1 Job Sheet 12 Feeding Conductors into Conduit OBJECTIVE To feed several conductors of type XHHW and size 14 AWG at the same time into 3/4" electrical metallic tubing (EMT). PROCEDURE 1. Perform the basic safety procedures listed in Appendix C of this manual. 2. Read reference 8 (see Appendix E) for more information on installing conductors in conduit systems. 3. To calculate the location of the bending mark for the 90 bend: Mark for 90 = 19" - TAKE-UP + SHRINK where TAKE-UP is 6" for the 3/4" EMT bender SHRINK is 1/16" due to the 1" deep,

Take a 5' long piece of 3/4" EMT to fabricate section 1 shown in Figure The distance between the lower dummy enclosure and the back of the bend is 19". To calculate the location of the bending mark for the 90 bend: Mark for 90 = 19" - TAKE-UP + SHRINK where TAKE-UP is 6" for the 3/4" EMT bender SHRINK is 1/16" due to the 1" deep, 10 offset Mark for 90 = 19" - 6" + 3/8" = 13 1/16" Draw a mark at 13 1/16" from the end of the conduit. 8. Insert the conduit in the bender shoe and align the arrow with the bending mark. Do NOT bend the conduit now. Festo Didactic

4 9. Draw a mark on the conduit at the end of the bender shoe. The 10 offset will have to be made between this mark and the end of the conduit. This is done to make sure the bender will not interfere with the offset while making the 90 bend. 10. The length available to make the 10 offset is approximately 11 3/16" between the end of the conduit and the end of the bender for the 90 bend. The distance between the two bending marks is 6" for a 1" deep, 10 offset. To center the offset, the first bending mark is located at 2 19/32" from the end of the conduit and the second bending mark is located at 2 19/32" + 6" = 8 19/32". Draw a mark at 2 19/32" and another one at 8 19/32" from the end of the conduit. 11. Make the two bends of the 10 offset first. Refer to Job Sheets 5 and 6 for the bending procedure. 12. Make the 90 bend. Refer to Job Sheet 7 for the bending procedure. Make sure you bend it so that the end of the offset is in-line with the opening in the lower dummy box. 13. The location of the bending marks for section 2 are the same as for section 1, except for the second 90 bend. Make sure you align the tip of the star with the mark for the second 90 bend. 14. Make the 10 offset bends first and then the two Interconnect the two dummy enclosures installed on the Mobile Workstation as shown in Figure 68. Notice that two EMT-to-EMT couplings and a small piece of conduit approximately 3 3/4" long are used to join the two sections of EMT that interconnect the dummy enclosures. Also notice that clamps, as the one shown in Figure 69, are used to securely fasten the EMT to the metal struts installed on the Mobile Workstation. 58 Festo Didactic

To do so: Gather 10 conductors and cut them so that there length is approximately one foot longer than the total length of sections 1 and 2.

5 Figure 69. Clamp used to securely fasten EMT to metal struts. 16. Install 10 conductors of type XHHW and size 14 AWG in the 3/4" EMT that interconnects the two dummy enclosures. To do so: Gather 10 conductors and cut them so that there length is approximately one foot longer than the total length of sections 1 and 2. Tape the ends together to avoid unraveling during assembly as shown in Figure 70. Figure 70. Tape the ends of the conductors to avoid unraveling. Take the 3/4" wire grip and insert the conductors up to the bend in the shoulder protector. Festo Didactic

Lubricate the shoulder protector with wire lubrication compound as shown in Figure 72.

7 Insert the hook of the fish tape at one end of the conduit and push it until it comes out as shown in Figure 73. Figure 73. Feed the fish tape into the conduit. Festo Didactic

8 Attach a pull line to the hook of the fish tape and pull the fish tape out of the conduits until the pull line comes out on the other side as shown in Figure 74. Figure 74. Feed the pull line into the conduit. 62 Festo Didactic

Attach the wire grip to the pull line, insert the wire grip into the conduit and pull the pull line until the wire grip comes completely out of the conduit as shown in Figure 75.

Feed the wire grip into the conduit. Remove the conductors from the wire grip. 17. Ask the instructor to check and approve your work. 18. Remove the conductors that you installed in the conduit.
