1 Ozark Fly Fishers Newsletter September 2018 General Meeting Thursday, September 27 th, 2018 Greensfelder Recreation Complex Queeny Park 525 Weidman Road, Ballwin MO Starting at 7:00 PM Jeff Trigg Our guest speaker for the month of September is Jeff Trigg. As a RIO representative, Jeff will conduct a presentation on fly line construction, tapers and design as well as touching on leaders and tippets. Active in the local fly-fishing community, Jeff is a member of the Federation of Fly fishers, Trout Unlimited and past president of Capital City Fly fishers. He is also a member of the Sage Elite Pro Staff, a certified casting instructor through the FFF and the sales rep for Towee Boats in Arkansas and Missouri. Casting Tip 72 September 2018 By: Bill Armon CCI The rod tip must follow a straight-line path. Another of the essential casting principals. What does a straight-line path mean, what does it look like, and why is it important? A straight line is a straight line. The rod tip is the rod tip. Wait the rod bends so how can the tip stay in a straight-line path? It does if your casting arc and stroke are correct. The opposite of a straight-line path of the rod tip is the cast that does not bend the rod but instead forms an arch like path of the rod tip. (The windshield washer cast.) The importance of a straight-line path is that it results in a tighter loop being formed. It is difficult to fully explain this concept without photos so if you want to see more about this check out these videos. How to Fly Cast - Straight Line Path for Tighter Loops Fly Casting Essentials, Essential 5, Straight Line Path of the Rod Tip Presidents Message: It is time to start getting nominations for the club elections coming up in January. We need people to volunteer to put their names into the hat to fill the positions that are becoming vacant. The club can t go on without people willing to get involved with the day to day stuff that goes on. Please consider this opportunity to help with what it takes to make things happen with the club. Our existing board of directors have done an outstanding job the last four years and I see no reason why it will not stay the best fly-fishing club in the Midwest, as long as members get and stay involved. If you are interested, please contact our Nominating Chairman, Dan Rasch, , drasch27@hotmail.com If you have any questions about what the directors do please feel free to call me. Steve Antonic, sjantonic@charter.net, PH:

3 Fly of the Month - September 2018 Duracell Jig Nymph I ve been tying and fishing various Euro-style and jigged nymphs for a while now. I was introduced to the Duracell Jig while fishing in the Black Hills with Dave from Dakota Anglers. It quickly become one of my all-around go-to flies after Dave plucked it off his hat and tied it on before we even left the parking lot at every stream we fished. We did make a few changes throughout the day, but whenever changing streams, he always went back to the Duracell Jig as his anchor fly of choice. Reportedly created by Craig McDonald, the Duracell has quickly become a favorite pattern among the Euro or Czech style nymphing crowd. Made mostly of Ice Dub and wire, it is very durable, sinks well, and is just the right mix of color, flash, and motion. Hook: Your Favorite Barbless Jig Hook #12 to #16 I like the Hanak Superb Jig hook and the new Firehole Sticks Jig hook Bead: Appropriately-sized Slotted Tungsten Nickel or Nickel Black Thread: Veevus Brown or Camel Tail: Coq De Leon Tailing, Dyed Brown Body & Thorax: Ice Dub, UV Brown Ribbing: UTC Ultra Wire, Small, Red Collar: Brown CDC Position your bead on the hook, and secure hook in the vise. Start your thread behind the bead and advance thread to the hook bend.tie in 6-8 Coq De Leon fibers as the tail about the length of the body and trim the excess. Tie in a length of the red wire on the opposite side of the hook shank and wrap thread back over the wire and tail to the hook bend. Dub a tight, tapered body, to just behind the bead. Wrap an evenly-spaced wire rib to the bead and secure. Trim or twist off the excess wire. Tie the CDC feather in by the tip and make a collar with two wraps of the CDC. Secure with thread wraps and trim excess. Dub a thin thorax between the CDC collar and the bead to cover the thread wraps and to fill any gap between the fly and the bead. (This should not take much dubbing) Whip-finish and trim the thread. Don t be put off by the color you see as Ice Dub UV Brown. There is a lot of color going on in there and all of them apparently catch fish. I m still not sure about whether or not UV materials catch any more fish or not, but I like this material. I fish this fly just as close to the bottom as I can with either an unweighted dropper below it, or as the anchor fly in my Czech nymph rig. Mike Ott Ozark Fly Fishers, Inc September 2018 Page 3

4 27 th Annual Catch and Release Opening Weekend at Bennett Springs It is again time to begin plans and reservations for the OFF-winter C&R festivities at Bennett Springs Nov This year the no-creel fishing begins at 8 AM Friday, November 8th and continues on Saturday and Sunday until 4 PM each day. Hard to believe this is our 27 th year! (C&R fishing is open on Mondays also) We have reserved a block of rooms for the weekend at Sand Spring Resort. The restaurant there is now called the Gravel Bar & Grill and will be open only for lunch and dinner on Friday and breakfast (8:00am), lunch and dinner on Sat. and Sunday. Breakfast locations are now limited in the area. Our Sat. evening dinner will be held at the Bennett Springs Gathering place, just north of the park entrance (Gaston s old store). It has been converted to a banquet hall and worked great for us last year. We have secured a food source and drinks will be BYO, no bar. Coffee, tea, and lemonade will be furnished with dinner. We suggest carpooling as much as possible, but there is plenty of parking the road is dark and curvy, so a designated driver is suggested, if needed. Attn. Thursday Night folks., if interested, we will meet at the meeting room at Sand Springs just to talk and get a chance to see who s there. NO POT LUCK dinner but will have soda and water. The spring creek will be open for no-creel fishing but limited to flies and artificial (no bait). Instead of the daily tag of summer, you need only to get a Trout Permit ($7.00), good until February 2019, which are good at all four trout parks. You can get one anywhere Missouri licenses are sold. No daily tag is required. Again, we are offering package plans for accommodations plus tickets to the private Club dinner. Types of accommodations and rates will be found in the reservation request elsewhere in this newsletter. Remember, this is a club weekend, not just the guys go fishing at this one. Last year we had many couples. Plan to bring your special person even if he/she doesn t fish. There is fun to be had snooping in the antique shops and mall in Lebanon and there are several nice lunch spots in town. To avoid disappointment, mark your calendar for Nov.8-10 and send in your check (required) now. Note: There are only a few rooms with one bed. If you wish to fish on Mon. also you will have to make your reservation for Sun, night yourself. I will confirm receipt of your check by phone, post card or . Call Steve Antonic ( ) if you don t get confirmation of your check in a reasonable time. We do understand how plans can change. If you have a problem, a full refund will be made if you cancel by Oct. 30. After that date, refunds will be made only if we can resell your room. Dinner reservations will be accepted until Nov. 1 when we have to guarantee a count to the restaurant. Rooms will be reserved only as prepaid reservations are received. Please let us know early if you would like two or more rooms together for a group. Reservations will be confirmed early in November, advising you of your room number (phones in rooms). All sleeping rooms have a percolator, coffee cups and a small refrigerator. The housekeeping rooms have full size refrigerators, stove, utensils and plates, plus a dining table with 4 chairs. If you have never made it to C&R opening outing, ask someone who has and see why we have a good time and good fishing. A lot of info is exchanged by seasoned members to anyone who ask. (Sometimes more than you wanted to know or didn t even ask) If you have any questions, please call Steve, Ozark Fly Fishers, Inc September 2018 Page 4
