Dear Member Firstly I wish you all a Happy New Year an extremely wet and stormy New Year, but nevertheless a new year and the dawn of yet another fishing season. What will 2014 bring? Who knows - as the weather has proved, we are very much in the lap of the Gods and there s nothing that we or any other parties can do to influence this. However, we and these other parties have a huge role to play in the future management of the river. So who are these other parties? they are the Welsh Dee Trust, the Water Companies and NRW (National Resources Wales, formerly known as the Environment Agency). There are some very interesting times ahead and having investigated the issues affecting our river, I believe that 2014 will be pivotal to its future as a Salmon fishery. The areas for improvement and change are numerous and it would be impossible for me outline them in this newsletter, however I can assure you that there is a vision and a plan. If you wish to discuss it in detail then please contact me and I ll be happy to share it with you. You may remember that in the 2012 season our Club delivered a Salmon release rate of 87%, in 2013 this rate increased to 91%. Again, this demonstrates a remarkable level of commitment to the conservation of the Salmon and I can only reiterate the importance of this continued effort in the coming season. As I ve said in the past, we are doing our bit - it s therefore reasonable to expect that the relevant authorities will reciprocate our goodwill. Several of you have recorded your sightings of piscivorous birds for the last 2 seasons on the Club forum. As a result of your efforts, CADAC were granted a licence to control these birds in September Please continue to do so and for those who do not frequent the forum there will be an opportunity for you to add to this data by entering your sightings on a monitoring form issued by NRW. These forms are a mandatory requirement for the reissuing of a licence in September They will be situated within the CADAC fishing huts.please take the time to complete them. CADAC is the only Club who have applied for this licence in recent times another example of doing what we can! Double Handed Casting Tuition Derek Turner an AAPGAI qualified instructor has kindly offered to demonstrate and teach the rudiments of double handed casting. The venue will be Chain Pool on 27th April 10am. This will be on a first come, first served basis and tackle can be provided. Contact Derek to book on Single Handed Casting Tuition Chris Aldred a GAIC/APGAI/FFF qualified instructor has kindly offered to do another casting clinic this year, this will take place on 12th April. Chris will demonstrate and teach the casts required for getting the most out your river fishing. This is on a first come, first served basis. Contact Chris to book on Fly Tying Tuition Paul Ainsworth a GAIC qualified fly dresser will be holding fly tying lessons in the Sports Pavilion Corwen on 16th February and 16th March. 10am until 4pm Free for Juniors and 10 per session for adults. Contact Paul to book on or support@corwenanddistrictanglingclub.co.uk
Open Day 6th March This is now mandatory for new members A popular annual event which enables members new and old to familiarise themselves with the Club waters, methods of fishing, access points and parking. Two coaches will be provided on the day. Start off around 10am. Each will cover the upper or lower waters, returning at midday for a 30 minute break then changing waters. The usual finishing time is around 3pm. Members are advised to bring a drink and food for the break also boots or stout shoes as some riverside walking will be involved. If you intend coming kindly advise Harry Carr by 06/03/2014. Priority will be given to new members. Meet old Pavilion car park 9.30am Llangollen Maelor Exchange Tickets The club now has an exchange ticket agreement with Llangollen Maelor Angling Club. This is for Salmon fishing only on these dates, 3rd March to 31st August on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays only. To book a ticket contact Derek Bithell on In my previous address I eluded to the fact that we were developing a Juniors Programme during I m happy to report that due to the hard work and application of all concerned we held several extremely successful days with the youngsters we have more plans for the season ahead. On the canoeing front there has been an extremely worrying development. The Minister has announced that he wishes to allow open access to land and water in Wales he intends to issue a green paper in April. I don t need to outline the possible consequences of such future legislation which is why I m urging you all (friends and family included) to register your disapproval by visiting the SACC website the details of which are within this newsletter. I wish to thank you all for your co-operation during last season when various Beats were closed due to Masterclasses and the recent Hanak European Grayling Festival. The Masterclasses allow us to raise money for Club funds and the festival raises the Club s profile throughout Europe. A total of 614 Grayling were caught during the Festival a huge amount of fish (all returned) and testament to the reputation of the Dee as being the best river in Europe for Grayling. There are several instruction days planned during the coming season as detailed within my advice is to take advantage of these opportunities wherever possible. Finally, I would take the opportunity to thank the Committee for their support and to all who have attended the Work Parties or helped the Club in other capacities. On behalf of the Committee, I would like to wish you the very best during the 2014 season. Tight Lines Iwan
CADAC 2013 Your Salmon Fishery in Detail Salmon caught: 53 Welsh Dee Salmon Conservation Fund Salmon returned: 48 Salmon kept: 5 Salmon return rate: 91% Tagged fish: 11 Not tagged 42 Tagged Ratio: 1:4.2 Sea Trout caught: 20 Sea Trout returned: 14 Sea Trout kept: 6 Sea Trout return rate: 70% As a result of the recent decline in fish returning to spawn in the key tributaries of the Welsh Dee the Trust believes that a structured scientific report, investigating the historical and current release patterns from Llyn Celyn and their possible effects on the ecology of the upper catchment, needs to be undertaken. In order to fund the study and several other Welsh Dee Atlantic Salmon enhancement projects, the Trust is pleased to announce the launch of the Welsh Dee Salmon Conservation Fund. Raffle for a one off Salmon sculpture to raise funds for the study.
Sustainable Access Campaign Cymru We are a coalition of organisations that support a common sense approach to public access to land and water in Wales to benefit both users and landowners We believe that sustainable access to land and water must: 1. Be agreed locally between the relevant parties to reflect the particular local conditions and pressures rather than being generally imposed by national regulations; 2. Be managed to avoid conflict between users; 3. Respect the rights of people to continue to enjoy existing legitimate activities without disturbance; 4. Not cause unreasonable interference with the rights of landowners and lessees to enjoy their property; E.A Angler s Log Book All Salmon members of the club are now required to complete the log book sent out with membership tickets. These log books are a valuable tool in calculating the amount of fish that run the river. If you are lucky enough to fill this before the end of the season please contact Richard Cove on or for another. Please Report Salmon and Sea Trout catches to Mick Bates on within 7 days of capture. If no answer please leave a message with name, approx weight, beat, sex, date, if fish was tagged and if fish was released 5. Not damage the natural environment or the ecosystem services it provides by causing unreasonable damage to wildlife and habitats. Please go to the link below and register your support for this cause.
Club Guest Tickets It was passed at the Annual General Meeting that the club would now issue 2 guest tickets per member. The rules for these tickets are: Fishing on guest tickets is for Trout and Grayling only Maximum of 2 tickets per member per year The tickets will be dated and will be valid for that day only. Guests must be accompanied by member the ticket was issued to and they must be on the same beat. Member ticket issued to is responsible for the behaviour of their guest.
