2 Antlerless deer license application period: July 15 to Aug. 15 Some areas of the state have a limited number of antlerless deer license applications available, making applying for that deer management unit important for some. Private-land applications do require a landowner phone number, so have it ready. Young hunters, 16 and under, can buy antlerless deer licenses over the counter July 15- Aug. 15. Don't miss out! Any leftover licenses that remain will go on sale Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. For more details about antlerless deer hunting and to buy an application online, visit michigan.gov/ deer. Attention: Range Users Club range rule 2.22 states: Always police the range, any range, and clean up brass and mess after you re finished. This includes Archery, Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun ranges. Some members and/or guests are not cleaning up after themselves when leaving the club ranges. The main violation is large amounts of cartridge cases left in piles on the ranges. It is your club and your responsibility to clean up your brass after shooting. 3 CAMPGROUND LOTS AVAILABLE Several lots in the Berrien County Sportsman s Club Campground are now available. The lots have electricity and campers have access to running water and toilets. The campground offers a dump station. The vacancies will be filled on a firstcome-first-served basis. The cost is $85 per month or $1,020 per year. To advertise in the next newsletter, Contact Cean at editor@bcsportsmansclub.com Women Only CPL Class The Berrien County Sportsman s Club will be offering a women only CPL Class in September, Our team of NRA trained instructors will offer this two day course for women that are interested in obtaining a Michigan Concealed Pistol License. We encourage you to bring co-workers, friends, or family members to join you in this class. The cost for this class is $120 ($100 for BCSC members). The class will be held on the grounds of the Sportsman s Club on Sept. 27 and 29. On Sept. 27 (Thursday) we will meet from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. This evening will include basic pistol instruction followed by practical indoor range time. (Handguns and ammunition will be supplied for the Thursday session.) On Sept. 29 (Saturday) we will meet from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. with indoor instruction and outdoor range time. Please bring your handgun and 100 rounds of factory ammunition to the Saturday event. If you do not have a handgun, 22 caliber handguns will be provided for range use. 5 NO VEHICLES ARE TO BE DRIVEN ONTO THE RIFLE RANGES. THANK YOU. BERRIEN COUNTY SPORTSMAN S CLUB RANGES The Berrien County Sportsman s Club includes a variety of ranges to meet your shooting needs. This includes indoor and outdoor archery, indoor and outdoor rifle and pistol, along with black powder, 25, 50, 75, and 100 yard ranges, handgun tactical and bowling pin ranges. A 200-yard rifle range is available for special club events only. Michigan Gun Owners was established in 2002 as a website and incorporated in 2003 with the mission to educate the public and encourage grass roots activism on a state-wide level through various outreach programs and a popular community forum on the internet. Michigan Gun Owners has become Michigan s fastest growing, grass roots gun rights advocacy organization. NOTICE TO MEMBERS The Berrien County Sportsman s Club does not allow slide fires, trigger bumps, or any actions that attempt to mimic a fully automatic firearm. Thank you for your cooperation. CMP Shoot Wrap Up The first CMP Shoot of the year for the Berrien County Sportsman's Club was held on Sunday May 6 and we had six shooters. We even had a lady shooter and five men. A lot of fun was had by all. We shot for about two hours and some real fine scores were achieved. Our next shoot will not be until July 15 and that will be a "Rattle Battle." We had a chance to see the new shooting walls that were installed, and they are superb. Due to insufficient volunteers a private contractor was employed. So, I am not sure if everyone has seen the new walls, so stop down and see the job that was done. They should last for many, many years. Just one other thing when you use the ranges, "PLEASE" pick up your brass, if they are left, they can be unsightly and easy to slip on on some of the ranges. In the grass they can cause damage to the mower blade, and possibly become projectiles. Treat the range like you would your "Man Cave" or your home. Have a Great Month, and shoot straight and SAFE. 6 IDPA shoots are the second Saturday of each month. Shooting runs from 8 a.m. to noon. Come on out and see what it s all about. NEW MEMBERS, BRING YOUR PISTOLS New members! Come on out with your pistol on Thursday nights and enjoy shooting with some of the old members. We would like to meet you and have you use our indoor pistol and rifle range. We will help you with your shooting skills for when you decide to take the club s monthly CPL class. If you are not a current CPL holder, you will need to be sure to separate your ammunition and firearm and place these two items in different parts of your vehicle when transporting your firearm. Firearm Safety Rules and Guidelines Course DNR Southwest Lower Peninsula Fishing Report St. Joseph: Boat anglers were catching lots of coho in waters well past 100 feet deep when trolling spoons. Lake trout and a few coho were taken in 100 feet with spin-doctors and flies. Pier anglers were catching decent numbers of steelhead with an alewife under a bobber. Perch fishing has been up and down as the fish seem scattered. There were a few nice catches in 40 feet north of the piers and in 35 feet south of the piers. St. Joseph River: The repairs at the Berrien Springs Dam have been completed and the water level in Lake Chapin is back to normal. Over the past week, a couple steelhead moved upstream through the Berrien Springs fish ladder. South Haven: Boat anglers found salmon fishing slow with only a few caught around the pier heads when trolling spoons. Pier anglers caught steelhead on shrimp and alewife though the fishery was slowing down. No perch reports. Black River: Some steelhead were caught by those casting spinners. Grand Haven: Trout and salmon were caught on orange, blue and green spoons 30 to 70 feet down in 75 to 150 feet. Good numbers of lake trout were caught on yellow spin-glo s within five feet of the bottom. Pier anglers caught a couple steelhead on shrimp or while casting orange spoons. Grand River at Grand Rapids: Those fishing down near the mouth were getting some summer steelhead so the fish could be up this far soon. Boat anglers were getting some nice walleye. Try crawlers or leeches. Bluegills can still be found in the bayous. Grand River at Lansing: The smallmouth bass action was good at the North Lansing Dam when using minnows under a bobber. Fish were also caught at the Smithville Dam in Eaton Rapids and at Fitzgerald Park in Grand Ledge. Some were using rattle traps or rubber worms. Nice channel cats were caught above the North Lansing Dam. Muskegon: A fair number of trout and salmon were caught 30 to 70 feet down in 80 to 150 feet. Green and orange spoons have worked well. No pier report. Muskegon Lake: Some walleye were caught by those trolling but most of the fish were undersize. Smallmouth bass were caught around docks, off the State Park and in the channel by those using leeches and crawlers. Bluegills were on the beds off the State Park and other shallow areas around the lake. Whitehall: Boats trolling 30 to 70 feet down in 90 to 150 feet caught Chinook and steelhead on blue, green and orange spoons. Pier anglers caught steelhead while casting spoons or still-fishing, 6 7
