded with an extra over), Max Speyer, Cooper Whitbread and all the boys in general having a good day with the ball the Dragons were restricted to 60 runs from their 20 overs. A good effort in the field. Our turn to bat and the opposition opening bowler was the best bowler the boys have faced this year being both fast and accurate and after the first over he had us in trouble having bowled a double wicket maiden to have us 2/0. After this the boys settled down and Nathan Becker played his best innings this season scoring 16 to get us back on track. Other batsmen to contribute by batting through
and not get out were Adam, Noel Kumar, Jake Madigan (will have a nice bruise on his ribs), Cooper, Joshua and Reuben. With our score creeping up steadily we reached the 20 th over with the score at 5/59 needing just 2 runs to win but their opening bowler then returned to bowl the final over. With Samuel Bartel and Max Speyer at the crease they couldn t get the ball away and after 4 balls we still required 2 to win with excitement at fever pitch among the crowd. They got the fifth ball away for a quick single and in attempting the runout the boys came back for an overthrow sealing the win for the Hope Valley Demons. An exciting win for the boys and a nice way to break for Christmas! Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all at Hope Valley Cricket Club from the U/9s.
