1 Vol. 35, # 9 May 2008 T.U. PHILOSOPHY We believe that trout and salmon fishing isn't just fishing for trout and salmon. It's fishing for sport rather than food, where the true enjoyment of the sport lies in the challenge, the lore, the battle of wits, not necessarily the full creel. It's the feeling of satisfaction that comes from limiting your kill instead of killing your limit. It's communing with nature where the chief reward is a refreshed body and a contented soul, where a license is a permit to use not abuse, to enjoy not destroy our cold water fishery. It's subscribing to the proposition that what's good for trout and salmon is good for the fisherman and that managing trout and salmon for themselves rather than the fisherman is fundamental to the solution of our trout and salmon problems. It's appreciating our fishery resource, respecting fellow anglers and giving serious thought to tomorrow. Wow! I hope everyone had a great time at this year s annual banquet. It took a lot of TEAMWORK to pull off such an event. My thanks go out to all that helped make this year s come off so well, the board members and non-board members helping the day-of to set-up. Thank you to all the members & great sponsors that donated so much to this banquet, we could not have done it without you. The artwork was amazing, rods, rods and more rods. The next day, after the banquet, the tallying work began. Can you guess how many bucket raffles were in this years buckets? 6652! By the way I won the Winston Vapor 4 wt 8 6 in the last bucket raffle. I cannot wait to use it - maybe this Friday. April was a busy month as our members helped the DEC at this years Spring Fishing Festival with over 5800 people attending, nearly double last year s Festival. We finished our stream survey up in Oyster Bay having documented almost 13 miles of freshwater streams and tributaries. Now we have to do the paperwork to record them. Elizabeth Macklin from TU National will be at our guest speaker next general meeting. It should be an interesting meeting, so bring a friend. The spring outing is sold out and should be a great weekend. Mark your calendars for the Fall Outing - Oct (What a shame I need to take my daughter to Delhi college this weekend. where should we fish?) Hope to see you at the meeting. Until then - let s remember to do what we can to Educate, Conserve, Protect and Restore! Tight Lines. Next meeting: Tuesday, May 20th at 7:30 PM Elizabeth Macklin TU s VP of Eastern Conservation will be making a presentation Don t Miss It! Bob Lutz 1

3 OB-CSH Watershed Tributary Survey Update by Jeff Plackis As part of the Oyster Bay-Cold Spring Harbor Watershed Fish Passage Assessment Project, the Chapter committed to conducting a habitat assessment of all tributaries within the watershed. A particular goal of this assessment was to identify, characterize, evaluate, and prioritize for mitigation all impoundments, ponds, lakes and dams, in addition to other barriers, such as road culverts, throughout the watershed. Classification included type of barrier, function, ownership, impacts (thermal pollution, stream fragmentation, sedimentation, wetland loss) and ecological (such as bird species diversity or associated wetlands) and cultural benefits (such as fishing, boating or historic significance), if any. Over the course of four days, two in May 2007 and two in March/April 2008, Jeff Plackis, Joe Odierna and John Fischer, who are trained in the USDA Stream Visual Assessment Protocol (SVAP), led teams of volunteers from Long Island TU, Friends of the Bay, Environmental Defense, Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium, North Shore Land Alliance and NYS DEC, in assessing all tributary miles within the Oyster Bay-Cold Spring Harbor watershed. The eight streams within the watershed that were assessed included Cold Spring Creek, Tiffany Creek, Mill River, Beekman Creek, Spring Lake Creek, Beaver Brook, Kaintuck Creek and Factory Pond Creek. They represent a drainage area of roughly 25,995 acres or square miles. Nearly 12.5 miles of streams were assessed and produced a staggering total of 43 SVAP s. The survey teams documented within the watershed eighteen (18) barriers with a vertical drop greater than 3 and numerous others with a drop of greater than 1. In addition, more than 35 culverts were identified, some of which currently pose a barrier to upstream migration. A total of 368 volunteer hours were utilized to collect this data. All this information will be analyzed over the next several months and a full report prepared and submitted to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. The chapter will also meet with local landowners and government officials to present the findings of the tributary assessment, in the hope that some of the problems identified can be addressed over the next few years. The chapter has also selected a consultant to perform the Feasibility Study on Oyster Bay Mill Pond and develop options for fish passage. Mill River currently supports a small, fragile population of native brook trout, a species known to adopt an anadromous life history if provided access to estuarine and marine waters. More details will follow as a final agreement is hammered out between the parties. Thank you to all the volunteers who wandered through the woods, backyards & muck, we couldn t have done it without you. Job well done!! 3

4 IT WORKS! Bay Shore High School East Trout in the Classroom Release - Environmental/Marine Biology Club students and teacher s from Bay Shore High School East participated in a release of 100 brook trout that they raised in their school. They set them free into the Carl s River on Thursday, April 10 th, Students participated in a kick-net macroinvertibrate survey and found that their fingerling trout will have plenty of food to eat in the natural world. Teacher Denise Kaplaus said that the students really learned a lot about brook trout and the water quality needed to sustain them. This is the school s second year of participation. The student s enthusiasm shows as they have a high survival rate with a small amount of mortality. This is one successful program. <Photo: Getting ready to show the students how to seine for macroinvertebrates. Photo below: Students checking out bug life in the Carlls River. George Costa of the Art Flick Chapter reported that there are alewives in the Carmans River along with other signs that the fish ladder is working. Help stop the spread of invasive plants and viruses: CHECK - your boots and boats before leaving a stream and remove any obvious clumps of algae and dirt. Leave them at the site. CLEAN - Soak and scrub all items for at least one minute in either hot water, a 2% solution of bleach or 5% solution of dishwashing soap. DRY - Let your gear dry for 48 hours before using in another water way. 6 Friday night, April 18th was LITU s 26th Annual Conservation Banquet at the Stuart Thomas Manor in Farmingdale. The activity started early in the day with the Banquet committee arriving to set up the room, sort out the donated prizes and prepare for the crowd to arrive at 6:30, when the bar opened. There were Bucket Raffles, two large Silent Auctions, 50/50 card decks, a Balloon game, a Dart board as well as everyone s favorite, the Verbal Auction with our auctioneer, Mr. Mike Greco, doing the honors. Drinks, Hors devours and dinner were plentiful and delicious; and the conversation and camaraderie were just the best. We had 132 guests and over 350 prizes including a Chuck Neuner cane rod, a Catskill model bamboo from Jay Mooney, luggage from Orvis, reel from Camp-site, art from Jack Pangburn, John Rice, Boyd Shockley and John Fischer, Dom Perignon from the Groudas, trips with guides (see page 7&10), stays at West Branch Anglers and the Delaware River Club, and so much more. Boyd handled the logistics and cashier duties as Peter was the affable Master of Ceremonies. We grossed over $20,000. Other Banquet Committee members and volunteers including Pete Harris, John Fischer, Bob Lutz, Tony Jones, Tom LoProto, Jay Mooney, Mark Gilman, Paul & Merrill Lehman, Jeff Plackis, Rick Lewis, Diane Dubno, Sol & Felicia Harz, Joe Odierna, Hank Buthe, Ed Ciano filled the many other roles. Alan Pomeroy received a Certificate of Appreciation and plaque for all of his quiet but consistent volunteer work since he joined the Chapter in He is a conservationist and true gentleman. See Page 9 for more photos. The Adopt a Service Person Program (or AASPP for short) is a way to recognize those Long Islanders serving in the military, who are or would like to be trout fishers. LITU has formalized this program to include the following for those nominated and selected: A one year membership in TU and the LITU Chapter, ed Newsletter, an LITU Hat and Tee Shirt as well as a LITU member will take them out fishing with a box of local flies LITU will provide when they come home. Anyone can nominate any active duty service person who they think would enjoy being adopted. This month we are pleased to announce our 2nd adoptee - 1st Lieutenant Chris Jameson, USMC who was nominated by his Dad, an LITU er. Chris has served two tours in Iraq and is currently attached to the elite multi-service world-wide rapid response team in Virginia. Jay Mooney took him out for a day of fishing and a good time was had by all. Chris was especially appreciative of how green our beautiful Island is after so much time in the middle east. If you know a service person who would like to be adopted just let any board member know. 6

7 Actually this is the fly for every month, and every river, and every fisherperson - it is the ADAMS. Versatile and unfailing in its ability to imitate almost anything in its various sizes and modifications. No one should be without one in fact you should have a few of each, traditional and parachute, in the sizes you are trying to imitate. If they are not biting just go a size up or a size down. Not being a tier, I can t help you with the recipe - I buy mine and when I buy a fly I have a little rule: I always buy 6: 2 for me, 2 for the tree and 2 to give away! Tight Lines. Ed. Montana Day Dream by Tom LoProto Can't wait to have had a great breakfast at the Running Bear Pancake house, having fished the whole morning and afternoon on the Gallatin River, and thinking about sitting in Eino's, having a chilled Root Beer and a 2 inch thick porterhouse steak in front of me hanging off the plate, getting ready to fish the 3 Dollar Bridge on the Madison River that evening. Oops, almost forgot...a double-decker Dairy Queen cone dipped in chocolate to top the day off. My head then hits the pillow, dreaming about the next day. Can't wait! To be accompanied by humming to the song "Cheek to Cheek" by Irving Berlin (lyrics below) Heaven... I'm in heaven, And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak. And I seem to find the happiness I seek, When we're out together in a river or a creek. Heaven... I'm in heaven, And the cares that hung around me through the week, Seem to vanish like a gambler's lucky streak, When we're out together in a river or a creek. Oh, I love to climb a mountain, And to reach the highest peak. But it doesn't thrill me half as much As being in a river or a creek. Oh, I love to go out fishing In a river or a creek.
