THE KANON STANDARD BALL MACHINE OPERATING MANUAL

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Please read these instructions to understand how to use your ball machine effectively and safely To ensure the Kanon Machine functions properly under a range of external factors, eg: low voltage and/or high altitude, a simple device has been introduced, which must be set for either Hard Kanon balls or Tennis/Slazballs. Slide the small white tab either left or right depending on the type of ball in use. (see illustration) A mixture of both hard and soft balls is not recommended. Use either one type or another in a given session. DO DON T Ensure your voltage is correct (220v 240v 50 Hz 1 phase) Ensure the air intake (2) holes (between wheels underneath) are completely clear Operate the machine on a level surface Supervise inexperienced people using the machine Keep clear of barrel when the machine is firing Give your machine an occasional shine with a little car wax and keep free of dust accumulating in the hopper and rotor Use the cover when not in use Obstruct the air passing out of the barrel. The power drive has a flow of air through it at all times to prevent overheating Put any objects into the machine or its parts other than tennis balls or our specially approved cricket practice balls Allow the machine to get wet and don t use wet balls Let children play with the machine unsupervised - it is NOT a toy Attempt any repairs while the machine is connected to a power source Attempt to repair, modify or remove electrical covers, cables or components

- 4 - PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION The energy used to propel the ball is pressurized air via a blower motor controlled by an on/off switch (8) The air enters the motor via the air intake (2). A hopper (1) is provided from which balls are fed by a motorised ball feed rotor (9) into the pressure chamber. The rotor agitates the balls in the hopper and allows them to fall by gravity into any of the six rotor compartments (10). The compartment is so designed as to permit only one ball at a time to occupy it. The compartments are arranged such, that plastic rotor plugs (11) can be inserted into the upper opening to prevent the entry of a ball. In this manner, the ball feed rotor can be programmed to set intervals, dependant upon the pattern of the compartments remaining open to the balls. The rotor carries each ball that occupies a compartment around the floor of the hopper and into the pressure chamber. The ball enters the chamber via a hinged or pivoted flap (12) situated below the rotor. Air entering the chamber from this blower motor tends to keep the flap lightly closed. The falling ball overcomes this slight resistance on the flap and passes into the chamber. The flap immediately closes and the air now pushes the ball through the flexible hose (7) and into the rubber restrictor (4). The rubber restrictor holds the ball until sufficient pressure has built up on the chamber. Once the pressure has been attained, the air forces the ball through the rubber restrictor and along the barrel (3). Opening the slots of the velocity control (5) allows air to escape and the ball velocity is slower, closing the control gives maximum speed. The electrical system incorporates a fixed power lead and a plug. A switch with an indicator light is provided. The blower motor emits an obvious audible sound when in operation. When this switch is in the off position, no electrical circuits function. Height setting (6) and velocity control (5) The barrel can be set and held by a friction lock hand knob to give level or high shots. The velocity control can be set for high or low ball speed slide it up or down the barrel and observe it s effect. These two controls used together will give you a variety of shots high, low, short or deep whatever the particular need. The friction lock pivot bolts (15) will need to be tightened occasionally to maintain just sufficient hold for the barrel. Do not over tighten or undue strain will be imposed on the mechanical parts.

- 5 - Rubber Restrictor (4) This holds the ball until sufficient pressure forces the ball through and shoots it along the barrel. If a very gentle shot for small children is required, simply remove the restrictor from the base of the barrel by releasing the clamp, firmly and slowly twist and pull the barrel from its position. The restrictor can be pulled out by gripping the rubber. If a sudden decrease in velocity is noticed after prolonged use, check the restrictor for any defects, like holes, splits or general weakness. Replace if necessary. Ball Feed The rotor has six compartments. Each compartment will feed a ball once every 2,5 seconds with all compartments open. Various patterns of rotor plugs will provide different ball intervals. Spin Bend The spin bend (13) is clamped firmly on to the end of the barrel, giving forehand shots. Pointing bend up or down will give top spin or back spin. Pointing bend left or right will give slice to left or right. Serving (tennis) or bowling (cricket) extension assembly detail (14) This feature can be used in conjunction with all other features. To assemble, remove barrel from machine and insert tubes, ensuring joints are firm and tighten clamps. Insert and clamp barrel in end of curved tube. Attach supports on to adjusting bracket and in sockets situated in ball hopper. Pull securing ring on sockets to highest position to prevent the ball joint from becoming detached. Adjust the angle of the upright tube and lock in position with the black rubber rings. Should it be required to vary the angle of the upright tube between shots, push rubber rings out of the way and raise the lower upright tube by hand as required the collar being free to slide up and down.

- 8 - ELECTRICAL DATA The Kanon requires a nominal 220v or 240v maximum single-phase 50 Hz AC supply during normal operating conditions and draws approximately 5 amperes. The Kanon is fitted with a 2 metre cable and plug that has integral earthing facilities. The earth continuity of extension cable and the supply point must be in good order in the interests of safety. When using an extension lead to supply power to the machine, ensure that the cable size is as shown in the table. EXTENSION CABLE LENGTH CABLE SIZE VOLT DROP AT 5 AMPS mm mm mm mm Under extreme conditions of long cable lengths, ensure that thevoltage at the machine when the machineis operating ismaintained at not lower than 220 volts. Ifthis condition cannot be achieved, consult an electrician. If the supply cord is damaged itmust be replaced by the manufacturer or its service agent or a similarly qualified person in order to avoid a hazard. 9 - 9 - CRICKET HOW TO SET MACHINE UP FOR EACH SKILL AS SHOWN ON VIDEO 1. REVERSE CHAINING The Kanon should only have one tube attached to the machine, that being the one with the restrictor attached. This will allow a low bounce delivery to be hit consistently even if the length of the ball varies slightly (all caplugs can be removed). Back foot strokes will need the bowling simulator tubes to be attached to give the necessary bounce required (three caplugs should be in place). 2. DRIVE FROM STANCE This drill can be set up with or without the bowling simulator tubes. It all depends on the ability and age of players. The younger players can have difficulties in working out which length of ball should be defended. Therefore when practising the technical requirements of the drive, it is important that the ball is struck just off the ground. Therefore no height is required (three caplugs should be in place) 3. PULL SHOT The bowling simulator will be required for this as plenty of bounce is needed. If the pace on the ball is insufficient, then bring the machine closer to the player. The reaction time will be reduced simulating a faster delivery (four caplugs should be in place). 4. CUTSHOT The set up is the same as the PULL SHOT, just angled across to the off side of the player. 5. MOVING OUT TO DRIVE On this drill the bowling simulator again will be required, with the main vertical tube directly vertical if not slightly away from the player. The speed regulator should be open to allow the ball to be delivered slower, which will enable the ball to be flighted. If coaching more than one person then all caplugs should be used. This will allow the players time to return to the crease prior to the next delivery. 6. SWEEP SHOP CHAINING OR BEGINNERS The machine should be brought to about 5 metres away from the player. With the normal barrel removed, the short plain accessory tube should be fitted in place of it angled at about 45 degrees, the ball should pop out gently as no restrictor is in place to build up pressure (four caplugs to be used unless reverse chaining, where three can be used). 7. HIGH CATCHING Angle barrel upwards. Close speed regulator, add plain tube for maximum height (three caplugs to be used).

SKIM CATCHING As for HIGH CATCHING, only lower angle so the ball is fired around chest height at players standing about metres away. 9. AGILITY FIELDING DRILLS As for SKIM CATCHING but the drive arm is put off centre to enable the tube to sway (no caplugs required). 10. CLOSE CATCHING By using only the normal barrel connected to the Kanon, place a cricket bat across the top of the Kanon. With no caplugs, the bat can be used to deflect the ball to the awaiting catchers every couple of seconds. 11. ONE HANDED INTERCEPT AND SHORT RETRIEVE As for the SWEEP SHOT REVERSE CHAINING, except that the short plain tube should be used in place of the normal barrel e.g. no restrictor. The tube should be horizontal allowing the ball to be sent out along the floor for the player to retrieve. As the player reaches the ball it should be thrown back to their partner with a bounce delivery who will be standing next to the machine. With the machine set up with three caplugs, another ball will be released where the fielder can now run in and attack this ball with an under arm throw, again back to their partner. If the ball does not run far enough away from the machine before the fielder gathers the ball, then the starting point for the fielder must be adjusted by moving it backwards, increasing the distance to run. 12. CIRCUIT TRAINING The drill of No. 11 can be used. After the skill is completed once, it will be the partner s turn and so on. A batting drill can also be done. Adapting pipes should be used to simulate a bowler and the level of fitness of the players will determine how far they should run down the wicket before returning to the batting crease ready for the next delivery (three caplugs should be used). GAMES 1. GAME FOR THE FRONT FOOT DRIVE ROUNDERS CRICKET Divide the group into two. One team fields and the other bats. Make sure all batters have a bat each of the correct size. On the first batter playing a stroke at the ball they must run to first base. This base is normally a safe distance away from the striking area and parallel to where the batting line is waiting. The next batter moves into position in front of the batting stumps and takes the next delivery. That person must then run to where the first batter is who in turn must return to home, line up behind the team for his turn again. They continue until their allotted time is up (e.g. 8 minutes per side). Each time a batter is out (bowled, caught or run out) 5 runs are deducted. However the player continues in the game. Set zones out so more runs can be scored if the ball goes into that zone (e.g. zone 1 5 runs, zone 2-10 runs, zone 3-20 runs and so on).

Set the machine so it delivers a fullish delivery, capable of being driven. Depending on the ability of the group either use the bowling simulator (advanced) or only the normal barrel on (beginners). This method will allow a double bounce feed giving the player more time and chance of striking the ball. Set the machine so all of the caplugs are removed and use just one ball. The fielding side must return the ball to the coach who places the ball back into the machine for a perfect feed every time. This method is good for games in restricted areas when safety is paramount. 2. PULL SHOT Using the bowling simulator set the machine for a short pitch delivery. Again divide the team into two. If there are any left-handers put them on the same side. This will allow the fielding side to be split on both sides of the wicket. When the fielders are in place (remember a safe distance from the hitting area) one batter starts off at the striker s end, with the rest of the batting team lined up to the right of the machine. With four caplugs in place and the coach position so the fielding side can return the ball to him, let the game begin. The object is for the striker to attempt to pull the ball. Whether successful or not they must run down the wicket towards the machine running on the offside and joining the back of the batting line. The first batter in the line must run to the striker s end and be ready to strike the ball in about 6-7 seconds and so on. Rules are the same for his game. However, as the machine has 50 balls in it no fielder is allowed into the safety zone to field the ball. These balls will stay in place unless it could be dangerous to the batters running, in which case the machine is switched off and the area is cleared before resuming play. This is not normally the case as this game is quite advanced and the players are quite efficient at playing the stroke. 3. CUT SHOT (Same as 2) 4. CONTINUOUS CRICKET This is a fun game and anything goes. The machine is set up with the normal barrel in place, 50 balls in the hopper and only 3 caplugs. The game is set up as follows. One set of stumps with two coloured cones set about 5-8 metres behind the stumps at a slight angle. The object is for the batter whether they hit the ball or not, must turn and run behind them going around one of the cones before returning to his original position. Obviously, the machine will feed another ball in approximately 5 seconds. The player must try and strike the next ball before repeating the execise. This game can be used to push players aerobically. Rules can be on a time limit per player (e.g. 3 minutes per player, runs scored as per other games, wickets lost 5 runs deducted or if you are out you are out and the next player takes over or 3 outs and you are out)
