1 Wet Net Gazette Volume XXXIII Issue 7/8 Summer Club Calendar General Meetings General meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month in the basement of the First Presbyterian Church, 8th and Monroe in Corvallis. Social at 7 PM, meeting at 7:30 PM. We don t meet during the summer, nor have a regular meeting in January. Board Meeting Board meetings are usually held on the first Tuesday of the month. Next MWFF Meeting October 11 (no September meeting since many of us will be fishing) Contents Fishing Reports Fall Rogue River Trip July/August 2016 Tight Lines We re already into August. Fortunately, the weather has been much more temperate than Word is that the Willamette steelhead run is a near record. I m hoping to get out and swing some streamers for them soon. Maybe this time will be the one. Our East Lake trip is this coming weekend. Weather looks to be good and hopefully the fishing will be too. Duane Higley s comprehensive write up was circulated previously and should be here in the newsletter somewhere. If you go please remember that we hold a potluck Saturday afternoon. It s always a good time. I hope to see you there. If you have any questions, please contact Duane. In September we will have our first club trip to the Rogue River. Cindy Shaw will be leading the trip for half-pounder steelhead. Information was included in the last newsletter. We ll resume monthly meetings in October. That s all for now. Hope your summer has been fine. Steve Stratton Thanks Ron Perry for a great summer picnic
2 Fishing Reports Wild Cutthroats on the Middle Fork of the Salmon Dan Bean, his daughter Anne, my wife Judy, and I spent a fantastic week floating the 100-mile stretch of the wild and scenic Middle Fork of the Salmon. The trip far exceeded my expectations and I definitely plan on going again. The scenery, fishing, clear water, the many rapids, and the great food all made it an incredible trip. The MF of the Salmon is one of the premiere rafting rivers in the West so getting a draw from the lottery system to get on the river is difficult. After failing to get a draw over a number of years I decided to hitch a ride with Solitude River Trips owned by Willi Cannell, that caters to fly fishermen. Willi runs a very professional well organized trip. There were 21 clients, ½ paddlers and ½ fishermen. The fishermen paired up in boats each with a guide to float and fish for the day. We put in at 5800 ft elevation surrounded by spruce and lodgepole pine and took out at 3000 ft surround by Douglas-fir and ponderosa pine. The fishing was fantastic. My wife said she would only fish a little but ended up casting from morning until we reached camp late in the day. I used my 7 ½ ft 3-4 wt bamboo rod which was ideal. The majority of the cuts ranged between with the occasional 14. Although Dan and I saw very little surface activity we fished big dry flies (e.g. various stone fly patterns) and the fish slammed them all day, often coming up from depths of over 10-ft. For most fly fishermen the ultimate is taking fish on the surface. This was a double plus. With the water so clear and being well elevated standing in the rafts, you would often see the fish coming, often very casually in the deep pools, to take your fly. It was hard to be patient and not pull the fly out of their mouth before they turned. Another joy was the target casting in seams and eddies as the boats quickly passed by. With the river dropping an average of 30 ft/mile the river was really moving. The entire trip was a joy, and Anne who did not fish, very much enjoyed paddling the many rapids with an experienced guide. This winter I will be doing a presentation on our trip. I would highly recommend it, both for fishing and wilderness experience and Willi Cannell s outfit, Solitude@rivertrips.com. Rick Miller

4 Linton Lake I slipped my float tube into Linton Lake on the old McKenzie Highway last Thursday. It is a beautiful spot, being a glacial cirque dammed by a lava flow. It was a clear day with light breeze and you could hear the roar of the waterfalls above the lake as you crossed the small ridge approaching the lake. Linton has no outlet stream and the lava dam drinks the outflow. Air temperature was mostly in the 70's. The water temp ranged from 55 degrees near the inlet streams to 64 degrees in the shallower bays. Mostly in the high 50's though. Water clarity was excellent with at least 15-ft visibility. I wasted time with seal buggers, when I should have been paying attention to the rare rises in very shallow water. These were within a few feet of the bank and I initially wrote them off as small fish. When I finally gave up my sink tip and changed to a dry line and a Royal Wulff, the first cast caught a fat 12-inch brown about a foot from the bank. There were only a few more minutes of shade next to the shore, but other similar browns cooperated until the sun hit. After that things were slower and I went back to a sink tip and caught the occasional 10" Brookie fairly deep (6 ft?). There were very few rises during the day and did not fall into a pattern. Mid-afternoon there were phenomenal swarms of grey mayflies, but absolutely no surface activity by the fish. Linton Lake is worth the walk whether or not you catch fish. I only landed about six fish, but had a great day. Dan Bean Litton Lake, center of photo
5 Fishing for Pinks in Sitka Alaska My daughter lives Sitka Alaska, where my son s family and Judy and I visited in late July. During our stay, my daughter, son, grandson, and I headed for the jetty where the pinks were hanging out getting ready to head up Indian Creed about a ½ mile away. The Pink-Possum fly proved very effective in attracting a grab. Although pinks are not known for their meat (frequently the salmon that comes in a can) they definitely are good fighters, a handful for a 7 or 8 wt rod. Photos are: back side of the jetty looking at part of the Sitka fishing fleet, my son on the bay side of the jetty searching for pinks, my son with a nice female, and a shot of my grandson with his hands very full and my daughter getting ready to land the fish, & the Pink Possum. The last photo 42 king, I wish I could say I caught on a fly rod but that would be a lie. We did do a day on a charter picking up kings and silvers. Rick Miller
