TIIE Proprietors, in submitting to their Subscribers and the Public the present (being the Fifth) Edition of the Six HOME COUNTIES DIRECTORY, trust that it may be found to be equal in accuracy to the previous Editions. Several additions have been made to the present volume : lists of Hundreds and Poor Law Unions have been included in the Topography of each County; it is stated under each Parish in what Hundred, Union and County Court District it is situate, as well as the Diocese, Archdeaconry and Rural Deanery; and the College and University of every Beneficed Clergyman have been given. The Post Office Savings Banks have been noticed; the names of the Parish Clerks are given under each Parish ; and lists of Farm Bailiffs of gentlemen farming their own land have been added. / The bulk of the Directory has again increased considerably: the Third Edition consisted of 1,420 pages; the Fourth had increased to 1,752 pages; and the present contains 1,986 pages. The value of the Directory, however, will depend principally on the fact that it has been most carefully corrected, every parish having been personally visited by the Agents during the last six months. "V o o ±1i A., I ESSEX is one of the metropolitan shires, and takes its name from the commonwealth of the East Saxons (one of the English hordes which settled in South Britain), and of which Middlesex, London, and Hertfordshire afterwards formed part. After the Euskardians and Celts had been driven out, it was held by the Belg-ic tribe of the Trinobantes until the Roman inroad. Of the Romans it was a great seat, and here was their city of Camulodunum. The Welsh again becoming masters, were driven out by the East Saxons. The chief clans concerned in the settlement were the Tilling^ Hailing, Denning, Thurring, Benning, Billing, Horning, Manning', Totting, Bucking*, and Dunning, being the same as those engaged in the settlement of East Anglia. In S&3 it came under the sway of the West Saxons under Egbert, though more than once given up to the Danes. In the great Civil War Essex sided with the Parliament, and formed a powerful federation. The shire is of an irregular shape, being In its greatest length, from north-east to south-west, 63 miles. It contains 1,533 square miles, or 1,000,549 acres, being the tenth English shire for size. In 1851 its population was 369,318, being an increase of 24,339 over The number of houses in 1851 was 77,480 ; of males, 185,399 ; of females, 183,919. On the east nnd south-east it is bounded by the North Sea j on the south by the Thames, which lies between it and Kent; on the west by the Lea against Middlesex, and by the IS tort against Hertfordshire ; on the north by the Cambridgeshire border ; and on the north-east by the Stour against Suffolk, Thus there is a navigable belt from Sudbury round by sea, and so to Bishop Stortford. On the east the shore is broken by the deep friths and creeks of the Stour, Colne, Blackwater, Croucb, and Thames. The Thames flows from London to the North Sea, having several quays, but no great haven on the Essex shore. The Lea, and its head, the Stort, are navigable, passing through Bishop Stortford, Harlow, and Waltham Abbey. The Boding rises in East on park, and runs for about 36 miles past Ongar, to liford, where it becomes navigable, and, passing Barking, joins the Thames* The Bourne brook, 12 miles long, falls into the Thames at Dagenham. The Ingerbourne rises in South Weald, and falls in near Rainham ; the Marditch, 12 miles long, forms a creek at Purfleet. The Crouch, 25 miles long, waters south-east Essex, and is navigable from Hull bridge to the North Sea ; Bimiham is its port; and the Broomhill is a creek 10 miles long, and navigable tor 7 miles to near Rochford. The Clielmer, 46 miles long, rising near Debden, passes Dunmow and Chelmsford, where it is made navigable, and flows to Maldon, its port, receiving the Ter, 13 miles long, the Wid and Cann, 14 miles long, and the Sand on brook, 10 miles long. Near Mahlon it joins the Blackwater, which has for its feeder the Podsbroolc. The Colne, 35 miles long, rises near Bird brook, becomes navigable at Colchester, and, receiving the Iioman river, flows into the North Sea. The Holland creek fails into the North Sea at Little Holland. The Stour is about 50 miles long, becomes navigable at Sudbury, and passes the ports ofmanningtree and Harwich to the North Sea. In the north-west the Cam and Slade brooks pass into Cambridgeshire. The shire has much rich meadow grounds on the shores t of the brooks, and marsh lands on the friths and creeks. On the shore are many marsh islands, like those of Holland ; Canvey, Foulness, Wallasea, Mersea, Horsea, Haven gore, and Potten, are the greatest. Much of the shore is sheltered against the tides and storms by dikes and sea-walls, as it lies low. The inland is billy and well timbered. The highest hills of the London clay are High Beech, near Waltham Abbey, 760 feet high ; Danbury, 700 feet high ; Tiptree Heath, near Witham, 700 feet high, and Laingdon hills, 620 feet high. It appears that, next to the Church of England, the most powerful sects are the Independents, and then the Baptists and Methodists. Essex, of which Chelmsford is the assize town, is in the Home Circuit, and in the district of the London Court of Bankrupty. Part of Becontree hundred, viz., Barking, East Hain, West Ham, Little Ilford, Low Levton, Walthamstow, Wanstead, St. Mary Woodford, and Cbingford, is within the bounds of the Central Criminal Court and Metropolitan Police, being suburbs of the metropolis. It is in two divisions, each returning two members to Parliament North, Essex, with a population of 189,435, of which Braintrec is the seat of election, and South Essex, with a population of 179,883, of which Chelmsford is the seat of election. The shire forms nineteen hundreds and one liberty. Each division contains the following hundreds : The Northern Division Clavering, Dunmow, Fresh well, Hinckford, Lexden, Tending, Thurstable, Uttlesford, Winstree, and Witham ; and the Southern Division Barstable, Beacontree, Chafford, Chelmsford, Dengie, Harlow, Ongar, Rochford, and Waltham ; and of the Liberty of Havering; and four boroughs Colchester, Maldon, Harwich, and Saffron Walden; the first three are parliamentary, and return two members each. There are seventeen Unions Billericay, Braintree, Chelmsford, Colchester, Dunmow, Epping, Halstead, West Ham, Lexden and Winstree, Maldon, Ongar, Orsett, Rochford, Romford, Saffron Walden, Tend ring, and Witham, besides townships under other shires. There are about 500 townships, of which 400 are parishes. The shire is ecclesiastically under the Bishop of Rochester, in the two archdeaconries of Colchester and Essex, with the exception of ten metropolitan parishes, which are under the Bishop of London, and Ballingdon, a suburb Sudbury, in Suffolk, which is in the diocese of Ely, There are several good towns, as Colchester, Chelmsford, Braintree, Harwich, Maldon, Barking, Saffron Walden, Witham, Halstead, Romford, Brentwood, and Southend, besides market and small towns. A mill has also lately been erected at Chelmsford ior its manufacture. Some of the finest moire-antiques are also made at Colchester. The minerals worked up are chalk for lime, septaria for Roman cement, clay for bricks, flint for guns, and salt made from the sea, in all of which there is some trade- Seeds are grown at Tillingham. The towns on the shores are very busy in the oyster and other fisheries, and in shipping corn, coals, and timber. The Colne fishery is of great value and importance, It furnishes the finest native oysters, and belongs to Colchester, that town deriving an income of about 700 a year from the licenses annually granted to dredgermen j and there is no doubt the revenue derived from this source might be most materially increased. The seaports of the county are Manaingtree, Harwich, Brightlingsea, Colchester, Salcott, Maldon, Brad well, Burnham, Rochford, Wakering, Southend, Leigh, Grays, PurHeet, and Barking. The Victoria docks and the Metropolitan steam docks are in PJaidtow level, and a line connects Thames Haven with the Tilbury line. Steamers run from London to Harwich, and communicate with purfleet, Grays, Tilbury, Southend, and Walton. Southend and Tilbury are great steamboat stations. Steamers go up the Orwell from Harwich to Ipswich. Harwich, Southend and Walton are bathingplaces. At Waltham Abbey are Government powder works ; at Purfleet, powder stores ; at Warley, the East India Barracks; at Tilbury, a garrison; and at Shoeburyness is an extensive practice-ground for Government artillery of the largest calibre. The railways of Essex belong to the Eastern Counties direction ; one great branch, under the name of the Cambridge line, going from London north, by Waltham Abbey. Hoddesdon (with a branch to Hertford), Bishop S tort ford, and Saffron Walden, to Cambridge, Newmarket, the north and east of England; and the other north-east, by Ilford, Romford, Brentwood, Ingatestone, Chelmsford, Witllam,and Colchester, to Ipswich, with branches to Maldon, Braintree, Sudbury, Manningtree, Harwich, Hadleigh, Halstead, and Castle Hedingham. In the south-west, a short line runs from Stratford to a station called North Woolwich, on the Thames, and another from Stratford to Harking, Purfleet, Grays, Tilbury, Leigh, and Southend. The Tendring railway, from Colchester to Wivenhoe, is expected to be open in August. The principal stations on the Tilbury line are, Plaistow, East Ham, Barking, 8; Little Ilford, Rainham, 13; Purfleet, 16}; Grays/20^; Tilbury, 23 ; Low street, Stanfordle-Hope, Pitsea, Benfieet, Leigh and Southend. There is also the Colne valley railway, commencing at the Chapel junction, on the Sudbury branch line. [ESSEX.] BBDHAM is a town and parish, mentioned in " Domesday Survey," which is on the navigable river Stour, 6 miles north-nor tli-east of Colchester, 4 west of Manning tree, 13 south-west from Ipswich, 58 from London, and 3 from the Ardleigh station on the Eastern Union railway, and in the Lexden union and hundred, Rochester diocese, Colchester archdeaconry, Dedliam deanery, and is in the Colchester county court district. It had formerly a market, and in the reign of Richard II, was famous as one of the chitif seats of the clothing trade. A fair is held on Easter Tuesday, and here was formerly a market on Tuesdays. The area of the parish is 2,551 acres, and the population in 1861 was 1,734. The town consists of one street, and is situated in a picturesque valley. The church of the Virgin Mary is a large building- in the Perpendicular style, with a fine tower containing 8 bells. POST OFFICE XEYTCH, or XlOW Peyton, and, a&eywoeff- STOM3E, LEYTON 7 or Low Leyton, is a parish adjoining Walthamstow and Stratford 5 pleasantly situated on [JIG banks of tbe river Lea, from which its name is derived3 it is in the bishopric of London, London archdeaconry., and Barking deanery, South Essex, Beaeontree hundred, West Ham rmion/and the jurisdiction of the Central Criminal Court, and in tho Metropolitan (N.E.) suburban district. It formerly belonged to King Harold, ami was a Roman establishment, supposed to be the silc of tlio ancient Durolitum; many Roman antiquities hare been discovered, as foundations of buildings, a subterranean erched gateway, coins, &c. It U 5.; miles from London, and is a station of the Eastern Counties railway. The area of this suburban parish is 2,241 acres; the population (including 572 in the West Ham Union Workhouse) in 1831 was 4,704 (including Leytonstone). The church of St. Mary is a small plain brick building; it contains tombs of Strype, the antiquary, who was vicar bere for nearly 70 year.-; Goring, Earl of Norwich; William Bowyer, the celebrated printer ; Sir Michael ILIekes, &c. KXOTTS GREEN and Lea Bridge are the names of localities in the parish, which were formerly treated as hamlets, but they arc now portions of the whole. At RUCKIIOLTS, obscured by trees, are the remains of ancient entrenchments, with a square double embankment, 100 feet diameter, secured by a moat. TKMPLE MILLS, on the Lea, are said to have belonged to the Knights Templars. The whole are now demolished, and the Waterworks supply their place. This is in the Eastern postal district. LKY"TONSTONE is a hamlet of Leyton, running parallel to Lev ton, with man v line suburban villas. On the 2nd U / f February, 1845, it was constituted an ecclesiastical district. [ESSEX.] # STRATFORD,or STRATFORD LANGTHORNE,the ford of the street or Roman way from London to Colchester, is a suburb of London, and lies on the east side of the navigable river Lea and on the Eastern Counties railway, of which the station is in Angel lane, whence the Northern and Eastern railway, and the Black wall and Woolwich branch diverge. It is 3J miles from Shoreditcli, is a ward of the parish of West Ham, and in the union of that name, diocese of London, South Essex, and is also a metropolitan district, in the jurisdiction of the Central Criminal Court and Metropolitan Police, and in the Bow county court district. It is united to Stratfbrd-le-Bow by a bridge over the Lea. In 1851 the population was 10,586. The district church, dedicated to St. John, built: in 1833, is at the junction of the old Newmarket and Colchester roads; the Rev. William Holloway is perpetual curate. There is a police station at West Ham. On the river are flour mills, chemical and print works, distilleries, and other factories. Under Queen Mary I,, a man and woman were burnt to death here for high treason and heresy. In 1692 George Edwards, the naturalist, was born here; and here, also, he was buried. In excavating the ground for the railway, astone coffin was discovered, close to the surface of the earth, near Maryland Point.
