We each took turns preparing some amazing meals under the COF canopy. There was quite a bit of light rain, a full moon and variable weather but that didn t stop us from catching fish. Daryl and Nan Loveland caught 26 and 20 rainbows respectively on Dairy Lake, Daryl caught nine lunkers on Tunkwa Lake and Lee Ann caught a 23 incher on Morgan Lake. Katheleen Schroeder put us all to shame on Six Mile Lake hauling in a dozen. Debbie Norton and Jill Bazemore both nailed some fish and had time to tweak their pontoon boats. Pete Hawkins christened a new boat. Wayne Wright of Logan Lake again provided the club some invaluable assistance. Hermann Fischer from Kamloops came over and gave us a fly tying demo one evening. He has a fantastic new material to make dragon fly bodies out of. I will bring the material to the July meeting and you are all welcome to take as much as you like. Outings: We will schedule more outings for the rest of the season. If there is somewhere you would like to go on an outing, please let us know. Contact outings@ coflyfishers.org. Fly Box Organization: Karen Kreft found this wonderful link to an article giving various strategies for organizing your fly box. Check it out! Warm Springs Tribal Permit: Just a note of caution, if you fish the Warm Springs to Trout Creek section of the lower Deschutes and you want to fish on the tribal side, you need a tribal permit. You need to carry that permit ON YOUR PERSON or you risk getting a $500 fine. ~Lee Ann Ross CONSERVING RESTORING EDUCATING

2 GENERAL MEETING GENERAL MEETING: JULY 20 7:00 PM GENERAL MEETING BEND SENIOR CENTER, 1600 SE REED MARKET ROAD, BEND An angler can t know too much about bugs. This month COF has the pleasure of learning all there is to know about bugs from Rick Hafele. His program is titled: DE-BUGGING ENTOMOLOGY: ENTO- MOLOGY DOES NOT HAVE TO BE CONFUSING OR A BIG MYSTERY. In this slide show you will learn what kind of entomology information is useful to a fly fisher and how to apply it successfully to your fishing. w Rick Hafele has a Master s degree in aquatic entomology and a minor in fisheries biology, and has worked as a professional aquatic biologist for over 30 years. Few fly fishers have Rick s knowledge about the world in which trout live, and for many years, he has been sharing that knowledge with fly fishers through books, articles, slide shows and seminars. w Books to his credit include: An Angler s Guide to Aquatic Insects and Their Imitations (with Scott Roederer, Johnson Books, 1995), Western Mayfly Hatches (with Dave Hughes, Amato Pub, 2005), The Complete Book of Western Hatches (with Dave Hughes, Amato Pub, 1981), Nymph Fishing Rivers and Streams (Stackpole Books, 2006), and most recently the two volume set Tactics for Trout and Seasons for Trout (Stackpole Books, 2014) co-authored with Dave Hughes and Skip Morris. Rick is also well known for instructional DVD s that include the 1983 classic Anatomy of a Trout Stream and more recently the four volume set titled, Fly Fishing Large Western Rivers, plus Nymph Fishing Basics (included with his latest book or sold separately), Advanced Nymph Fishing and Advanced Tactics for Emergers & Dries. He also penned the Entomology column for American Angler magazine for over 30 years. More info about Rick and his programs can be found at his website: w Check the education session to learn about the clinic with Rick on Thursday, July 21 you won t want to miss out. Pre-Meeting : 6:00: Rick will teach us how to put together a simple insect collecting kit. EVENTS IFFF Fly Fishing Fair The International Federation of Fly Fishers (IFFF) has chosen Livingston to host its 51st annual Fly Fishing Fair later this summer. The exhibit hall is open to the public from August 4th through August 6th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. all three days. The Fair is the IFFF s flagship gathering. 4 CONSERVATION Update NUID Dam Fish Ladder As you may recall from prior columns, the North Unit Irrigation District dam in Bend is being retrofitted with a fish ladder. This dam is on the Deschutes just south of the Riverhouse. NUID was required to add the ladder, it was not a voluntary addition. Construction of footings and other modifications are scheduled to begin this month while the aluminum ladder is built off-site. The ladder should be operational by the end of the year. ODFW plans to monitor fish movement through the ladder. Crooked River Signs Following reports of anglers catching and potentially harvesting returning steelhead in the Crooked River below Bowman Dam, I approached ODFW and asked them to develop informational signage educating the public about anadromous fish reintroduction efforts. I also approached PGE and got them to pay for the effort. Twelve 26 x 36 signs will be installed in campground locations by the end of July. Crooked River Wetlands The City of Prineville has been working for years on an innovative project that will naturally process wastewater while creating a wetlands area that should benefit the Crooked River. Read more about it at: localstate/ /wetlands-coming-to-prineville. This project could return as much as 2 million gallons of water a day to the Crooked River in the area that needs it most: downstream of Prineville. The project that is now under construction and I have been invited to tour it. Let me know if you would like to go on the tour and we ll schedule a time for late July or August. PGE Fisheries Workshop The lower Deschutes has been the subject of extensive scientific analysis for decades. For over 20 years, Portland General Electric, the operators of the Pelton Round Butte hydroelectric project on the Deschutes near Madras, has held an annual fisheries workshop where the latest science is presented from PGE, ODFW, USFW, non-agency scientists, and others. I have been attending these meetings for a few years including the latest one June I have pages of notes, but below are some highlights. Contact me if you want more info on this. As reported in this column in much more detail earlier this year, the PGE funded R2 Study concluded that the lower Deschutes macroinvertebrates are very healthy. There is abundant food for salmonids. There is no detectable negative impact on macros from Selective Water Withdrawal operation, if anything macros are more abundant overall. Recent DEQ comments on this study are limited in scope and are being addressed. We will update you on the results of the DEQ inquiry when they are in. For the third year in a row, ODFW reported that lower Deschutes redband are in great shape, with no change post SWW. If anything, the fish are larger and healthier than pre SWW. Steelhead number s, wild and Deschutes hatchery origin, seem to be consistent pre and post SWW (within the range of natural and historical fluctuations). There has been a dramatic decline in the number of hatchery strays ( b-run fish) over the past few years in the lower Deschutes and other lower Columbia tributaries like the John Day. This has led to a lot of angler complaints. ODFW believes it is due to changes in how upper Columbia Continued on page 5 4 The Central Oregon Flyfisher J U L Y

5 Conservation continued from page 4 basin steelhead have been managed. In an attempt to increase survival rates, downstream migrating steelhead were barged from the upper Columbia basin around the dams and released close to the ocean for a number of years. Thus, these fish were not imprinted with the downstream journey. When they returned as adults they lacked a roadmap of how to get home and would stray into rivers searching for home. These fish are no longer barged and no longer stray into the Deschutes in large numbers. Creel surveys show that the majority of hatchery fish caught in the D in the past were stays (about 70%) rather than Deschutes origin. So, with fewer strays there is a lower hatchery catch rate overall. There have been record numbers of Fall Chinook returns over the past 5 years. This is due to the fact that they are mainstem spawners. The more natural warmer water temperatures in the spring post SWW have provided a dramatic benefit to these fish allowing them to grow faster and more successfully out migrate. The amount of fish released above PRB that are later captured in the SWW remains unacceptably low, far too low for a sustainable population. The latest study shows that many more fish make it down to Lake Billy Chinook (LBC) than are captured at the SWW. Most of the fish that enter LBC make it to the forebay (near the SWW), but do not enter the SWW. PGE tried an experiment with releasing water at night for two weeks, creating a strong flow into the SWW, and had good success capturing fish. The problem seems to be that the SWW flows are normally during the day when power generation is needed while fish want to migrate at night. PGE plans to try more nighttime releases this year. Smolts typically take 3-4 days to migrate out of the Deschutes after release below PRB. A new 3-year study of water quality is underway, with completion planned for The study will examine the middle Deschutes, Crooked, and Metolius rivers as they enter LBC, LBC itself, and the lower Deschutes. The lower D will be monitored at 12 sites from PRB to the mouth. Six major tributaries of the lower river will also be covered, from Shitike Creek to the White River. They also plan float trips to gather data. This study looks to be quite comprehensive and should provide some great science on water quality for the entire system. My takeaway from this meeting is that efforts to reintroduce anadromous fish above PRB continue to be quite worthwhile. Returns to date above PRB have been disappointing, but efforts continue to improve that. Higher returns appear to be possible in the not too distant future. The return of the river to a more natural temperature profile away from the artificially cold tailwater thermal profile of the past 50+ years has not harmed resident fish, it most likely has helped them, and has definitely improved fall Chinook returns. ~Yancy Lind, Conservation Chair, conservation@coflyfishers.org MEMBERSHIP Update Membership in COF is up to 340 active members as of the end of June. 6 EDUCATION Update We have had many educational classes so far this year from net and rod building, organizing your fly box, euro nymphing, and chironomid leader building and how to fish both Lava Lake and East Lake. In conjunction with our next club meeting July 20th and our meeting program given by Rick Hafele, our next classes will be great for those of you either newer to fly fishing or want a great refresher on identification of insect hatches and how to build a kit to use while fishing to help match your fly with natural hatches. We will also be offering a beginning two handed casting class in July. There is still room in both of those classes. If you have an idea for a class we should offer, please contact education@coflyfishers.org. We have many skilled and talented people in the club who are very generous with their time and knowledge to share those skills. We are also very fortunate to have the great Sponsors of the club and local Fly Fishing shops who are also able to provide the skills and information you are seeking. Ask to get on the local shops newsletter mailing list to keep up on their offerings. Look for our offering of upcoming sessions with no date yet: 1. How to trick out your pontoon boat. Safety items, anchors, oars, motors and batteries, secure your rod to the boat, types of boats etc. 2. Fishing the Crooked River since the river was flooded when we did the clean-up, we weren t able to fish, so we will try to have an on the water fishing demonstration. If you would like to share your skills with the club, teach something or have an idea for a session, please contact education@coflyfishers.org Western Hatches and Streamside workshop Presented by Rick Hafele: July 21, 2016 As a continuation of Rick Hafele s July program to the Central Oregon Flyfishers general meeting Wednesday night July 20th at the Bend Senior Center, Rick will also be offering a workshop the following day July 21, The workshop will be divided into two sessions, an AM session indoors with a slide/lecture program from 9-noon and a PM session on the water from 1-4pm on the Crooked River. In the AM session Rick will be discussing all aspects of identification of hatches and how to utilize this information for more successful fishing. There is no limit to number of participants. Fee for COF members will be $10/person for AM session. The afternoon session will include on the water habitat discussion and where and how to look for and collect insects. 7 NEXT CAST FLYFISHERS Update The Next Cast Flyfishers program provides opportunities and coordinates activities for young fly anglers in the area. We are able to provide fly fishing instruction through classroom activities, our fly fishing summer camp, ongoing COF events, and individually through mentorship and teaching. We hope that by providing these opportunities, young anglers will be exposed to fly fishing and increase their interest and level of involvement. 3-Day Fly Fishing Camp We did it! Our 3-Day camp was a huge success!! By the end of camp, each fly fisher was able to assemble their rod, tie on tippet and a fly, and perform perfect casts into Shevlin Pond! Plus, several fish were caught, including a couple of recently stocked trophy sized rainbows! For the fourth year, Next Cast Flyfishers has managed and operated a fly fishing camp for local middle school aged kids. The camp is coordinated through Bend Parks and Recreation, allowing the use of Shevlin Pond and Aspen Hall. Each year the camp has grown in popularity and continues to carry a waiting list for those that cannot get in. The recent purchases of additional rods from Redington and lanyards with fishing tools for the kids to use provide the opportunity for more practice while fishing. Becoming self-sufficient is a major goal of the camp. With tippet material, nippers, and a small fly box available on the lanyard, they were Above photos: 3-day fly fishing camp encouraged to tie their own knots and change flies when they wanted. Our donated funds also made it possible for use to include a selection of flies in each fly box that went home with the campers. In addition to fishing, the favorite activities are wading in Tumalo Creek to kick net for bugs and tying flies. Most of the kids have never worn waders and the concept of staying dry while walking in water is remarkable! Once they dive into the bugs, the chatter begins and bugs don t stand a chance! We (the instructors) also kick in the Deschutes River at Tumalo State Park to include some big stonefly nymphs in the mix! These big bugs always get a huge response! Several of the kids have attended camp in previous years and continue to expand their fly fishing skills and knowledge. We hope to encourage some of the new attendees to join us for other Next Cast activities, such as casting at the Old Mill, beginner fly tying (usually in November), fishing outings, and our annual BBQ and the December COF meeting. This year, a former camp attendee and Next Cast member, John Runco volunteered all three days and was a great help. He prepped equipment, and helped keep things organized, in addition to helping with fly fishing. John was a great addition to the team! 9 TYER S CORNER TLF Callibaetis Nymph T L F C A L L I B A E T I S N Y M P H It took a while for spring to finally get here, and it appears to be for real this time, so lets get on the water and throw some line. The fly this month started from the old Hares-Ear pattern. It has been modified to work better as a lake fly to represent the Callibaetis which I hear are starting to show up at some of the popular lakes we all fish. There are many great callibaetis patterns out there and we have featured them here in the past. It is fished off a floating line and long leader or it can be fished off a intermidate slow sinking line. The retrieve is slow and with short 2 inch pulls with pauses about every 3 to 4 pulls. This pattern can be tyed as a soft-hackle if you wish and just fish it in the top 18 inches of the water column as an emerger. Materials: Hook: #16 to # 12 wet/nymph hook 1x long and 1x heavy Daiichi 1560 Thread: Lt. dun or tan 14/0 Tail: Moose body 6 to 8 fibers, use lemon duck for another version Body: Natural Hares-ear dubbing with a little Tan UV ice dub mixed in Rib: Fine copper wire Thorax: Darker Hares ear with a little Tan UV ice dub mixed in Legs: Grey partridge (soft hackle) Head: Same as thorax Tying Instructions: 1. Lock in the thread about eye width from the eye and wind rearward laying down a thread base about half way down the hook shank. 2. Tye in the Moose Body tailing material, keeping it on top of the hooks, wrap to the barb of the hook, tail length should be about the hook gap. 3. Tye in the copper ribbing and wind the thread forward to the tye in point laying down a nice smooth base. Then take the thread back to the barb of the hook with long wraps. 4. Dub the Hares-Ear and wind forward forming a tapered body to the 2/3 point on the hook. Note: keep the body slim, as this has become a game changer in Callibaetis patterns. 5. Wind the copper rib forward in 4 to 5 even turns and tye off. 6. Dub the Darker Hares-Ear in the thorax area and tye off. 7. Prepare the Partridge Hackle feather for tying by cutting out the tip. Now with the V ed section pick out about 6 fibers pure side and tye in with 2 soft wraps and pull back to length, about hook gap, and tye off with tighter wraps. 8. Dub a small amount of the Dark Hares-Ear and wrap in to finish with a nice neat head. Good Luck and Good Hunting! ~Jerry Criss, , tlfly44@msn.com J U L Y The Central Oregon Flyfisher 9

Thank you to Mary Ann, Kathleen and Betty for leading groups of ladies in trying to organize what they had. We will have another session in the Fall or Winter. If you didn t make this one, definitely try to make the next session. Your messy fly box will thank you! COF will be holding their overnight East Lake trip in July. There are quite a few Wild Women attending. If you haven t signed up, please consider it or just come up for the day. If you have questions, please send Jill a note. We had a few wonderful volunteering opportunities in June and more will be coming. Wild Women helped out with the Next Cast youth fly fishing camp at Shevlin Park and also with the Forest Service High School Girls Camp on the upper Deschutes. Volunteering is a wonderful way to meet other members and also a great way to find out where to fish in central Oregon. Our club is a totally non profit, volunteer organization. We need your help! Please consider participating in one of the activities or perhaps one of our leadership positions. You don t need experience, just a willingness to learn! ~Kari Schoessler, wildwomen@coflyfishers.org OTHER NEWS USFS Girls in the Outdoors For the third year, the Wild Women and Next Cast Flyfishers joined forces to lead a fly fishing outing for local high school girls. This is the third year that the USFS has held a four day overnight camp in the National Forest to encourage high school girls to pursue careers in natural resources. As part of their recreation, we meet them on the Upper Deschutes and fly fish and collect some aquatic insects. It is a quick introduction to fly fishing, but they catch on quickly and get a few fish to rise to their flies! Once we put on waders, we march into the cold water and kick net for a variety of insects. Like other outings the big stoneflies win the day! Several of the girls (and a couple of counselors) plan to follow up and check out other Wild Women activities! We hope to see them again. Thank you to Kari Schoessler, Tina Perin, Delores Marsh, Betty Rentz, and Karen Kreft for helping with this outing! ~Karen Kreft 10 The Central Oregon Flyfisher J U L Y
