1 Ozark Fly Fishers Newsletter June 2018 General Meeting Thursday, June 28th 2018 Windegger Shelter Pavilion Tilles Park 2399 S. McKnight Rd. St. Louis, MO Starting at 5:00 PM dinner served at 6 PM Ozark Fly Fishers Annual BBQ This month s meeting is our annual BBQ. We meet At Tilles Park 2399 S McKnight Rd, St. Louis, MO in Ladue, MO (Litzsinger and McKnight). Get together starts about 5 PM and dinner is served around 6 PM. Again, this year food will be provided by Yo Dawg. We have the Windegger Shelter Pavilion reserved. This is also our annual casting meeting. Bring your rod and be prepared to cast from the dam on the lake beside the pavilion. Casting instructors will be present to answer any questions and give advice on casting. This is always one of our members favorite meetings as we get time to meet and greet as well as cast and eat. Please plan on attending. Casting Tip June 2018 By: Bill Armon If there is no pause in the casting motion between the fore and the back cast what will happen? Is this the most important of the five casting essentials? If the line does not straighten out before a change of direction is made the cast will fail. The pause is what allows the line to straighten and load the rod. This is because if the line is not straight the rod is not under tension (it is not loaded) and there is slack in the line. This results in the motion of the rod not moving the fly line (until the slack is removed). If a loud pop is heard when you start your fore cast you did not pause long enough. The pause is an essential part of the cast!

3 Tying with the Renegade Tying with the Renegade Flashy Storage Flashabou, Crystal Flash and other flashy materials are a pain to store in such a manner that they stay straight, don t get crumpled, and are available for use. Some stores (7-11 stores) sell a drink called a Slurpee which comes with a special drinking straw that is flared at one end. Slit the straw lengthwise with a razor blade. Most of the flashy materials come bund with a plastic clip at one end. Insert this clip into the flared end of the straw and pull forward until all the material is encased in the straw. This method is cheap and space-conserving, and identification of the material is easy... Ugly flies catch fish, pretty flies catch fisherman and well tied flies catch both. Fly of the Month June 2018 FIREHOLE STICKS Designed in Bozeman made in China by Mike Ott I have been an advocate for tying and fishing barbless hooks for years now both for the conservation aspect and for the hooking and holding abilities of the European-style barbless hooks. My frustration has always been a combination of cost versus quality and availability. They can be expensive, but more often than not, you just cannot get them from local sources. I hate shopping for them online, but that s how it has been. You could find some Partridge and Tiemco, but in limited styles and now Umpqua/TMC has just about priced themselves out of the market their latest price increase now makes them even more expensive than the European brands even though many of their hooks are made by the same companies. Ordering online can be a bit dicey as well, since the new hooks and styles vary considerable size-to-size and brandto-brand. Apparently hook size standards have fallen away all together these days. You almost have to see the hooks before you can size them up for your intended purpose. Well, wait no more. Feather-Craft Fly Fishing now stocks the new Firehole Sticks line of barbless hooks. A familyowned business based in Bozeman, Montana, these are a new line of hooks that are both very high quality and moderately affordable - $7.50 for 36 Sticks. Equally important, they are available locally to touch, feel, fondle, and examine. They are made of good quality steel with a nickel-black finish, come in a wide variety of styles and sizes, and are needle sharp. After purchasing an assortment to try out, I decided to pass on my product review. You can look up the available styles and sizes in the store or on Feather-Craft s website, or at Fireholeoutdoors.com. These are not the entire line of hook models that Feather- Craft stocks, and Firehole also has other hooks available directly from Bozeman. I bought this assortment based on what I tie and fish. I m sure I will eventually experiment with all of their styles and a few more sizes as I tie various patterns and variations. If you are looking for patterns for the pictured flies, they have all been fly-of-the-month at some time or another. I still tie and fish them all, and now I am using the Firehole brand barbless hooks. Great quality barbless hooks at a reasonable price now available locally. Stop by Feather-Craft Fly Fishing and take a look.. Ozark Fly Fishers, Inc June 2018 Page 4
