2 President's Message: Hope everyone had great holiday season. It has been cold, but a few are still getting out to fish. Winter can be the best time to get outdoors if you are equipped to handle the weather. Fishing always seems to be good and the sights and sounds really stand out. Our end of the catch and release season outing is coming up in Feb. This is a great social event no matter how the weather turns out for the weekend. Look for more info on the FYAO outing in this newsletter. As for outings, we will offer a new spring outing on the North Fork of the White River in April. Info on this should be listed in the outings section of this newsletter. The club will have winter classes this year co-hosted with the St Louis Co. Parks and Recreation Dept. We will teach an introduction into fly fishing with coverage of equipment, rigging and technics that everyone can pick up something new or a different way of doing something. The class will be on intro to fly tying. This class will start someone on the road to learning the tools and methods of tying your own flies. Fly tying is more enjoyable than fishing to many people. All tools and materials will be furnished. The fishing class will be offered on two separate nights at Queeny Park, in the room we have our monthly meetings at, on Jan. 9 and again on Jan. 16. Tying classes will be on Jan. 19 and Feb. 6. All classes will be from 7-9 pm. There is a $8.00 fee and advanced registration is required. Call If you were not at the last meeting, we announced the Board of Directors for I want to thank those who stepped up to fill these positions. The following list will show the person s name, position and phone number. If you have a question on a particular subject, give them a call or feel free to call me anytime. 3 Fly of the month - January 2017 Olive Tungsten Torpedo During the winter and early spring small flies out-produce larger flies, and getting deep and staying deep is critical to catching fish. It s all about offering a small, dense fly that consistently sinks fast through the water column and stays there. This fly fall under the euro-nymph category and is designed to do just that. In addition, it is simple to tie, durable, and produces fish under a range of conditions. Hook: Dohiku N302 size or equivalent Bead: Gold Tungsten of appropriate size Thread: 8/0 Olive Tail: Several fibers of dark Coq de Leon Ribbing: Small Black and Small Gold Ultra Wire Collar: Bronze Peacock Dubbing Place bead on hook and secure hook in vise. Start thread behind the bead and advance to the hook bend. Tie in tail about the length of the body securing the butts all the way to the bead. Tie in one strand each of the black and gold wire right behind the bead and secure all the way to the bend. Add one more layer of thread back to the bead to form the body. It should be slim and even front to back. Wrap the two wires together to just behind the bead. Secure with thread wraps and break off the excess. Dub a compact collar of the Bronze Peacock right behind the bead, whip-finish the thread, and trim the thread. Pick out dubbing a bit, and it is ready to fish. In winter, I fish this as the top fly with an unweighted nymph as a dropper. I try to get it as close to the bottom as possible because that s where the fish are. This fly is streamlined enough to sink fast, so it is great for sight-fishing as well. Casting Tips January 2017 By Bill Armon CCI Middle of winter, colder than (we want it to be) and the line freezes in the guides. This is a good time to practice indoors. Several companies make indoor practice rods and they work well. With these tools, you can also learn to throw tight or open loops, as well as perfect your timing. The motion required to make these rods work truly is the same as the motion needed to make a 9-foot rod work properly. Yes, there is a big difference in the weight and length of the rod but the motion is the same. Practice with one of these this winter and you will cast better this spring. True, there are limitations: Beware of cats while you practice and this is not the way to improve your double haul. If you are a do it yourself type you can even make an indoor practice rod out of a dowel rod and some yarn and some tape. I would recommend you purchase one as they will be superior but the home-made ones work also. See you on the stream this spring casting better? Ozark Fly Fishers, Inc January 2017 Page 3

George Bohigian Ten years ago my wife and I took an adult evening six week course at Washington University on the fishing in literature.we read and discussed the classics such as Izaak Walton's "The Compleat Angler", "A River Runs Through It", The River Why" and "Moby Dick" Some of the pearls that I gleaned and remembered were : Izaak Walton wrote " if you are not catching fish go to a smaller fly. " In "A River Runs Through It" by Norman Maclean - he points out poignantly that a life can be wasted in spite of having a great supportive family and talent."the River Why" by David Duncan is reflective about our connection to nature and one another."moby Dick" by Herman Melville demonstrates how an obsessive quest for revenge can lead to disaster. We were assigned for the last session to write an essay on fishing and to be read in class..mine follows... " Why fish? Life is like a river you must put a line into the water. The line connects you to the primordial elements of the fish and being. Fulfilling a thirst for the simple life and hope the tug - and the reaffirmation of the connection of the soul and the natural life." When my wife and I got into the car to go home.i asked her how she liked my short essay? She replied "who wrote it for you?" I stated "I did!" She said "no way " I said "why don't you believe me?". She answered "it was too good!" I took it as a great compliment. I reminded her that genius is made of four parts, talent, passion. practice and a strong mentor. I only have the "passion " So that's Why Ozark Fly Fishers, Inc January 2017 Page 6

8 Trying Tenkara at Maramec Spring By: Jacob Voss It was the penultimate day of I was about a mile from the Maramec Spring park entrance when I realized the flies I had tied up for this trip were still sitting in on my desk at home. No fly-fishing trip ever goes off without a hitch in the plan, but this moment seemed to set the tone for the rest of the day. As with any trip, I would have to overcome the little hiccups to have a decent year-end day of fishing. For Christmas, this year my wife bought me a Tenkara Rod Co. Teton Rod. Christmas was on a Sunday, and by that Friday, I was already trying out my new gear on the stream. I strung up the new Teton Rod, and I was ready to cast at the opening bell. I began the morning below the "pond" and worked my way downstream throwing various nymphs. About halfway through the park, I was fishing in about two feet of water when a lens popped out of my prescription sunglasses and promptly sank to the bottom of the stream. I could easily see the lens and reach it, but my entire right forearm was soaked thereafter. Try as I might, I couldn't repair my sunglasses at the stream. It turns out a fillet knife makes a terrible glasses screwdriver. All morning, it was blistering cold. I had on several layers of clothing, but still was losing feeling in my fingertips. Honestly, I think the fingerless gloves I own do more harm than good. They seem to cut off circulation to my fingertips, causing that crazy needle-jabbing sensation whenever blood does start to flow back into them. The weather did begin to slowly warm as the sun rose, and by lunch, I could shed my heaviest layers. It was at lunch that I noticed that my Tenkara fly line had magically developed several wind knots. Between the braided line and the fact that my fingers were still half-frozen, I couldn't seem to get it untangled, so I switched back my traditional fly rod. I would have to wait until another day to land my first trout on a Tenkara rod. I'd be more upset, but it just gives me another excuse to go fishing. With the sun shining and the temperature rising, so too did the trout. In the "pond" area of the spring, countless water rings began to appear. Rainbows were taking flies off the surface just feet from the bank. Word soon got out, and it became a popular spot. I tied on a dry parachute Adams, size 16, and sure enough, I had a trout in my net after only a few minutes. It was good that dries were hitting, as I couldn't see underwater due to my broken sunglasses and a heavy glare from the sun. Fly placement and drift were far more important that afternoon. For more details about this trip, visit Ozark Fly Fishers, Inc January 2017 Page 8

9 A Tip from an Aging Dry Fly Fisherman 1/10/2017 You Are What You Hang Around With Growing up I was always told that old cliché You are what you hang around with. I told it to my kids when they were growing up and I still use it today. I think that is one of the reasons that we join clubs, to be with people that have the same aspirations as we do. You could say that is why we sit down and tie flies together. Sure you can lone wolf tying flies, we all do and that can be very satisfying on many levels. When you sit down and tie with a couple of others it becomes a social event. You find out that there are many others that enjoy your company and in turn you have much more fun. Sharing something with others can bring a new level of fun to your hobby. Over the two year period that we have been getting together, people that have had the desire to learn how to tie but never put thread to hook have sat down with us. Today they have become wonderful tiers and incredible story tellers. Don t be afraid to come by and hang out with us. You may find that when you do you become what you hang around with. The way it works is a pattern is chosen to be demonstrated. The pattern and materials are listed on the Ozark Fly Fishers yahoo group a couple of days prior to the day of the demonstration. The fly shops are also notified of the needed materials for that pattern so when someone were to need anything pertaining to that pattern the shop should have it in stock. We have a time and a place to tie flies on a weekly basis. Tiers of all ages and skill level come from all over the Missouri, St. Louis area to sit down and enjoy the social event of fly tying. We tie with in a couple of miles of our two fly shops. The location is: Shur-Way Auto Body Inc Greenwood Blvd Maplewood, Mo We tie in the parts room in the building next door to the body shop. You can always call the body shop for directions or information on the tying times. The Date and Time: Every Wednesday from 5:00 till 7:00 pm. The pattern demonstration starts at 5 and is repeated thru out the two hours. There is no prescribed time to come by and tie with in those hours. There are tables, chairs and electric set up for tiers. The tying demonstration is done on a large TV viewed by all. Ozark Fly Fishers, Inc January 2017 Page 9
