Photo: Ken Morrish JURASSIC LAKE, ARGENTINA Jurassic Lake Loop Adventures Jurassic Lake is unquestionably the most prolific trophy rainbow fishery on the planet. Measuring approximately 20 by 20 kilometers, Jurassic is located at 3,000 feet elevation in the wide open, desolate expanse of the Patagonian steppe. Teaming with scuds, fish here average over 10 pounds with countless fish in the mid-teens, as well as monsters in the pound class. These fish are freakishly stout, incredibly strong and wildly acrobatic. The camp, built and outfitted by Loop of Sweden, is located at the mouth of the lake s only significant tributary. This is far and away the best location on the lake with anglers racking up big numbers during prime months. Unfortunately there is no easy way to get there and the all day, gut-busting Drive from Hell is a deterrent of significant proportions for all but the most hearty. The Loop camp consists of very simple cabins and a complex of sturdy geodesic domes. The camp can take as many as nine anglers who sleep either two or three per cabin. There are comfortable beds with bedding and an electric light. Excellent, hearty meals and dinners are served in big dome. Rate: 3,390 per person for a 6 night/5 day package Jurassic Lake Laguna Verde Lodge For those who would like to see Jurassic Lake but would rather not endure the grueling trip into the rustic Loop camp, we proudly represent Laguna Verde Lodge. With three hours less driving time and all the comforts you have come to expect from Argentine lodges, Laguna Verde s guest list is growing as quickly as the massive trout that surround it. Laguna Verde Lodge has three distinct and unique elements to its fishing program and the first and foremost is Jurassic Lake. It takes 60 minutes to get from the lodge to the lake. Catch rates vary widely depending on weather, season, skill level and location. During the right wind and weather conditions, drift boats are often employed to stalk the lake s monster trout. The other two fishing elements concentrate on the lake s inlet, the Barrancoso River, and nearby Laguna Verde (Green Lake). The river is a great place to fish a 5-6 weight rod and at certain times of the year the fishing can be exceptional. KEN MORRISH Ken Morrish has been a full time fly fishing professional for the past 20 years. Ken is widely recognized as a fly tier and his extensive line of fly patterns is produced and distributed by Idylwilde Flies of Portland, Oregon. Ken is also a dedicated environmentalist whose primary focus is on the cold water fisheries of Alaska and British Columbia. No Seriously, It s a Job by Brian Gies Ken and I have been running Fly Water Travel for nearly twelve years now and when we tell new acquaintances what we do for a living, we are almost always met with the same, seemingly scripted response. It starts with Really? followed by Wow, that sounds like too much fun. Next it is So I bet you have to personally visit all those destinations? The boldest skeptics ask What does your wife do? meaning they think she must be a trial attorney patiently supporting an improbable venture. This past November while in Belize, a young man hit me with my favorite response to date Are you kidding me? he exclaimed, What is that? Some sort of Jedi mind trick? To have people express amazement at our chosen profession is a healthy shot to the ego but in the same breath, we do not take our good fortune for granted. After twelve years we still marvel at our occupation, our business continued growth and prosperity, and the remarkable folks we have come to know in the process. Contrary to popular belief, we don t live out of fancy lodges and fish every day, though we like the thought. In the end, selling travel is a real job, like most others. Our goal is to create the best possible experiences for our clients and to sell trips with excitement and honesty. We strive to make the billing and confirmation process professional and efficient. We have a highly skilled staff and a very real office with lots of desks, chairs, and computers. We all show up five days a week, answer phones and respond to countless s. We work hard, miss lunch often, and work nights when needed. And fortunately, when it is all said and done, we still really enjoy what we do. The hardest part of the job though, hinges on the fact that we really want every angler to have the trip of a lifetime. Sadly, the truth of the matter is that due to the uncertainties of fishing and travel, not everyone does. The variables that all traveling anglers confront are dynamic and complex. These are the things that we lose sleep over and factors that compel us to fully disclose all that we know in hopes of having anglers embark on their elected adventures well prepared and with realistic expectations. Now back to the bright side and those predictable questions. Yes, we do get to travel and fish the world s greatest destinations. Yes, it is amazing. Yes, we get to meet wonderful people. Yes, our customers are some of the kindest and most interesting people we know, and yes, surgeons and captains of industry often take our calls when they shouldn t, because they, like us, love nothing more than the simple act of fishing. So does it all boil down to some sort of Jedi mind trick? Well, when the sun is shining and the fish are on the grab, we think it safe to say that even Obi- Wan Kenobi would have a smile on his face.

15 CHARLES GEHR Charles is the newest member of the Fly Water Travel sales team and specializes in the trout and steelhead fisheries of the Pacific Northwest, the Rockies, and British Columbia. A passionate and experienced angler, he has spent the past five years as a full-time trout and steelhead guide on Oregon s Deschutes River. Prior to his tenure on the Deschutes, Charles lived in Ashland, Oregon and fished the waters of Southern Oregon and Northern California extensively. Charles is an excellent fly tier, an extremely gifted spey caster and the best informed member of our staff on spey tackle and techniques. A University of Wyoming alumni, Charles also has a deep affection for and knowledge of the vast and varied trout fisheries of the Rockies and the American West.
