4 Reading the River! 2002 About Reading the River: The title Reading the River watershed workshop was inspired by conservationist Also Leopold s concept of reading the landscape to discover and understand the forces that shape it. During a six-day journey down the Licking River, science teachers will be challenged to view the river with new eyes, making observations and learning about the biology, geology, land use, history and the culture of the Licking River watershed. Following their journey, the teachers will then take what they have learned back to their schools and classrooms, viewing them with their new vision, and inspiring their students to look at and appreciate the world of which they are a part in new and exciting ways.

54 Data - Biological and Habitat Biological Index The biological quality index number was obtained by a simplified approach to stream water quality evaluation through a collection and analysis of key indicator species of macroinvertebrates such as aquatic insects and other life forms. The procedures used are those outlined in the publication, Watershed Watch Biological Stream Assessment, (Kentucky Division of Water, KY Watershed Watch Program, Version 1.0, 2000). The biological quality assessment scale ratings are excellent, good, fair, and poor.

55 Data - Biological and Habitat Habitat Assessment The habitat quality assessment score is obtained through a visual assessment as specified in Watershed Habitat Assessment Protocols (Kentucky Division of Water, KY Watershed Watch Program, Version 2.0, 1999). As stated in this manual, the quality or instream and riparian habitat influences the structure and function of the aquatic community in a stream. Key features that are assessed are: Epifaunal substrate/available cover Embeddedness Velocity/depth regime Sediment deposition Channel flow status Channel alteration Frequency of riffles Bank stability Vegetative protection Riparian vegetative zone width The condition categories are optimal, suboptimal, marginal, and poor.
