We are looking for a few good men and women. If you are interested in helping decide who our presenters are and where we go for our outings, please join us. Or, if you just want to find out what goes on during the board meetings or want to share your opinion; please join us. No experience needed, just your interest in fly fishing is all it takes to be a board member. February 18 Devils Lake Outing Come and join us when we fish Devils Lake near Lincoln City on February 18. Devils Lake has a fair population of resident cutthroats as well as holdover rainbows, both of which can be nice size, and possibly some smolts. A floating device of some kind is best although one may fish from the boat dock. To get there, drive Highway 22 west, merge onto Highway 18 near Willamina and drive west to Highway 101, turn left (south) onto Highway 101 for about a mile, turn left onto East Devils Lake Road, and drive about 3 miles to the East Devils Lake boat launch on your right. Since the southbound boat ramp sign may not be there, watch for the back of the State Park sign on the left. It is located about a mile north of the factory outlet stores. For those interested, we will carpool/caravan from the West Salem Safeway leaving at 7:30. Suggested gear is 4-6 weight rods with either floating or intermediate line, since the lake is fairly shallow. Flies include woolly buggers or leeches in green, black, or brown, soft hackles, possie buggers, and chironomids. The club will provide a lunch entrée around noon so bring a small side dish to share if you wish. It's Time to Renew Your Santiam Flycasters Membership If you haven t done so already, this is an excellent time to renew your Santiam Flycasters membership for Membership expired on December 31. Featuring the Santiam Flycasters logo, the caps come in two colors, tan and sage. The price remains a low $ Pick one up at any of the upcoming monthly meetings. They make an excellent gift.

3 Page 3 Fly Pattern Should Always be the Last Thing You Change (from an online article by George C. Costa. See below for link to the full article) When fish are actively rising and your fly has gone over them 4-5 times, change it up. Actively feeding fish will generally rise to a fly if you ve got the right size and presentation. As with nymphing, look to adjust size before pattern, but if the takes still don t come, don t waste your time pounding the water with a dud, odds are you ll spook the fish and put them down before you hook them. More often than not the fish are eating the hatch you re not seeing, aka the hidden hatch. There may be size 8 Drakes all over the place, but I d bet the ranch they re eating the size 16 sulphers you re ignoring. The best anglers can catch fish on flies that look like cat puke. Fishing correctly will always produce more results than fishing the correct fly. Focus on the other aspects of your angling and make adjustments to your rig or fly size before you lose confidence in your pattern. Pattern can play an integral part in determining your angling success, just remember that it should be the last thing you adjust on the water. Outing Report January 28 Wi-Ne-Ma Lake We had about 15 club members travel to the Coast for the first outing of the new year. The day was a welcome reprieve from the rough January weather experienced so far. Overcast skies with the sun occasionally peaking through and calm winds made it a nice day to get out the pontoon boats, open the fly box, and get out on the water. A number in the group reported catching and releasing ten or more of the feisty cutthroat trout that inhabit Wi-Ne-Ma Lake. We call them feisty as most were in the 8-10 inch range. However, one was reported at stretching the tape at 13 inches. The most action seemed to occur in the first hour on the water, then things cooled off with only occasional strikes. A welcome and warming lunch of chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, and green beans pulled us off the water at noon and turned in a wonderful time to visit, make plans, and tell tales. Thank you Jean Shepherd of Wi-Ne-Ma Christian Camp. All in all, 2017 is starting off well for the Santiam Flycasters. Hope to see you all on February 18 as we go down the coast a bit and sample Devil s Lake for our February Outing. articles/fly-pattern-shouldalways-be-last-thing-youchange/

5 Page 5 Welcome these New Members in January John Ross, Salem George Hingston, Salem Welcome to the Club! Santiam Flycasters on Television! Bill Cruscial, SFC club member has started to film his 3rd episode of "The Fly Tying Show for Capitol Community Television in Salem, Oregon. Bill is retired, but taught for 36 years at the schools for the Deaf in Idaho and Oregon. He last taught Video Production at the Oregon School for the Deaf as a certified CTE (Career and Technical Education) teacher. Now that he is retired he is fulfilling one of his dreams, a TV series on fly tying. In the first and second episodes he featured two fly tyers from the club, Tim Johnson and Ken Karnosh along with Mitch Smith from the Two Rivers Fly Shop in Albany. That format worked so well that each episode will include a tyer from a local fly shop and two tyers in studio. Jay Nicholas of the Caddis Fly Shop Featured in the Next Episode This third episode includes Jay Nicholas from the Caddis Fly Shop in Eugene tying two steelhead tube flies. Later in the month James Ferguson from the SFC has agreed to come into the studio and tie two different patterns for the show. The episodes can be found on CCTV Channel 22 via the local cable or on Bill s YouTube channel
