1 NEWS of the LEPIDOPTERISTS' SOCIETY Number 5 15 September, 1971 Editorial Committee of the NEWS.... EDITOR: Dr. Charles V. Covell Jr., Dept. of Biology, Univ. of Louisville, Louisville, Ky., USA, ASSOC. EDITOR: Dr. Paul A. Opler, Div. of Entomology, 201 Wellman Hall, Univ. of California, Berkeley, California, USA, J. Donald Eff Thomas C. Emmel H. A. Freeman L. Paul Grey Richard Heitzman John Heath G. Hesselbarth Robert L. Langston Lloyd M. Martin F. Bryant Mather E. J. Newcomer K. W. Philip F. W. Preston G. W. Rawson E. C. Welling M. R. S. Wilkinson PRESIDENTIAL PROFILE Beginning this year the NEWS will publish biographical data on our current Society president. It is fitting that we begin this series with Charles Lee Remington who, besides being the 1971 President, is a co-founder of the Lepidopterists' Society and was for 17 years the Editor of the Lepidopterists' News and its successor, the Journal. Charles was fortunate to be the son of an entomologist, the eminent P. Sheldon Remington, and began collecting at an early age. When only 10 he accompanied his father on an expedition to collect in the Rockies and Cascades. Born in Reedville, Virginia, in 1922, he spent much of his growing-up years in the St. Louis area, with rich summers in Michigan, Colorado, and Massachusetts. In 1943 he completed a bachelor's degree at Principia College in Illinois, where he made a faunal study of the terrestrial arthropods of Jersey County (unpublished). As an Army medical entomologist from 1943 to 1946, he combined malaria survey work with Lepidoptera collecting and rearing in Louisiana, New Caledonia, Leyte, and Japan. In 1946 he married Jeanne Ehrenborg. They have three children: Eric, Janna, and Sheldon. Charles Lee Remington During the years 1946 to 1948 Charles was a graduate student at Harvard. It was here that he and Harry Clench founded the Society, and published the first Lepidopterists' News with Jeanne typing the stencils. More on this subject will be included in the 25th Anniversary Issue next summer. --:-..- Upon the completion of his Ph.D. in 1948, Charles accepted a position on the Zoology faculty at Yale University, and has been there ever since. He began genetical and evolutionary studies of Colias, and later extended his experimental work to Limenitis, Papilio and other groups of Nearctic Lepidoptera. Research specialities have since broadened to include genetics of polymorphic and aberrational forms; interspecific hybridization; mimicry; population size, movement and diurnal rhythms (with use of mark-release-recovery techniques); larval and adult biology in the field; karyology; larval and pupal taxonomy and morphology; industrial melanism; sexual behavior; and migration. Working with him have been many outstanding research associates, graduate students, and undergraduates in honors programs - some of them productive members of the Society. His many publications can be found in our Journal, Entomological News, Psyche, Annual Review of Entomology, and other journals. In the mid-fifties he established the Entomology Section of the Peabody Museum at Vale, and it has grown and thrived ever since. Field studies have been largely based at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Colorado, on Sant Cruz Island off California, and in New England.

2 Besides his leading role in the Society, in which he was elected Honorary Life Member in 1966, "c. L." has been an active teacher at Yale in such areas as population biology, evolution, entomology, and environment. He was a Guggenheim Fellow at Oxford University in , and has been an active member of such societies as Sigma Xi, Royal Entomological Society of London, Finnish Entomological Society, Society for the Study of Evolution, Genetics Society of America, Ecological Society of America, and others. He has taken a leading part in human population concerns, and is Vice President of Zero Population Growth, Inc., as well as a member of the Board of Directors of the Council on Population and Environment. We honor President Remington for his great service to lepidopterology, through research, encouragement of others, and his tireless service to the Society. We look forward to more of the same in the coming years. NEWS AND NOTES: -CVC Beginning with the first number of Volume 26 of the Journal, page charges for those with funds available for the purpose will be charged at the rate of $23.33 per page. Remember that NO ONE WILL BE ASKED TO PAY PAGE CHARGES FROM PERSONAL FUNDS. Also, no dues increases are planned in the near future. I am still getting complaints from members who have not been paid or otherwise recompensed for transactions with other members. Some, who collect as their means of support, depend heavily on our reliability. If the shoe fits, please put it on! Professor Ernst J. Dornfeld and John Hinchliff have prepared a mimeographed CHECK LIST OF OREGON RHOPALOCERA witp county records and flight periods (1971). About 25 years of collecting is represented. Prof. Dornfeld will send copies to members upon request while supply lasts, after which $.50 per copy must be charged for duplicating more copies. Write: Prof. E. J. Dornfeld, Dept. of Zoology, Oregon State University, Corvallis, ORE , U.S.A. Roy O. Kendall (NEW ADDRESS: Rt. 4, Box 104-EB, San Antonio, TEXAS 78228, U.S.A.) urgently requests that SOCIETY OFFICERS, PAST AND PRESENT, immediately send him the information listed on pp. 3 and 4 of the 1971 NEWS, No.2, for inclusion in the 25th Anniversary Commemorative Issue. We are informed by Rod Irwin that Mr. Alex K. Wyatt of Chicago, charter member of the Lepidopterists' Society, died at his home on May 14, 1971, at the age of 92. Mr. Wyatt was for many years a Research Associate at the Field Museum, where he specialized in Noctuidae. A biographical obituary will appear later in the Journal. MI LLIONS OF BUTTERFLIES? Newspaper articles sent in by Ray Bracher and Richard Guppy tell of huge clouds of butterflies in the vicinity of Mt. Shasta, California, clogging car radiators and making highways slippery. Both articles are dated Aug. 13. Species mentioned as comprising these swarms are "monarchs, regal fritillaries, queens, buckeyes, red admirals, American coppers, and common wood nymphs." Another article by Dick West was sent by R. B. Dominick from the Charleston Evening Post, regarding "what appears to be a rather ominous buildup of butterflies." He does not, however, say where, what species, or how many he is talking about. Can any of you give us some precise information on this subject? 1972 ANNUAL MEETING. Roy O. Kendall informs us that the Twenty-fifth Anniversary Meeting of the Society will be held at Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas, from June 22 to 26, Dormitory accommodations will be available. More information will appear in the NEWS later. PLAN NOW TO ATTEND. IMPORTANT FOR IMPORTERS of lepidopterous livestock. A large proportion of the insect pests (as well as plants, snails, walking catfish, etc.) in the U.S. are imported from other parts of the world. The U. S. Department of Agriculture will issue permits for importation under certain criteria, about which you should know before accepting living material from abroad. All this is explained concisely in a brief brochure, "Issuing Permits for the Movement of Plant Pests, Pathogens, and Vectors" (PA-967, Agricultural Research Service, U. S. Department of Agriculture, Feb., 1971). The pamphlet is available for 10 cents from: Supt. of Documents, U. S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C , U.S.A. DEALERS PLEASE NOTE: We plan to include next year in the NEWS a brief directory of dealers in four categories: (1) equipment and materials; (2) entomological literature (current and antiquarian); (3) living Lepidoptera; and (4) specimens of Lepidoptera. If you wish to be included, send to the Editor before January 1,1972, pertinent general information, such as: name, address, types of materials you offer, availability -2-

3 of catalogs (price if such is required). PLEASE MAKE AN ENTRY ONLY IF YOU PLAN TO CONTINUE YOUR DEALERSHIP ON A REGULAR BASIS. HELLSTROM CHRONICLE is a current motion picture well worth your viewing. Despite some rather ludicrous preaching about insects inheriting the earth (a question which one need hardly beg), the film includes the most spectacular action color photography of insects I have yet seen. It is an entomology course in a nutshell, with some good footage of Lepidoptera as well as many other fascinating insects and spiders. DOWNEY COLLECTION OF IMMATURE LEPIDOPTERA TO ALLYN MUSEUM OF ENTOMOLOGY -CVC The fine collection of immature Lepidoptera, particularly Lycaenidae, assembled by Dr. John C. Downey, University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa, has been donated to the Allyn Museum of Entomology, Sarasota, Florida. This collection contains more than a thousand examples of early stages of butterflies and is the collection upon which Dr. Downey's important works of immature Lycaenidae were based. The Downey collection forms the nucleus of a collection of immature Lepidoptera being established by the Allyn Museum. At present only identified material is solicited, and it is projected that as sufficient material becomes available on the early stages of various groups, the Allyn Museum will publish keys to the identification of the preparatory stages. Inasmuch as the emphasis of the adult collection of the Allyn Museum is on Rhopalocera and a few selected groups of "Macros," these will be the groups on which the immature collection will be concentrated. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: - Lee D. Miller, Allyn Museum of Entomology, Sarasota, Fla. Dear Editor: In reply to Mr. Dimock: (1) He asks for "real Latin names." I suggest that "Harkenclenus" is just as "real" as many of the names attributable to Linnaeus or Fabricius. (2) The rules about names are in the INTERNATIONAL CODE OF ZOOLOGICAL NOMENCLATURE; so as long as these rules are followed, the actual name selected should be strictly the author's choice. If he wants to name a creature for his wife, his friend, his home town, his congressman, or because it has four spots or eats oak leaves, that is his business. (3) So far people have named four species matheri. This has encouraged my perseverance in the pursuit of entomology and caused me to think even more highly of them. In response to Dr. Rawson's appeal for anecdotes, the one I remember most vividly took place one night when I was collecting moths in the doorway of a jewelry store in Gulfport, Mississippi, and a couple of teenagers stopped to watch. A Plusia I reached for got away, and I didn't pursue it because I saw something else I preferred. One of the kids chased the Plusia, crushed it in his fist, and presented it to me. I declined, observing that it wan't worth much mashed. To which he replied, "It wasn't worth a to begin with!" I had no ready answer, and since then accept all proffered specimens. Sargent has been approved by the Executive Council (mail ballot) as Editor of the Journal, effective 1 January, As you may know, Dr. Hardwick has had to resign due to increased demands and responsibilities in his job. Dr. Sargent is a member of the Zoology faculty at the Univ. of Massachusetts, Amherst. We are grateful to Dr. Hardwick for his fine service to the Society, and congratulate Dr. Sargent upon his appointment. -CVC DID YOU KNOW THAT - insects generally fly upward into a net or bottle - a practice that can be capitalized on by the collector. white Polyporous shelf fungus can be cut into small rectangles for use in making double mounts when pinning tiny Lepidoptera and other insects. Order Lepidoptera is divided into two suborders: Jugatae (primitive moths with fore and hind wings similar in shape and venation) and Frenatae (moths with frenulum, and butterflies; forewing differs from hindwing). In the Jugatae mouthparts are chewing or rudimentary in the adult. The great pianist, Walter Gieseking ( ), was an amateur lepidopterist. About 15% of the membership in the Lepidopterists' Society live in California. The three largest families of Lepidoptera are, in descending order: Noctuidae, Geometridae, and Pyralidae.
