1 ( The Tribal name of Long island ) Long Island Chapter of Trout Unlimited Newsletter T.U. PHILOSOPHY We believe that trout and salmon fishing isn't just fishing for trout and salmon. It's fishing for sport rather than food, where the true enjoyment of the sport lies in the challenge, the lore, the battle of wits, not necessarily the full creel. It's the feeling of satisfaction that comes from limiting your kill instead of killing your limit. It's communing with nature where the chief reward is a refreshed body and a contented soul, where a license is a permit to use not abuse, to enjoy not destroy our cold water fishery. It's subscribing to the proposition that what's good for trout and salmon is good for the fisherman and that managing trout and salmon for themselves rather than the fisherman is fundamental to the solution of our trout and salmon problems. It's appreciating our fishery resource, respecting fellow anglers and giving serious thought to tomorrow. June 2018 Next Chapter Meeting: Tuesday, June 19 7:30 PM Fly-Fishing Video Night Hicksville VFW Hall 320 South Broadway, Hicksville, NY Dear Anglers and Conservationists, Join Us for the LITU Annual Banquet I'm both happy and sad to say this is the Friday November 3rd, 2017 last president's line for both my presidency and the summer. 3 Tips for June 2018 Mayfly Tails - Use a clump of thread wrapped at the end of the shank to fan out the fibers used for the tails. Place the fibers along the shank a little towards you and wind back. When you hit the clump of thread, the tail fibers should splay nicely. Jim Weaver Small Glass Jars Also Make Good Containers - Small glass jars with metal screw-on caps make great containers in which to store feathers. Jars prevent the feathers from being crushed, seal completely to keep out insects, are not affected by moth balls, and are transparent so the contents can be readily identified. The kind of jars used for baby food, olives, peppers, mustard, etc. are good (7-oz. sizes are ideal). Of course, jars of larger or smaller sizes can be used depending on the amounts of the particular material you have to store. Jim Weaver Hair Wings That Hold - This method of tying hair on a hair-wing style caddis will not come apart. Place the clump of hair on top of the shank and wrap 5 or 6 tight turns at the tie-in point. Then, lift up onefourth of the butts and make two wraps. Repeat this twice more, each time lifting one-fourth of the clump before making two wraps. Finally, place some head cement on the thread, lift up the final portion, tie off at the eye, and clip the butts to form the head. Marty Arnsel between the razor blades. Of course, be careful with the razor blades. Jim Weaver Dropper Tippet Should Be Finer - An effective way to fish nymphs is to fish two nymphs at once. This allows you to show the fish two different flies at the same time and reduces the time it may take to determine what insect the fish are feeding on. As a general rule, fish the dropper off the eye of the upper fly and keep the dropper tippet one size smaller. For example, if the tippet to the upper fly is 5X, a section of 6X tippet material is used for the dropper. If this is done, the dropper moves more freely in the water and, if the dropper should snag and have to be broken off, only the dropper is lost since the lighter tippet should break first. Jim Weaver Enjoy Your Summer and for those hot stream water temperature days over 70F sit on the bank and enjoy the view. Life is to short and you don t want to miss a single moment and fish will thank you when the water temps are lower. Send your tips to KensTUTips@verizon.net Calendar of Events June 19, Chapter Meeting Cutting Zonker (and Crosscut) Strips - To cut strips from a piece of hide, attach the hide to a table using two spring clips. Attach the hide underside up and cut either straight (parallel to the fur) for Zonker strips or crosscut (diagonally) for wrapping around the shank. Use a single edge razor blade to cut strips holding the remainder of the hide with the left (weak) hand. Attaching several razor blades together using small nuts and bolts will allow you to cut multiple strips with one pass of the blades. The width of the strips can be adjusted by putting washers 3
