It's fishing for sport rather than food, where the true enjoyment of the sport lies in the challenge, the lore, the bale of wits, not necessarily the full creel. It's the feeling of sasfacon that comes from liming your kill instead of killing your limit. It's communing with nature where the chief reward is a refreshed body and a contented soul, where a license is a permit to use not abuse, to enjoy not destroy our cold water fishery. It's subscribing to the proposion that what's good for trout and salmon is good for the fisherman and that managing trout and salmon for themselves rather than the fisherman is fundamental to the soluon of our trout and salmon problems. It's appreciang our fishery resource, respecng fellow anglers and giving serious thought to tomorrow. I esmate if I e 1 fly a day, it should give me enough flies to give my usual donaon to the trees and have enough to fish the season. Monetary donaons are needed to purchase bucket raffle prizes for the November 3rd fundraiser event. There was a good turnout at the December holiday meeng, and thank you everyone for bringing a food item to the meeng. 3 Tips for January 2019 Happy New Year and Plenty of Tight Lines with Memorable Fishing Stories. I am running out of interes(ng (ps. I have not missed a month since October So, I need some help. Please send some of your secret informa(on to help catch fish or as I like to say, It s about quality not quan(ty. Longer Rods Makes for a Be8er Bow-and-Arrow Cast - On ny water (like we have here in the East), a lot of folks want to go to these really short rods. When it gets really ght, it can be be:er to go (kind of) long. An 8 foot rod allows for casng where there is some room but much more efficient for the bow-and-arrow casts that are absolutely crical. (Mark Taylor) See Bow-and-Arrow casts h:ps:// False Cast Behind Fish - Another small trick that will enhance your chances of hooking a surfacefeeding fish is to do false casng at an angle downstream of the fish. False casts can cause small droplets of water to be shed from the line. If these droplets fall to the surface of the stream on top of, or in front of the trout's posion, the trout will spook. (Jim Weaver) Watch Rise Forms for Air Bubbles - When trying to decide whether to fish a dry fly, emerger, or floang nymph, examine the rise forms of the feeding fish. If a bubble appears in the middle of the rise, it is an indicaon that the fish is taking insects floang on the surface. The absence of a bubble usually indicates the fish is taking insects just below the surface. Choose your fly accordingly. (Jim Weaver) Don't Fish When Teaching Kids to Fish - When you take a child fishing, it is best not to fish yourself. There is a lot for a child to learn, and your undivided a:enon will be very helpful in having the child start off on the right foot. It is also important not to stay out too long, especially with younger children. Their a:enon spans can be short, and they can become bored. (Jim Weaver) Prac(ce During Slack Fishing Periods - During most fishing oungs, there are periods of me when there are no hatching insects and the fishing is slow. This is a great me to pracce your casng and fly presentaon. There is no be:er place than on the water to do this. You can try double-hauls, right and let reach casts, S-casts, shock casts, etc. There is a lot wri:en about these casts, but many anglers don't use them. Become familiar with the mechanics of these and pracce them when the fish are not feeding. You will be glad you did. 5 Ron Urban, Past Chairman, NY Trout Unlimited Dear NY TU Members and Friends, I want to take a few moments to reflect on my 14 years as your chairman and the previous 4 years as a regional VP beginning in Through the years I have made friendships with many members, NGOs and government officials. My adventure began in June 2001 in Roscoe when I was asked to consider being the council chairman. I in turn asked a friend, Nat Gillespie, for his thoughts since we had worked together on the Beamoc Project when I was Region 3 VP. His words of support set me on this long and fulfilling journey. Thomas Edison once said, I start where the last man let off. I m certainly not comparing my achievements to Edison s, but I do feel that we, as a council, have achieved numerous accomplishments and partnerships through my efforts as your chairman. The future leaders will connue in following the TU Mission. Our achievements over 14 years are in great part due to working together with a common goal. To make the resources a be:er environment and habitat for trout and salmon. I never considered myself to be a Lone Ranger. Whatever the project or issue there was always someone I could turn to for knowledge and advice in the Council, government enes and naonal TU. As I approach my ancipated rerement, I look forward to having me to relax and e more flies with your parng git of the RenzeX Master Vise. I plan to do more day dreaming, small trips to fishing spots forgo:en for some me, and just enjoying life. No doubt, I will have much more me to do so. Working with all of you over the years has been my pleasure of which I feel honored. The friendships and memories I have made will always be part of my life. Looking ahead I see expanded opportunies, good health, supporve family and a free country to live out my years and streams to test my flies with ght lines. I wish the same for all of you. I won t menon names because there are too many to menon and don t want to forget anyone. I extend to all of you my thanks, ght lines and God s Blessings. 6 DEC Announces $379,879 in Trees for Tribs Grant Awards to Projects Across the State Funding Supports Tree Planting to Improve Wildlife Habitat, Protect Water Quality, and Increase Storm Resiliency New York State Department of Environmental Conservaon (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos today announced a total of $379,879 in grants for projects that will protect and increase forested buffers along streams. The grants are part of a new iniave of DEC's Trees for Tribs Program, which supports streamside tree and shrub planngs to prevent erosion, increase flood water retenon, improve habitat, and protect water quality in communies across the state. "For more than a decade, DEC's Trees for Tribs program and its many partners have significantly improved the ecological health and resiliency of our watersheds through streamside planng and maintenance efforts," said Commissioner Seggos. "Thanks to Governor Cuomo, the funding made available for these grants through the State's Environmental Protecon Fund will connue to bolster and sustain these efforts into the future." The grants announced today extend the reach of the Trees for Tribs Program to all New York Watersheds. Of the 10 projects that will receive funding, nine are in areas new to receiving assistance through the program. All selected projects include educaon and volunteer engagement components in their workplans. The grant funding is supported by the State's Environmental Protecon Fund (EPF) and was made available to municipalies, academic instuons, and not-for-profits. Selected projects in eligible locaons were required to involve planng nave trees and shrubs along streams. The State Budget includes $300 million for the EPF, sustaining the fund at its highest level ever. The funding supports state land stewardship, agriculture programs, invasive species prevenon and eradicaon, water quality improvement, municipal recycling, and an aggressive environmental jusce agenda. In addion, the EPF is establishing new programs to help communies adapt to climate change through resiliency planning and capital projects.
