1 POWERBOAT NEWSLETTER No. 4/16 October 2016 this is an amazing pristine area of Moreton Bay with Turtles, Dugong, Dolphin and bird life. CROOZIN NOOZ From SYC CRUISING FLOTILLA Kooringal Cruise :- Saturday with a forecast of wind 20 knots N NW, the cruise flotilla of 8 vessels travelled to the Fishermans Channel at Oak Island to anchor overnight. On Sunday with winds to increase to 30 knots we moved into the Logan River anchoring in the lee of Lagoon Island with sundowners on board Samadhi and Rhoneal the next morning we took the tenders and explored the area around Lagoon Island. Being so close to the South Passage Bar the water is crystal clear with Starfish, Sea cucumbers Stingrays and other marine life easily viewable in depths of 4-5 metres. The dinghy run took up most of the morning then it was back to the Gutter Bar for lunch and afternoon games organised by Aurora. On Tuesday with the weather improving the flotilla travelled to Blaksley's for lunch then onto Myora for an overnight anchorage with sundowners on board Lady Capri. The next morning with near perfect conditions we proceeded to Kooringal via the Rainbow and Rous Channels crossing into Days Gutter on the top of the tide in time for lunch at the Gutter Bar. Thursday morning was again perfect weather of light variable winds, it was a Dinghyfari through Hendersons and Frasers Gutter to the Blue Hole Unfortunately all good things must end so just before high tide on Friday the flotilla left Days Gutter crossing into the Rous Channel and proceeding to Browns Point at Canaipa where we were joined by 3 other SYC boats that night it was dinner ashore at the Russell Island Bowls Club and the cruise concluded next morning with

2 breakfast ashore at RQYS Canaipa courtesy of Sky Lady and Tranquillity who had each won a breakfast tray at the bowls club the previous evening. 3 GOODWILL CUP 2016 SYC Powerboat Championship This seasons events are underway with the running of the Power Boat Committee Trophy on October 8 and the Cutty Sark Open on October 9. The PBC Trophy is also the first leg of the Dux Sub Series and is sponsored by Wymark Sirius Insurance Brokers. We had a small field for this event, with two of our regular boats cruising up north around Yeppoon and a couple of other members on overseas holidays. But the event was keenly fought with Van Man VC Power Graham and Fay Webb coming home first with 15 points over 15 checkpoints on Raw scores. Two points behind in second place was Finky Dink Too PC Mal Wood followed by current Club Champion Peter Brown Bipty Bipty. It s time for the Cup to come back to SYC. This year we have a strong team of eighteen boats representing SYC in our annual battle against RQYS on Moreton Bay. The event is run in two divisions Traditional and GPS on Saturday November 5. We last won the Cup two years ago and we are keen to bring it back to finish off the club s 70 th Anniversary Year in fine style. The Goodwill Cup has a great tradition of competition between our two great clubs, but is also a great social weekend at RQYS Canaipa anchorage. The Handicap section was won by Maxine Dennis Watt from Steve and Margot Manchester aboard Belle Tempo. The new Middle Five award was taken out by Rob Deshon on Rare Pleasure

4 The Cutty Sark Open which is for Traditional Navigation (Non GPS) was won by VC Power Graham and Fay Webb, who have had the perfect start to this years Championship. In second place was Mystique Lady Justin Sinnamon with Bell Tempo in third place. The Cutty Sark Open is the first round of three events that count towards the Cutty Sark Trophy. The other two traditional events are the Traditional section of the Goodwill Cup and the Past Commodore s Trophy. 5 CRUISING UP NORTH More of our members are making the winter trip up north every year. We know that at least Bob Kershaw Cats Away, Paul and Bobbie Matthews Martini, William and Allison Ewans Speranza, Lindsay and Sue Roberts Suella and Dennis and Jill Fountain "Justus" made the journey to various points up the coast over the last few months, we believe they are all now safely back on the Gold Coast.
