The Public Library at Tellico Village Our Vision To be the center for lifelong learning, providing the community with access to the information that will fulfill personal growth, cultural enrichment and knowledge in all fields of interest. Our Mission To provide, maintain, and improve the materials, resources, and guidance for lifelong learning and knowledge in an environment conducive to the needs of the community. Programs Provided by your Organization: The Friends of the Tellico Village Library, Inc. (The Friends) serve the residents of Loudon and surrounding counties. We ve changed the name of our library to The Public Library at Tellico Village to reflect our interest in actively expanding our service base. In our fiscal year 2012, we had 6,101 registered users and the largest circulation in Loudon County, but only 324 users lived outside of our local community of Tellico Village. Several outreach programs are planned which will serve the readers in our geographic area. Our circumstances are different from most other public libraries. The Public Library at Tellico Village is supported by the non-profit corporation known as The Friends of the Tellico Village Library. Ownership of the building and most of the operating expenses of the library, the collection, and the programs are the financial responsibility of The Friends. This unique relationship of support for a public library exists because the library is located in a rural setting, outside of a municipality, and is therefore without resources from a city tax base.

2 Describe opportunities for Volunteers to contribute to your organization: Volunteers and Friends are literally the life blood of our public library. Ongoing opportunities to volunteer at various levels of commitment abound at the library from circulation desk and The Friends Board of Directors positions to special events such as the annual used book sale, and from repairing worn books to processing new books into the collection. New volunteers will be needed with the startup of the programs for which we are seeking funding, as well as other programs being planned. Some of the positions will be in the areas of assisting in program development, arranging speakers, selecting supplemental materials, facilitating programs, soliciting gifts/prizes. Basically, anyone with experience or desire to delve into areas related to education, libraries, teaching, or adult and children s programming will be able to participate as much or as little as she/he wishes. Describe specific needs, programs or items for which requested funds would be utilized in 2013: The Board of the Friends of Tellico Village Library greatly appreciates the GFWC- Tellico Village for commending the work being done by our organization in support of The Public Library at Tellico Village; and we thank you for the invitation to present an award request for your consideration. The Friends have selected two major programs directly companionable with your core values of encouraging literacy, lifelong learning, and promoting citizenship and community: Funding Request One 2013 Children and Adult Summer Library Reading Program and Funding Request Two Mary Ann Bork Courtyard Memorial Benches. Funding Request One To fulfill the goal of expanding outreach programming in our geographic area, The Friends will initiate the 2013 Children and Adult Summer Library Reading Program, during June, July and August. All segments of the program will be free to participants. The need for programs that support and encourage children to read during the summer months is well documented and was summarized in Scholastic. Research shows that children who do not read four or more age-appropriate books over the summer are more likely to fall victim to summer slide loss of skills. Such losses are cumulative, creating a wider gap each year. It is estimated that summer slide accounts for as much as 85% of the reading achievement gap between lower income students and their middle and upper-income peers. Reading as a leisure activity is the best predictor of comprehension, vocabulary and reading speed. Third graders who can t read on grade level are four times less likely to graduate by age 18 than a proficient reader.

3 In light of these and other equally startling research findings, the objectives of the new summer reading program are to Improve literacy Focus on community involvement, and Foster a life long enjoyment of reading. Concomitant goals are to demonstrate that The Public Library at Tellico Village is for everyone, not just Tellico Village residents, and that reading is not a solitary activity. We want to spark imaginations and connect children with each other and their families through books. A program outline (children s segment) summary: Dates: first Saturday in June through second Saturday in August Location: Public Library at Tellico Village Participants: ages 5-14 (completed kindergarten through 8 th grade) Estimate 40 children Groupings: Group One, pre-readers; Group Two new readers; Group Three, chapter readers Rewards-Ongoing: stickers for each book read; weekly-drawing for a book, movie coupon, T-shirt, backpack, etc. All Loudon County elementary and middle school librarians will be contacted during the planning stages. The Education Committee of The Friends Board of Directors will review program results. Funding request Program supplies: $ each for stickers, rewards, materials, refreshments Children s books: $1,000 The second segment of the 2013 Children and Adult Summer Library Reading Program focuses on adults. To fulfill the library s mission and vision statements recorded earlier, the objectives of the adult program are to: Establish The Public Library at Tellico Village as the center for lifelong learning in the area, and Promote cultural enrichment and knowledge in all fields of interest. A program outline (adult segment) summary: Dates: June, July, August, one free program per month Purpose: Continuing effort to expand patronage inside and outside Tellico Village boundaries Location: The Public Library at Tellico Village Participants: Teens to adults Estimate 35 attendees per event

4 Events: 1. June: Lincoln/Jefferson: Contributions to Emancipation by David Flanagan. 2. July: Photography Appreciation by Doug Christman. 3. August: Reader s Theater Workshop by Debbie Mayberry. Program is designed for elementary teachers and other interested adults. Each presenter is volunteering his time to share his knowledge and love of the subject selected. Each presenter is recommending books for reference and to encourage or enhance knowledge of the field. These titles will be purchased for loan by the library and made available well before the events. Program evaluations will be requested of the participants and reviewed by the Education Committee of The Friends Board of Directors for future program planning. This is needed for audio enhancement for large groups and the hearing impaired.

Funding Request Two Providing seating to enhance the Mary Ann Bork Memorial Courtyard will honor, in perpetuity, a woman who is cherished as a founder of The Public Library at Tellico Village and the General Federation of Women s Clubs-Tellico Village. Naming the central outdoor structure at the new library building in honor of Mary Ann Bork recognizes her extraordinary volunteer work to promote the intellectual and social growth of a community. It also serves as a tangible, continuing source of encouragement for present and future service by those who strive to perpetuate and emulate the honoree s vision for the community. Acceptance of this request for four high quality, ribbed steel, six foot long benches would provide an opportunity for permanent recognition by the GFWC of Mary Ann Bork s contribution to the organization. The support of the General Federation of Women s Clubs- Tellico Village for this program would be recognized and honored at the April building dedication. Funding Request for Mary Ann Bork Memorial Courtyard Benches (4) $3,600 Cost includes purchase price, shipping and engraving estimate Total Amount Requested: For both funding requests $7675 Number of people and/or families served: The reading and educational programs would directly serve the estimated 145 participants, and would create numerous indirect influences through association with the participants families and acquaintances and elementary teachers. Courtyard benches would benefit the 6100 registered library patrons and guests. Other Sources of Funding: No other source has been contacted for funding of the Summer Reading Program or the Mary Ann Bork Memorial Courtyard Benches.
