Briefly, althoueh the interview was very long and dull, two points were clear. First that Mr. Hathaway thought to " j olly'~ me, (I know no other word for it), into an amiabilie state of mind concerntng our experiences, and second to suggest that if I would promise him then and there to become enthusiastic or at least silent about our trip, the Great Northern, thoue;h he had no assurance of it, might consider some sort of a settlement.
