Role of key influencers in Youth Sport: Parents (& Umpires)
Positive Coaching Scotland Key Influencers
Question! Why do children and young people participate in Curling? For fun and enjoyment To improve their skills To get fit To play as part of a team For the challenge of competition Why do children and young people drop out of sport? Pressure to win Pressure to train Wanted to do other things
NSPCC RESEARCH A STUDY OF YOUNG PEOPLES WORRIES IN SPORT (June 2015) Young people told us the most common worries in sport were: Top 5: 1. Bullying 2. Pressure to perform 3. Pressure from parents/carers 4. Pressure from coaches 5. Balancing sport & social life
WORKING TOGETHER OUR COLLECTIVE AIM Athletes & Competition Coaches & Support (especially Parents) * Officials & Technicians
The Spirit of Curling Curling is a game of skill and of tradition. A shot well executed is a delight to see and it is also a fine thing to observe the time-honoured traditions of curling being applied in the true spirit of the game. Curlers play to win, but never to humble their opponents. A true curler never attempts to distract opponents, nor to prevent them from playing their best, and would prefer to lose rather than to win unfairly. Curlers never knowingly break a rule of the game, nor disrespect any of its traditions. Should they become aware that this has been done inadvertently, they will be the first to divulge the breach.
The Spirit of Curling While the main object of the game of curling is to determine the relative skill of the players, the spirit of curling demands good sportsmanship, kindly feeling and honourable conduct. This spirit should influence both the interpretation and the application of the rules of the game and also the conduct of all participants on and off the ice.
Role of the Umpire Assist teams - answer questions, provide information Ensure fair play between teams Be neutral and fair in decision making Intervene only to make corrections or if a rule is broken Perform measures
Essential Umpiring Qualities Impartial maintain the principles of fair play and uphold the standards of the game at all times. Remember "The Spirit of Curling" Honest act with integrity on and off the ice Competent be well prepared and up to date with rules and procedures Consistent be consistent in your interpretation of the rules Respectful for athletes, other umpires and officials, and also the rules that define and govern the sport of curling
Practically! Say hello to umpires when team arrive! Turn up on time for any meeting/information before your team's first game Encourage your team to be ready to play when it is their turn Question/clarification of rule- ask umpire, not team (during game) But what if not the team coach? No communication or coaching with team during game (except mid-game breaks) Disciplinary Guidelines
Practically! Can I go into field of play during a game? Where should I meet my team after game finishes? What if other team breaking rules/poor etiquette? Can I applaud a good shot? Feedback from umpire to coach (after game)?
Great Umpires What Coaches and Parents should expect Prepared/organised/routines Competent Consistent Show Leadership Clear identification of roles and responsibilities No assumptions No bias/preferences Wendy Morgan, Team Coach of Canada at 2015 World Women Curling Championship
Great Umpires Approachable Decisive Interpret rules fairly, ethically and with common sense Punctual Professional Sense of Humour Characteristics of Great Coaches Exactly the same as Great Umpires!!!!!!
Alan, do you think it will go to an extra end? I hope not my feet are freezing!!
