29 Page 29 of 31 Planning Yonkers Beacon The Yonkers D/W BID, in conjunction with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), in a joint initiative called "FRESH OFF THE BARGE," with the Lower Hudson-Long Island Resource Conservation & Development Council (LHLI RC&D Council), is bringing fresh produce (and NY State Wines and cheeses) from the upstate farming regions of New York to Yonkers by an historic restored barge and tugboat. At a preliminary planning meeting at the USDA office in Ossining on February 27th, a group of individuals from Westchester and Rockland Counties got together with Capt. Steve Trueman, Mary Ann and Jack Schatzel, representatives of the North River Tugboat Museum in Kingston, to discuss the concept. The group is spearheaded by Joe Heller of the USDA, Vincent Tamagna, Rockland County Legislator and President of the LHLI RC&D Council, Joan Jennings of the Yonkers D/W BID, Anne Ferrell of Rainbeau Ridge Farm, George Sisco of the USDA NRCS in Highland, NY, Mike Turton of the Hudson Valley Agricultural Partnership and Cold Spring Farmer's Market, John Callaghan of the NY Barge Canal, Albany, Jose Simoes of Rockland County Department of Planning, and Sal Ruggiero, experienced in seafood production and transport.
30 Page 30 of 31 We held a July 12th fundraiser on the second floor of the Yonkers Recreation Pier and are planning a visit from the Floating Farmers' Market for Riverfest on September 19th and 20th and September 26th and 27th for educational tours. A gala cocktail party on September 19th will feature the best in upstate NY agricultural products prepared by seven master chefs: Adam Kay of Blue Hill in NYC (coming soon to Pocantico Hills), Dan Barber of Beacon Restaurant in NYC, Peter X. Kelly (whose five-star restaurant "Xaviar's" will be coming to the Yonkers Pier), Waldy Malouf (Beacon Restaurant and author of "The Hudson River Valley Cookbook"), John Pratt (Peter Pratt's Inn in Yorktown), David Reguiero (Zuppa in Yonkers), Ron Styzter of Encore Catering/Antun's and Avril Kaye of Avril Kaye Catering, Inc. of Scarsdale. Irene Hamburger and Adam Kaye of Blue Hill coordinated the foodstuffs and chefs for the cocktail party.
