The Annual COF Banquet was held Saturday April 14th, at the River House Convention Center. Over 130 folks attended and enjoyed a great evening. A huge Thank You to Tom Wideman and his team for putting together such a great event. At the event, the club recognized Debbie Norton and Cliff Price as Fly-fishers of the year. We also recognized and thanked Charlie Schillinsky for his many fantastic hand made rods he has donated to the club over the years. Frank Turek was granted Lifetime Member Status for all of his contributions to the club over many years. Congratulations to all! As I mentioned at the banquet, the club needs someone to step up and take over leading this event for A substantial percentage of the clubs annual budget is a result of this event. This is a perfect way to make a difference not only to the club but also our entire Central Oregon Community. Kokanee Karnaval, Next Cast, Wild Women of the Water and all of our community outreach projects are funded by this event. The tasks involved could very well be shared among two or more folks. Several great outings are coming up soon, Check out the Club Calendar so you can make plans to attend one of these events. Thanks to all who participated in the Spring Clean-up of the Crooked River. Accolades are due to Pete Martin and his team for organizing this twice a year event. Thanks to everyone who help make this a great club. See you on the river. 2 GENERAL MEETING: MAY 16 7:00 P.M. GENERAL MEETING BEND SENIOR CENTER, 1600 S.E. REED MARKET ROAD, BEND Returning this May to speak to the club will be Craig Schuhmann, owner of Guided Waters Fly Fishing of Klamath Falls, who will give a presentation on Oregon s fabled Williamson River. Craig moved to Oregon with his family in The families move was partly to accommodate his father s passion for steelhead fishing on the waters of Oregon and Washington. When Craig was 10 years old he was initiated into his own passion for fly fishing with his father on the Owens River in California and again on the steelhead rivers in the Columbia Basin. He has managed to keep his fly rod working ever since. Taking interest in trout, he has spent numerous seasons living and fishing in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. Craig brings to play his interest in the totality of the sport through writing, fly tying, entomology, guiding, education, and conservation. As a guide, Craig, spends all of his time guiding on the Williamson and Wood rivers in Southern Oregon. Craig began his career in writing in 2006 and is the author of numerous books including Get Started in Fly Fishing and 40 Great American Trout Flies. In 2015, he was appointed editor of Fly Fishing and Tying Journal (Frank Amato Publication) Craig holds a Master of Art degree in Theology from the University of Portland and is the Director of Outreach for Integral Youth Services in Klamath Falls. 3 Long Hollow Ranch May 12 Long Hollow Ranch Rainbow Trout fly fishing is a great way to spend some relaxing time. Two of the ranch reservoirs are stocked with Rainbow trout and another has an abundance of primarily Large Mouth Bass. Here s an opportunity to fish a couple of private and local well stocked lakes. Fishing from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Limited to the first 10 responses. Access provided thru The Fly Fishers Place. Cost is $150 each person, please bring your lunch. Respond via to Ron to secure your spot. Only 2 spots left! RON KAYE RONKAYE@GMAIL.COM Lower Sac Outing May Just a 5 hour drive from Bend to Redding, California. That s where you ll find 50 miles of river with wild rainbows and fishing from the boat. Hire a guide or bring your drift boat and experience. Controlled water flows and a very temperate climate make the Lower Sac a blue ribbon fishery. We invite you to join leader Mike McClean on this COF outing. Logistics will be solidified based on the interest from the club members. The Best Western Hilltop is a nice and reasonable place to stay if you re not camping. It provides good meeting place for end of the day fish tales! This is a great way to meet fellow COF members and perhaps a future fishing buddy? Let s see if we can make these 2 days of fishing happen! - MIKE MCCLEAN MIKEBENDMCCLEAN@GMAIL.COM East Lake 2 Night Outing June 29-July 1 st This is the 3rd year for this outing that has grown to over 55 people enjoying this beautiful place so close to us. This is a multi-day campout at East Lake. The lake provides the perfect setting to fish from boat, float tube or the shoreline. Boats are available to rent at East Lake Resort. The lake supports rainbow trout, brown trout and kokanee salmon. It is an ideal setting for multiple types of fishing including streamer, nymphing (great chironomid water), the callibaetis emerger & dry fly, and top it off with terrestrials (ant. beetle, damsel). Go down into the cold depths or ply your fly along the weed beds and up close to the lake bank along the steep drop offs. Food: Breakfast, lunch, snacks, and beverages are bring your own. There will be a group meal for Friday Dinner at 5:30 and an early Saturday Dinner at 4:00. There will be a total fee of $10 to pay for the food & supplies. Main course, side dishes, salads, bread, & deserts, along with plates, bowls, and utensils will be provided. Volunteers will be needed to help with set up, cooking, and clean up for both dinners. The meals will be run out of my campsite. COF RSVP: Eric Steele steelefly2@msn.com Make check to COF for $10 and East Lake Outing on notation line. Mail to Eric Steele, Chestnut Place, Sisters, OR Education: Quiton Stanko has once again volunteered to present a how to for fly fishing East Lake. It will be 45min long & will take place prior to the June monthly mtg. at the Senior Center. More specifics to follow. Camping: Everyone is responsible for obtaining their own campsite. Each campsite is for up to 6 people and can facilitate one RV/trailer and a couple of tents. Partner up with a fellow COF flyfisher and we can maximize the number of people in close proximity to the COF activities. There are reserve & non-reserve sites in this area. In addition, East Lake Resort has cabins and an RV site with power & water hookups that are a very short drive away that enables you to join us around the meal table and the campfire ring. The COF Next Cast Youth Group needs two adjacent sites and I will need a centralized site for the Meals. We are asking that you leave campsites #27, 28, 29 & 30 for this purpose. Information on the campground: campgrounds/deschutes/bend-fortrock-district/newberry-caldera-area/cinder-hill/ Camp Site Reservation: Normally, the reservation system would be open for East Lake for our fish- M A Y The Central Oregon Flyfisher 3

4 ing trip. However, for 2018 it will be somewhat convoluted. From the HOODOO website - reservation restrictions are still in place for Cinder Hill campground as noted at the bottom of this page. I suspect it will be the end of May before we have any indication if and when the reservation system will open up for Cinder Hill camp ground. Attention: Campgrounds in Newberry Caldera will experience short term closures to allow for a tree removal project. Trees in campgrounds that are showing signs of future failure because of insect infestations or disease are being removed to improve visitor BONUS tlf capt. caddis worm safety and forest health. As a result, reservations will be opened for this campground in 2018 only after the trees have been removed. Sites are available on a first-come, firstserved basis outside of the closures. (I would guess at this point once the snow melts enough for them to go start work we will have an idea of their schedule. This will help estimate when the sites will be open for use and when reservation system will open for these sites) Day use areas such as boat ramps within the campground will also be closed concurrently. (I will keep track of this and will update) East Lake boat ramps not affected are Hot Springs Boat Launch and East Lake Resort. Stock up before you go! For those interested in what flies to use when Crappie fishing: The following work, flies #14 to #10 with white or yellow marabou or hackle tips and bodies of matching chenille. Jigging flies, small bright colored leeches or bait patterns. In the last few years a worm pattern I came up with has worked well. It is, 3 materials woven together with a 3 piece weave and tyed off on either end, and tyed to a heavy scud hook see picture and recipe. Thread: Black 8/0 to tye ends of worm and Brown Kevlar to tye to hook Hook: Heavy scud hook #12 Body: Brown/tan or brown/black chenille,.5mm clear/stretch beading cord, and micro chenille olive/gray. I weave together about 15 of this before tying on hook and cut into about 2 pieces, whip-finish both ends, then tye a piece to the hook. Be sure to seal the thread where you whip-finish the ends of the woven body, with head cement. - JERRY CRISS, TLFLY44@MSN.COM campgrounddetails.do?contract- Code=NRSO&parkId=72092 If you plan on staying at the East Lake Resort you should make your reservations now. - ERIC STEELE STEELEFLY2@MSN.COM Capt Caddis Crappie June 8-10 Come join in a weekend of fun, friendship, camping, and fishing for crappie in the upper end of Prineville Reservoir. What: A unique opportunity to seek the notorious crappie using fly rod techniques. When: Friday, June 8 to Sunday, June 10. If you can t camp, then just attend the main event. Who: Anyone interested in learning new tricks as well as honing old skills. Where: We will camp at Prineville Reservoir Resort. Betsy will be in space #19. Each campsite has water and electricity. There are nice restrooms and showers. There is a café serving breakfast and lunch. For reservations call Check out com for rates and directions. The also have a few motel rooms. The Main Event: We will meet at the Marina at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. This fishery can be approached with any water craft. You can catch fish right in front of the resort. The Marina rents boats and has launch facilities. Bring your hand held radio. 4 The Central Oregon Flyfisher M A Y

5 Flies: As for the fishing, the crappie are heavy insect feeders and are not fussy when it comes to fly patterns (sizes 10-12): Black Ant, Black Gnat, Light Cahill, Zug bugs, poppers, Hare s Ear, Mickey Finn, Wooly Worm, Wooly Bugger, anything bead head, anything with rubber legs. If it looks like a bug and moves like a bug, a crappie will grab it. Directions: From Prineville, take 3rd Street (Hwy 26) turn right on Combs Flat Road. Go one mile to to Juniper Canyon road. Turn right on Juniper Canyon road. Stay on it until it dead ends at the resort, about 18 miles. Interested? Contact Betsy. - BETSY MULLONG (541) British Columbia Trip June The club is considering hosting our annual lake fishing trip to the lakes in the Kamloops area of British Columbia. We have tentatively scheduled the trip for June 17 to 26, June 17 and 26 would be travel days with June for eight days of fishing. British Columbia offers an eight day non resident license. We will miss the June monthly meeting as we need to time the trip so that we are out of the camping area before the July 1 weekend which is the big Canada Day (think July 4th) vacation weekend. The club has a trailer with a full set of kitchen equipment, dining tents and tables. Breakfast and dinner cooking duties are shared by the participants with each person cooking a meal or two depending on how many folks come on the trip. Each person provides his or her own lunch. We will camp at Tunkwa Lake which is about a 12 hour drive straight up highway 97. If you are interested in this trip, please go to the COF website and read the two presentations on the trip which you can find under the newsletters/presentation button on the website. Please read all the information, as it should answer 95% of your questions. If you are interested in the trip and you can meet the conditions for participation laid out in the two documents, please send me an and I will put you on a list. LEE ANN ROSS ROSSLEEANN@YAHOO.COM NEXT CAST FLYFISHERS It s fishing time! Many of our members are hitting the local rivers and waiting for access to the lakes. We ran into Forrest on a local river chasing Bull Trout! He had a big smile on his face, so I think he found some. Forrest Franklin throwing a very large bunny leech on the Metolius. Three of the Next Cast Flyfishers members will be competing in the upcoming US Fly Fishing Championships, being held on the Upper Deschutes and nearby lakes. They have been traveling across the country to attend clinics and competitions in preparation. The Championships are May 31-June 1, & 2, and should have a lot of great fly fishing. The competitors are encouraged to share their tips and secrets with the monitors and other volunteers. Good luck to all of them! We are also ramping up a regular schedule for the Next Cast members. In April we met to tie flies, and will repeat this in May (see details below). As the weather warms, we will vary the schedule and meet at the Old Mill for casting practice or an aquatic insect session on the Deschutes River. Each month, the topic, instructors, and location may be different, so be sure to check this newsletter for the details. The sessions will be open to all of the Next Cast members and we encourage everyone to attend any and all the sessions you can! UPCOMING ACTIVITIES: MONTHLY NEXT CAST FLY- FISHERS MEET-UP MAY 18 FROM 3:30-5:30. Fly tying, Bend Environmental Center. Each month, we will schedule a meeting time prior to the COF monthly meeting (3rd Wednesday). The topic and location may vary, so check here each month to see details. We have vises and tools to borrow and we will provide materials. Please RSVP and let me know if you need equipment. Open to all Next Cast members. 3-DAY FLY FISHING CAMP JUNE 18, 19, & 20, 2018 SHEVLIN POND This camp is for all beginners and newer fly fishers (age 10-14), you don t have to be a Next Cast member to sign up! Camp is full! The Next Cast Flyfishers program provides opportunities and coordinates activities for young fly anglers in the area. We offer fly fishing instruction through classes and activities, fly fishing summer camps, ongoing COF events, and individually M A Y The Central Oregon Flyfisher 5

Be sure to get your knot on by checking this book out! Field & Stream Magazine called the first edition of this essential book: The longtime bible of knots and knot tying. New lines and leaders, new knots, and new nomenclature have finally required a completely new book - and this is the fully re-written and freshly illustrated successor. Graced with the exceptionally clear line illustrations by Rod Walinchus, made especially for this edition, this book is a must for all fishermen - fresh and saltwater, fly, bait, and spinning - who want the clearest possible instructions on how to tie all the essential knots that hold. Everything you need to know about fishing knots. The only thing this book will not do is practice tying knots for you. - -Sports Afield ~ If you are a club member and would like to peruse the library and/or check out one of our books, just look for the rolling bookcase at the club s general meeting. 8 TYER S CORNER ADULT BLACK BUZZER I know spring is just around the corner, it is just taking its time this year. It s a good thing because we have a low snow pack this year and we can use all the extra water we can get. With this in mind, there will be some low water issues later in the summer. So be aware; when the water warms up it is up to us to release fish properly, keeping them in the water, save the picture taking for some other time. The fly this month is one from the UK mag. Flyfishing and Flytying. I talk highly of this magizine as I believe it is one of the best out there. The fly is, Adult Black Buzzer, buzzer is their word for midge or Chironomidae. I have fished a fly like this one before and it does well for the early season midges. When fished just below the surface film it works well as an emerger. It also works well as the top dropper in a 3 fly buzzer rig on a dry line. And, if you have never tried fished midges/chironomidaes without a bobber/indicator, do so by casting 3/4 into the wind and letting the cast drift with the wind current, this presentation is more natural and the takes are a little different and it is more fun than the watching a indicator. Just keep the cast drifting with as little drag as possible by mending when needed. Materials: Hook: Curved scud hook #18 to # 12, Daiichi 1160 for example Thread: Black 14/0 Body: Black pheasant tail 3 to 5 fibers depending on hook size Rib: Peacock herl stripped, red or black Thorax: Black dry fly dubbing with a little tan UV ice dub mixed in Wing case: Black pheasant tail 5 to 6 fibers pulled over thorax Wing: Blue dun dry fly hackle tips Hackle: Badger or Lt. honey dun dry fly hackle Tying Instructions: 1. Start the thread just behind the eye and wind it back towards the bend of the hook. 2. About half way back tye in the pheasant tail body fibers and then the peacock rib material. 3. Keep winding back towards the bend of the hook keeping the body thin and smooth as possible. Take the thread half way down the bend and stop. 4. Now take the thread forward leaving 1/3 space behind the hook eye. 5. Now coat the thread wraps with a little head cement and wind the body material forward in touching turns, try and keep the pheasant fibers form twisting, this will keep the body smooth. With the body tyed off where you stopped the thread, counter wrap the rib forward and tye it off. 6. Tye in the wing case material on top of the hook facing back towards the hook bend, dub and wrap the thorax, not too heavy, allow space behind the hook eye for the wings and hackle. 7. Now pull the wing case over and tye it off. 8. Now tye in the hackle tips which should reach to the bend of the hook. Now tye in the hackle and make 2 wraps and tye it off. Make a smooth head and seal with head cement. - JERRY CRISS TLFLY44@MSN.COM 8 The Central Oregon Flyfisher M A Y

9 continuing to fish an active hatch or feeding pod of fish. The importance of allowing fish adequate time to recover is illustrated in the following excerpt read to our sister Sunriver Anglers Club last year by Charlie Schilinsky: Crane Prairie(and likely Wickiup) has reached critical temperatures for successful release of trout we had two {wild Cranebow} killed last week. The top 2 ½ or 3 feet of water is 77 degrees and so oxygen poor that hooked fish dig to stay out of it as long as they can This condition will get worse as lake levels drop with irrigation releases. So, what can we do to prevent losing 1,000s of Cranebows? 1. Fish 3X or heavier tippets and get them to the net quickly; 2. Netting and removing them from the water further stresses them to the point that revival iffy; 3. Use barbless or micro-barb hooks only for quick releases; 4. Have Ketchum Release or Hemostats at hand (not just in your vest) to unbutton the fish quickly; 5. Holding them out of water for photos is worse; 6. Do not try to revive fish by moving them back and forth in the top 2-3 ft of water, Its hot and oxygen poor and they ll suffocate (I know we just told you we re going to show you how to make a fish cradle that will hold the fish in the top 2 ft of water!) 7. Use long-handled fish friendly net baskets no mesh or string netting. 8. Be aware that there is something called delayed mortality. Many fish that swim off may look OK but die within 24 hours from the stress. Leave them in the water and be quick about releases. Crane is a special place {as is Cultus, the Lava s, Wickiup, East and Paulina Lakes}, and we need to respect these wild fish if we expect todays inchers to grow to 10+ pounders in our lifetime. Tour of PGE Pelton Dam Selective Water Withdrawal Facilities We are trying to arrange another guided tour to the PGE & Warm Spring facilities at Round Butte and Regulating Dams on Lake Billy Chinook and the Deschutes River. This field trip shows the Selective Water Withdrawal facility (SWW). The SWW re-establishes the connection for anadromous Steelhead, Chinook and Sockeye Salmon between the ocean and 250 stream miles of habitat in the Upper Deschutes Basin. Annually, they collect between 37,000 and 262,000 smolts at the SWW transporting them to the lower Deschutes River to continue their downstream migration.stay tuned for date and time. We are still waiting to hear back from the PGE Fisheries Biologist Rich Madden for possible dates for another TOUR of the Pelton Dam Selective Water Withdrawal facilities. This was perhaps our most popular field trip of last year. There is quite a lot of controversy around the effects of this dam system on the quality of river system below the dams. The effort to restore the historic anadromous fish runs [primarily Spring Chinook & Sockeye Salmon and Steelhead Trout] has had some modest success from the first single returning Chinook Salmon in 2013 to a reported 2,500 fish in On this tour you will see fish collected at the Regulating Dam at Warm Springs. Then move up to the Pelton Dam and observe the collection of smolts headed down stream from the Crooked, Deschutes and Metolius River systems. A YouTube documentary on the various parts of the work beginning done on the lower Deschutes can be seen at: Fish Habitat Improvements on the Deschutes River. - DALTON MILLER-JONES MILLERJONESD@GMAIL.COM - FRED CHOLICK FCHOLICK@GMAIL.COM CO-EDUCATION DIRECTORS WILD WOMEN OF THE WATER- Our 101 Flyfishing Class with the Wild Women is completed. 11 Thank you Crooked River Volunteers Many club members enjoy fishing the beautiful Crooked River throughout the year so it is nice to give back once and awhile. More than 40 volunteers braved the very strong winds of April 7th for the annual COF Crooked River Cleanup. After the cleanup we enjoyed a sunny and pleasant lunch back at the Big Bend Campground. A few volunteers, but not very many, took the opportunity to fish the afternoon. That wind was brutal downstream from Big Bend.
