1 Newsletter October 2011 Campbeltown Sailing Club /: Welcome Another sailing season has flown past, the boats have been lifted out and the committee will be looking towards planning the winter activities. As I reach the end of my second year as Commodore I wish to thank the committee and members for their support and enthusiasm during the last two years. I know that the same support will be given to our incoming Commodore David Lord. I look forward to seeing you all at the AGM on the 16 th November and at various club events. Thank you again. AGM The Prize-Giving will be held at 7.30pm Saturday 12 th November. Following the prizegiving we have organised a talk which will be given by new members Malcolm and Catriona Trott. Entitled Cornwall to Scotland in 50 Days.The adventures of Cirrus Cat the talk will be about sailing their catamaran to its new home in Scotland. There will be a supper of soup and cheese and biscuits and for catering purposes please contact either Lindsay (Social Secretary) on or Bryan (Club Secretary) on secretary@campbeltownsc.co.uk This will be held in the clubhouse at 7.30pm on Wednesday 16 th November. All members are cordially invited and I am hoping for an even better turnout that last year! This is your club and it is important your views and ideas on the running of the club are heard. There will also be information on the progress of the Mooring subcommittee and their proposal for the management/ maintenance of this club facility. Your opinion on this topic is also vital I look forward to seeing you all on the 16 th!

2 Campbeltown Sailing Club Page 2 of 5 Cushendall Weekend CSBC turned out in force with 10 boats and over 70 members making the trip across the North Channel in perfect weather. Our members pulled out all the stops to provide hospitality on the Friday evening and Saturday lunchtime. The Seafield Hotel managed to squeeze all ninety-four of us for an excellent meal on the Saturday evening! The racing on Saturday afternoon saw 15 yachts cross the start line with a fresh southerly breeze and a determination to win. The race had a number of the usual kind of spinnaker mishaps and excitement and was probably the most enjoyable race of the season. Whilst Jochr and Stargazer came a credible 2 nd and 4 th against the faster Antrim boats ultimately CSBC won the overall North Channel Trophy. Aurora from CSBC won the new perpetual trophy, donated by Campbeltown Sailing Club to celebrate the 40 th Anniversary link between the two clubs. It is no mean feat for a small club such as ours to successfully pull off such a memorable event, especially when it coincides with the MOK fest. A heartfelt thank you to all those who helped to make this weekend such a success. West Highland Week Round Davaar Race Morning Star, Stargazer, Carna, Inspiration, Blue Liz and Eureka all took part in WHYW 2011 with mixed success. Unfortunately a number of races were cancelled due to the lack of wind so that greatly affected the point s series. Carna came 5 th in her class 8 and achieved a 2 nd in one race however it was Eureka who came 2 nd in Class 9 with one 1 st, two 2 nd and one 3 rd. In spite of the bad sailing conditions all crews enjoyed the week. The Round Davaar dinghy race took place on 18 th June with five racers Stuart Mc Quaker, Judy Orr, Andrew Mc Clement, Ian Logan and James Russell. Craig and Hazel Scally were on rescue boat duty. There were very light winds at the start with the wind strengthening after the Dhorlin was crossed. Judy Orr nicked it once again with smarter tactics as Andrew McClement was clearly ahead at Trench Point. Well-done Judy.

3 CSC Cruising News Cumhann Beag, Jura The Adventures of Shurig On our two-week cruise in July 2011, we visited Ardminish Bay (Gigha), Lowlandman s Bay and Craighouse (Jura), Scalascaig, Queens Bay, (Colonsay), Portnahaven and Lagavulin (Islay). We anchored everywhere apart from at Craighouse and Lagavulin.. Throughout our trip, we never used the GPS. Dave preferred the challenge of piloting the old-fashioned way! We took shelter in Lowlandman s Bay for two days from a Force 8 gale. It was impossible to get the dog ashore for a whole day. Next day we had the idea to warp out to shore with a fender attached. This meant Dave could row ashore downwind and pull himself back (one very happy little dog!). Despite the many days of great sailing conditions, Cumhann Beag provided the real highlight for both of us. We had read the sailing directions and studied the area many times prior to setting off and deliberated could we do it should we risk our little boat? We had the whole Inner Loch to ourselves for a day our sort of place with very dramatic scenery and so peaceful. Dave decided to row the tender into Cumhann Beag to check out the situation since there are spring rates of 8+ knots and, with all the rocks, little leeway for error. Upon his return, we again discussed everything fully and decided to tackle it the following morning. There was light wind and the tide was right so we set off. Normally, we chat about all sorts when we are sailing. This time we were totally focused. Dave was up front giving directions and I was on the tiller. It was eerily still around us. We got through the very narrow channel, around the spit, over the final sill that dries to 0.3 m and entered Top Pool where the depth suddenly became 22m. The return journey was equally as tense but upon re-entering the Inner Loch and safety, we admitted to each other that the journey had given us a real sense of achievement. Unfortunately, on the way out of the Outer Loch we hit a rock. No damage done but the incident reminded us that pride comes before a fall! Jenny and Dave Morris

4 Page 4 of 5 Campbeltown Sailing Club Campbeltown Sea Cadets Four cadets attended a training weekend at Port Edgar gaining- 1 young sailor scheme (stage 3) 1 young sailor scheme (stage 2) A rowing competent crew One cadet also completed an introduction to paddle sports. Two instructors recently completed rowing qualifications and hope to become accredited instructors early next year. Boating will continue into October when we will revert to our winter training programme of seamanship, communications and leadership training. Further information on the Sea Cadet organisation in general can be found at Kintyre Canoe Club The canoe club autumn/ winter activities have so far comprised Pool sessions on the last Friday of each month and some outdoor sessions on the weekends in between. The last planned outdoor session; 24 October was cancelled because of a poor forecast. The next outdoor session will be Saturday 12 November. The venue will depend on the weather on the day. There are pool sessions planned for 25 Nov and 9 December. The November pool session will be based on Canoe polo and members will get a chance to get involved in this exciting demanding and fun sport. There will be a social/curry Night after the pool session on the 9 December. An EGM is organised for Tuesday 1 November, at 8 pm at the community education centre. Certain changes to the constitution are required to validate the clubs affiliation to the Scottish Canoe association. The junior branch of KCC (i.e. Campbeltown Grammar school canoe club) is running two successful pool sessions on Thursday evening for approximately 30 school students aged from 12 to 17.

5 Dinghy Section The Clubhouse Low Askomil Campbeltown PA28 6EP Secretary: Bryan McClement townsc.co.uk Commodore: Alison Leask ernet.com Campbeltown Grammar School Dinghy Sailing Club continued to meet on Thursday evenings until the end of September this year before the dark nights and the change in the weather forced us to bring the season to an end. Our numbers were at times a bit disappointing this year although those who did take to the water were both competent and enjoyed learning new skills and racing against each other using the club Laser Picos as well as the clubs and Mr McQuaker's laser. We used some of our funds from the school this year to purchase a new laser radial rig, including a new sail to encourage our more competent sailors to move on to sail the laser. A number of our members enjoyed the challenges of sailing this boat. Should any club member wish to sail this club laser with this new sail over the winter months please get in touch.
