Crawford was well clear of the field with five wins from six games. This was a top performance. In the B8 ladies singles Carolyn Crawford had a surprise loss the previous day by to the Hong Kong player to go with a 21-1 win over South Africa. Two wins in the final rounds saw her win Gold. 2 Page 2 On The Mat On The Green News Diary of the World Disabled Games 17/2 Opening Day The disabled players within the NZ team (see attached photo) began their singles campaigns with a positive start. Collectively they achieved five wins from eight games with Carolyn Crawford leading the way with two victories and over Hong Kong and Australia respectively. This section has only four players in it so they will be playing a double round robin competition. Pam Walker and Bruce Wakefield both played only one game and they both won those. New Zealand Team /2 Day 1 In the B6 division Pam Walker and Peter Wylie lost to pair from Korea. In the B8 division Carolyn Crawford and Dave Doman lost to South Africa. 19/2 Day 2 There was no play in the B6 division yesterday for Pam Walker and Peter Wylie. In the B7 division Heather Cornelius and Bruce Wakefield suffered two losses while in the B8 division Carolyn Crawford and Dave Dornan lost their morning round to Australia but bounced back to beat Korea in the afternoon. All three of the disabled pair s combinations will be in action at Naenae today. 20/2 Day 3 The medal haul has a chance to be added to today as in the B6 mixed pairs in the disabled (rather than blind) group Pam Walker and Peter Wylie scored a decisive win over Australia in the morning game and followed that up with a win over Korea. This puts them clearly in second place going into the last two rounds today. In the B8 mixed pairs Carolyn Crawford and Dave Dornan also had a win and a loss yesterday. Today they would also need two wins and other results going in their favour to be in medal contention. 21/2 Day 4 In the B8 division Carolyn Crawford and Dave Dornan had a bye in the morning before they beat the Gold medal winning pair from South Africa in the last round. This meant they finished fourth in their event. Two earlier losses by two shots earlier in the competition certainly cost them a medal. The B6 pair of Pam Walker and Peter Wylie needed at least one but preferably two wins yesterday. Unfortunately they dropped both games against Australia and South Africa to finish fourth in the competition. 22/2 Day 5 In the B8 ladies singles Carolyn Crawford (see attached photo) is leading the medal charge with two wins from two games. This division did not play yesterday but with two rounds over the next two days Carolyn certainly looms as a medal prospect. Kevin Smith

6 Page 6 On The Mat Macandrew Bay Bowling Club is 70 Years Young Macandrew Bay Bowling Club is celebrating it s 70th year of establishment in May this year. As one of the "youngest" clubs in Dunedin, our members take pride in the fact that just after World War II, about 1947, a group of residents in the "Bay" met in a private home and decided to form a bowls club. The first thing they resolved to do was approach a Mr Edwards, who had a market garden and he agreed to a bowling green being formed alongside Opening Day c1950 his house. The contour of the land was quite a slope, but with excavation it was enough to form a green 112ft by 112ft. The earth-moving machinery of the day was not as sophisticated as in the 21st century. The bulldozer was a converted crawler tractor, which only managed to graze some of the hardwhack clay, so a resident with explosives knowledge was tasked to "blow" the said rotten rock. The writer, as a youth of 7 or 8 remembers riding in the trucks which took the spoil to a local resident's section. The womenfolk of the suburb raised money by running cake stalls, come hell or high water, in front of the shops. They needed plenty of clothing on some of the colder days. In 1953 the Club affiliated with Bowls New Zealand. On opening day a recording was made by Radio 4ZB. The record was found in a rubbish dumpster some years later. The record was so large it would not fit on any of our members' record players, so 4ZB was approached and agreed to transcribe onto a tape. The record is on display in our clubrooms to this day. We are one of a relatively few bowling clubs which own their own land. Our Club has had a number of Dunedin representative players over the years, not a bad effort for a small club which has probably never had more than 50 members. We were the first club in the Dunedin centre to amalgamate the women's and men's sections, having had combined committee meetings for some years before officially forming one club. Though small in numbers the Macandrew Bay Club has had some success in Interclub Competitions. The Men have won the George Payton Memorial Trophy for overall Interclub wins on two occasions and 2005, and the J Hope Shield for Wednesday Interclub in 1982 and 1997, a sterling effort for such a small club. Macandrew Bay won its first and only Men s Centre Championship Title in 1959 with Lawrence Woodhouse winning the Christmas Singles. However Jim Howarth (1985) and F Fraser (2001) won the Champion of Champions Junior Men s Singles titles. It is the women s members though who have had the most success, particularly in the 1960 s and 1970 s when Macandrew Bay Ladies were a real force to reckon with. Mora Bewley, Gwen Don, Geertje Kruishoop and Edna Simpson started the ball rolling by winning the Friendship Junior Fours in In 1969 two of this team Mora Bewley and Edna Simpson were joined by Muriel Mitchell and Grace Toms to win the Otago Open Fours. Eight years later in 1977 Mrs Bewley, Mitchell, Toms and Mrs E Callick repeated this effort in winning the Otago Fours. In 1978 Mrs Toms won the Otago Singles to cap off this very successful era for Macandrew Bay. In 2000 Mrs Mitchell was made a Life Member of the Otago Women s Bowling Centre in recognition for her many years of work, which included a term as President in Mrs Simpson was also elected Centre President in (The History of Bowls Dunedin Centre excerpt)

7 Volume 1, Issue 6 Website Hints We have had members who are having problems accessing the Interclub Draws and Centre Events Tabs on the Bowls Dunedin website. The solution to this problem could quite possibly be to switch from the old Internet Explorer Search to Google Chrome which ties in with Google docs. Therefore it should no longer be a problem to access these spreadsheets. Google Chrome is a freeware web browser developed by Google. This will enable you to view Google.docs on the Bowls Dunedin website that you otherwise may not have been able to do so previously. So if you don t have Google Chrome already you can obtain a free download by doing a web search via i.e Google and go from there. Intenet Explorer [a] (formerly Microsoft Internet Explorer and Windows Internet Explorer, is the commonly used web browser that you should switch from.
