4 Subject Verb Agreement It is the subject which determines the verb. When a subject is with its correct verb, we call it as Subject Verb Agreement. A singular subject takes a singular verb and a plural subject takes a plural verb. The important thing is to recognize if the subject is singular or plural and then identify the singular or plural verb. Ex: He eats an apple. I eat an apple.

5 When two subjects are joined by and it becomes a plural subject and hence would take a plural verb. E.g. The Principal and the staff are absent today. The doctor and the nurse work together. When two subjects are joined by OR/NOR/EITHER... OR/NEITHER.NOR the verb must agree with the subject nearer to the verb. E.g. Neither Kiran or his friends are attending the meeting today. Neither his friends or Kiran is attending the meeting today.

6 E.g.(contd.): Philip or his colleagues have arranged for this party. His Colleagues or Philip has arranged for this party. If the subject is singular and the predicate is plural, the verb must agree with the number of the subject and not the predicate. E.g. The key to success is hard work and perseverance. Hard work and Perseverance are the key to success.

7 Indefinite pronouns such as SOMEONE/SOMEBODY/ONE/NO ONE /EVERYONE/ANYONE/ANYBODY/EACH/EVERYBODY etc. are singular subjects which would take a singular verb. One of them is absent today. Somebody has cleaned my desk. Everybody is silent. Each one of us works very hard.

8 Indefinite pronouns like SEVERAL/FEW/MANY/BOTH are plural subjects and hence take a plural verb. Several members of the group attend parties regularly. Few of them have lost their job. Collective nouns are singular when the members of the group work together. They are plural when the members of the group act individually. The jury has reached its verdict. The jury have argued for hours together.

9 E.g. (contd.) : The team is ready. The team are getting ready. Some nouns in the plural form represent an amount, a fraction or an element of time. In such cases they have to be treated as singular nouns. Six miles is not a long distance. One third of this population speaks English.

10 When two subjects are joined using AS WELL AS the verb should agree with the first subject. My friend as well as his parents is very orthodox in nature. The workers as well as the management have agreed to meet the deadline. The subject Many a. is always followed by a singular verb. E.g. Many a student has made a mistake in this section.

11 When two subjects are joined using with the verb should agree with the first subject. E.g. : The principal together with his staff members is on vacation. The staff members together with the principal are on vacation. THE number of.. takes a singular verb whereas A number of takes a plural verb. The number of bookings is very less. A number of bookings are cancelled.

12 Sometimes two subjects express a single entity or idea. In such cases treat them as singular. Bread and butter is her only diet. Soup and salad has always been my favorite supper. When adjectives like less/little/more/much etc. are used with nouns they have to be treated as singular. Less than hundred people regularly attends this meeting. A few good habits makes our life happy and comfortable.
