1 MARCH 2015 March Meeting Date Change and Auction The March meeting of the Penobscot Fly Fishers has been moved to the second Wednesday of March (3/11) to accommodate the Penobscot County Conservation Association's preparations for their annual Eastern Maine Sportsmen's Show which will be held March 68 at the University of Maine's New Balance Field House. We will return to our normal meeting schedule of the first Wednesday of the month in April. The program for the March meeting will be a slight departure from our usual guest speakers. We have received a fair amount of donated fly fishing and fly tying items that we need to get back out into circulation among the fly fishing community. We will use our March meeting to hold an auction do that. A sample representation of the items that will be auctioned off can be found on our website on the Home page. Items will be available for perusing starting at 5:30 pm and the bidding will start approximately at 6:30. As usual, a family style dinner will be served at 6:00 for those members who would like to purchase one. Take this opportunity to stock up!

2 From the President's Fly Box Well another Cabin Fever Reliever is now history, and what a great show it was! The weather was perfect, Brewer Auditorium was filled with great exhibitors, and an enthusiastic visiting crowd. What a great success for Ivonne Vazquez as her first show as chair of the Cabin Fever Reliever committee. As she confided to me during the show, it could not have been done without the enthusiastic help of many contributing hands: from the committee who's experience with previous shows kept things on track, to those who sold ads and promoted the show, to the exhibitors who dedicated a weekend, and those who helped with setup, staffing, and clean up. My heartfelt thanks goes out to all who made this show the great success it was. We truly provided a great event for our surrounding community to enjoy. As with anything that we do as a club whether it is Cabin Fever Reliever, the fly tying classes, Fly Fishing 101, or our summer fishing outings, they would not be possible without the efforts of the many members who volunteer their time and expertise. Many thanks are extended to all who take part in putting these events together. ED Intermediate Fly Tying Beginning Monday (March 9th), there will be 4 weeks of intermediate fly tying classes offered at the Penobscot County Conservation Association club house from 68 pm. As in the past, it will be in an ala carte format where you do not have to sign up for all four sessions, but choose which ones you want to attend. Currently we are planning to offer an evening of spinning deer hair on March 9th with Cubby sharing some of his deer hair spinning secrets; followed by a couple of dry flies (Parachute Adams and one other) on March 16th with Joe Beaulieu; Mike Curtis will show us how to use foam to tie a grass hopper and a dahlberg diver on March 23rd; and finishing up with Rob Dunnett getting us ready for ice out by tying single and tandem hook streamers on March 30th. The classes are free to club members. There is a 10 fee per class for nonmembers. All materials and hooks will be provided. Students should plan to bring basic tools and thread. FlyaThon Only two more opportunities (the March and April meetings) to donate flies to this year's PFF Casting for Recovery FlyaThon. Take this next month of thawing out to avoid the mud by spending some time at the tying bench and whipping out some flies for this great program that provides support to women recovering from cancer. All of your flies will be sent directly to Bonnie Holding for use in supporting the Casting for Recovery program in Maine. The flies will be used for fishing at retreats and for fund raising. If you have any questions, contact Ed Dailide at edailide@wildblue.net or Brush Up Your Fly Fishing Skills Join the Penobscot Fly Fishers at their Fly Fishing 101 Class on April 26th. The class will be offered at the PCCA Club House, 570 N. Main Street, Brewer, ME from 9:00 to 4:00. It will include sessions on Bugs & Flies and Equipment & Knots, as well as a Casting Clinic. Cost is 20 per person, which includes use of equipment and lunch. Class size is limited to 24 seats for personalized attention so do not delay in signing up. To sign up, contact Rob Dunnett at or treasurer@penobscotflyfishers.com. Participants under 18 will need parental /guardian approval and those under 16 must be accompanied by a paid adult. Minimum age is 12.

3 A few notes from the Events Corner Wow what a winter! I hope everyone has had an opportunity to get outside and enjoy a winter activity or two. Perhaps a winter hike, ice fishing trip, or maybe like me, some long hours spent by the woodstove in front of the tying vise. And how about that Cabin Fever Reliever Show? A huge round of applause for Ivonne, Ernie, and the rest of the CFR committee and Club Members who made the show another memorable Event. Speaking of tying, thanks to all Club Members who participated in this year s Fly Swap Event. I am always impressed by the quality of flies that our Senior Club Members turn out on a routine basis. This year s collection will be a welcome addition to anyone s fly box. And for those of you who did not participate, there will be one more chance to own one of these beauties complete with a fly box! One and only one 2015 Fly Swap Collection will be up for bid during the March General Meeting Auction. Spring is coming! Our Spring Fishing Events Planning Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 8 th, 5:30 Blackbeard s Family Fun Park, 339 Odlin Rd, Bangor. (Across from Howard Johnson s). 4 Thoughts from the Professor Vol. 3 Chapter 6 This month I am reviewing a couple of items from the Library. The first is a DVD I Want to Learn How to Fly Fish with Dave Long This is a DVD for someone who has never fly fished or who knows very little about fly fishing and fly casting. Overall the information provided is fairly sound and it covers the basic techniques of fly fishing. In addition to basic fly fishing techniques related to dry fly fishing it also includes some instruction for Nymphing and mending lines and various casts. The main feature of this video is that the presentations are fairly simple, easy to follow and understand. One other feature of this video are the beautiful streams that he uses to show the techniques. As this is an older video there is one point that needs to be clarified. In the video he talks about wading boots and the use of felt on the boots. It is generally accepted that we do not use felt and in some states it is banned. This is because of the belief that invasive plants and microbes that more readily attach to felt. If you have an interest in Spey casting there is a separate section on this area of fly fishing which is most interesting and useful. The second is a DVD called The One produced by Grey Ghost Productions. This is pure and simple a DVD largely about fishing in various locations. The chapters include Whistler, BC, Rapid River in Maine, East Outlet, Maine, Upper Dam, Patagonia, The Brotherhood, Their One and Project Healing Waters. What you can appreciate about this is that it has the feel of the old time shows. It s kind of like a friend doing a personal video where there is not that real polished performer look to the show. At the same time the video production of the show is very good. The videos include a little downeast humor, often something about each of the areas being fished and some of the interactions between pals that fish, hunt and simply love the outdoors. The music behind these shows may not always be to your liking and at times somewhat loud but overall it is professional in the presentation. What is absolutely outstanding is the video and the scenery of the places they visit. The sections on Healing waters and The Brotherhood lend themselves to the friend talking to a friend aspect of this video. Some of it may be a little corny and laid back but overall this was a very enjoyable video. So until next (hopefully on the water) time. Tight Lines From the Professor

11 Minutes PFF Board of Directors Meeting February 18, 2015 Present: Jere Armstrong, Wayne Ashley, Mike Curtis, Ed Dailide, Rob Dunnett, Bud Farwell, Mike Hegarty, Mike Hartt, Dick Jagels, Hank Metcalf. Absent: Andrew Donovan Guest: Burt Flower, Dick McCrum, Ivonne Vazquez. Meeting called to order at 5:55 PM. The Cabin Fever Reliever Committee Chairwoman Ivonne Vazquez reported there are 7 speakers, 43 exhibitors, press releases are ready, 145 donated items have been received, ad revenue is down from last year s receipts, and PCCA is again providing an Old Town canoe for a raffle. Volunteers will begin to set up at 5 PM on Friday, February M/S to accept the Secretary s Minutes of 01/21/15. Motion passed. 2. M/S to accept the Budget Comparison 1/31/15. Motion passed. M/S to accept the January P & L statement. Motion passed. M/S The 500 Marcus Hale scholarship be sent to the Maine s Youth Fish & Game Association. Passed. Treasurer Rob requested input from the club with suggestions to include in next year s budget. 3. Committee updates: A. Wayne reported for the Events Committee. The IF & W permit has been received for the Father s Day Derby at Brewer Lake on June 21. The PCCA Family Day is June 6. B. Basic Fly Tying Class Committee reported that will come regarding details of the fourweek intermediate tying classes. 4. Old Business: A. The March 11 General Meeting will be an extensive auction of fly tying materials and nearly new books. It will be open to the public at 5:30 PM. At 6 PM the usual meal will be served followed by the auction. Four volunteers will arrange the auction items at 5 PM on the 10 th. B. The new sound system was used at the fly tying class on February 16 and reported to be awesome. 5. New Business: A. Distributing the monthly newsletter via USPS is expensive. The secretary was asked to explore alternatives with those members who receive mailed copies. B. Basic Fly Fishing 101 will be chaired by Mike Hegarty. The oneday event on April 26 at PCCA will cover typical topics from aquatic insects to fly casting. Noon lunch will be included. The cost will be 20 per person and is limited to 24 participants. 6.
