All but 15 men returned to England with Sir Franci Drake, who wa on hi way from Spanih Florida to England. In 1587 Raleigh ent over about 150 men, women, and children to Roanoke under the leaderhip of John White. Except for the bone of one man, there wa no ign of the 15 men who had remained. After a month White realized how much the colony needed in order to flourih. He ailed back to England for upplie. White family including hi granddaughter Virginia Dare, the firt Englih child born in North America tayed behind on Roanoke. Becaue of war between England and Spain, White wan t able to return to Roanoke until When he and hi crew returned to the fort, the colonit and their houe had diappeared. The only clue to their whereabout wa the word Croatan carved on a tree. Croatan wa the name of a friendly

Did they die from hunger, ickne, or hotile attack? To thi day, no one know. The firt permanent ettler in North Carolina came from Virginia in the In 1663, King Charle II granted a huge piece of land called the Carolina to eight men. The land wa plit into two part, Albemarle in the north and Clarendon in the outh. In 1712, Albemarle became the colony of North Carolina.
