Two of the four hands of Poker were won by Ryan, making him the Top Poker Shot for the match. Ryan is a new member and this was his first shoot congratulation s to him. Millions of acres are open to public hunting in Michigan, and there are many more locations to hunt. Use mi.gov/mihunt, an interactive map application, to plan adventures anywhere around the state. If you have questions, call a DNR Customer Service Center or contact the DNR Wildlife DNR Southwest Lower Peninsula Fishing Report St. Joseph: Anglers found chinook and lake trout in 75 to 160 feet and deeper. The fish were scattered so anglers are working a little harder to find them. Perch fishing was fair for those drifting in 50 feet. Pier fishing was slow. South Haven: Had good salmon fishing in 110 to 120 feet. Most were using white paddles and spin-doctors with green flies. Perch were caught in 55 feet but they are scattered so fishing was a little more difficult. Grand Haven: Boat anglers caught salmon 70 to 140 feet down in 120 to 220 feet. A flasher/fly combination worked best with green or white flies. Fish were also taken on yellow or green meat rigs. The thermocline was about 70 to 80 feet down. Smaller boats are fishing inside 120 to 150 feet and the bigger boats are going out deeper when the weather allows. Most of the fish caught were salmon. Pier fishing was slow. Muskegon: Salmon were caught 60 to 140 feet down in 120 to 240 feet on a white flasher with green or white flies 7

9 Salmon fishing is heating up on Lake Michigan Lake Michigan has had a tough couple of years, especially as it relates to fishing for salmon. After a few years with a low population, fishing really picked up this past spring. Anglers on the lake experienced limit catches of coho and Chinook salmon thanks to some improvement in the numbers of bait fish available. Lake Michigan has experienced some historic low bait levels in recent years due to harsh winter conditions, less available nutrients resulting from invasive quagga mussels, and over predation from salmon and trout. But Mother Nature, working as she normally does, provided more moderate temperatures the last couple of winters that have allowed bait fish like alewife, smelt, bloaters and lake herring to reproduce and survive. "The 2015 and 2016 year classes of bait are much better than previous years," said the DNR's Lake Michigan Basin Coordinator Jay Wesley. "These bait fish are helping to support the improved salmon fishery this year." Natural resources managers responsible for Lake Michigan have been aggressive to balance the number of predators in the lake. Recognizing both the recent low bait numbers and the increase in Chinook salmon and lake trout natural reproduction, professional managers have reduced the stocking of Chinook salmon, lake trout and brown trout throughout the lake. Please sign in at the clubhouse when coming to shoot, fish or use the archery range, as per the club "Sign In Policy. Shooters should note the type of ammunition and Report All Poaching RAP Hotline: Red Arrow Highway Stevensville, MI "There have been four significant lake-wide stocking reductions going back to 1999 to compensate for changing bait numbers and 9

10 It s your year to grouse and woodcock hunt With grouse and woodcock hunting season openers just around the corner, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources reminds hunters that now is the time to make plans to spend some days in the woods. This is your year for a fall adventure, said Al Stewart, DNR upland game bird specialist. The 18 GEMS across the Upper and northern Lower Peninsula are waiting for you and your shotgun to flush a few birds. GEMS (Grouse Enhanced Management Sites) are large blocks of land, open to hunting, that have hunter walking trails winding throughout. The sites are managed to have young timber, which makes them ideal places to hunt and see wildlife due to the thick cover and great food sources provided. Michigan is nationally known for great ruffed grouse and woodcock hunting, but with millions of acres of public land to explore, hunters might not know how to get started, Stewart Hunting outside of Michigan this fall? Be aware of NEW regulations For those who plan to hunt outside of Michigan this fall, it is important to note that regulations related to the importation of harvested cervids (such as deer, elk or moose) have changed substantially. Hunters who harvest a cervid in any other state or province can bring back only the following cervid parts into Michigan: Hides Deboned meat Quarters (legs that do not have any part of the spinal column or head attached) Finished taxidermy products Cleaned teeth Antlers Antlers attached to a skullcap cleaned of brain and muscle tissue Hunters need to realize that the new importation regulations apply to any location they hunt outside Michigan, not just those states and provinces that have chronic wasting disease, said Chad Stewart, Michigan Department of Natural Resources deer and elk specialist. These changes have been put in place in hopes of keeping potential cases of CWD from unintentionally being brought into Michigan. CWD is a contagious neurological disease affecting members of the Cervidae family, including deer, elk and moose. It attacks the central nervous system of infected animals and results in emaciation, abnormal behavior and loss of bodily functions. There is no recovery. The infectious agents causing CWD are prions, which are nonliving proteins that can 10
