Inside: All you need to get started including your fun treasure hunt map! Fundraise together with the Canal & River Trust

Let s work together Contents 1 Let s work together 2-3 Together we can raise vital funds 4-5 Find a project close to home or close to your heart 6-9 Let s get fundraising Let s get collecting 12 Thank you from John Craven At the Canal & River Trust, we care about your local waterways as much as you do. By working together, we can help make them even more special for everyone to enjoy. We know that people like you have done a wonderful job of caring for our canals and rivers in the past and we believe you re crucial to their future too. That s why, as the new charity entrusted with the care of your local waterways, we re glad we can count on your support. Together, we can pool our resources, share our knowledge and work more effectively than ever. And that s the best way of caring for the canals and rivers we all love. How to get in touch with us: By phone: (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm) By supportercare@canalrivertrust.org.uk By post: Canal & River Trust, First Floor North, Station House, 500 Elder Gate, MILTON KEYNES MK9 1BB Canal & River Trust Canal & River Trust is a company limited by guarantee registered in England & Wales under number ; and a charity registered with the Charity Commission under number

Together we can make canals and rivers greener wilder These volunteers raised over 35,000 by cycling from London to Brussels. Will you have fun and raise money too? Together, we can raise vital funds 200 But the first thing to do is decide where you want your money to be spent. You can choose either to support our vital work across the country, or focus on a specific project whether that s planting fruit trees in your local community or saving water voles on the other side of the country! could lay hedgerow and build dormouse boxes creating a safe habitat where these timid endangered creatures can thrive....and livelier than ever When it comes to fundraising, we ve got plenty of ideas and advice to share and we re keen to help you in any way that we can. So in this booklet, you ll find some great fundraising ideas to inspire you as well as tips to make sure your events are a roaring success. 500 could plant an orchard of apple and pear trees beside the canal providing fruit and welcome shade for years to come could help put on a canalside festival and encourage the community to care about their local waterways. Turn the page to see some of our exciting projects or visit canalrivertrust.org.uk/appeals for a full list 3

Find a project close to home or close to your heart It just goes to show what a wonderful transformation you can help bring about. To support one of our current projects, visit canalrivertrust.org.uk/appeals We run a host of projects across England and Wales, so there s something to inspire everyone. Here s just some of the great work that supporters like you have made possible in recent months In the North In Wales 1 Creating a nature trail along the Ribble Link in Lancashire We ll be planting poplar trees and wildflowers, building a bird hide and installing bat boxes to boost numbers of these shy nocturnal mammals. 5 Protecting water voles and other wildlife along the Llangollen Canal We ll be helping to maintain a vital stretch of canal bank home to many rare aquatic plants and invertebrate species, as well as endangered water voles. 6 Opening up the views along the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal We ll be helping visitors enjoy views across the Brecon Beacons National Park by trimming back the tree canopy and encouraging wildflowers to thrive. 2 Protecting barn owls along the Aire & Calder Canal in Yorkshire We ll be maintaining precious grassland habitat and installing nesting boxes, where barn owls can raise their young. In the Midlands 4 3 Restoring the famed King s Norton guillotine lock near Birmingham We ll be repairing the lock s walls and removing silt from its chamber to preserve this amazing piece of 19th century engineering for many years to come. In the South 4 Repairing a damaging breach to the Trent & Mersey Canal We ll be mending the 230-year-old walls of the canal after a huge section was swept away by floodwaters in autumn Transforming the towpaths around Bath We ll be removing litter, painting locks and planting wildflowers to make this beautiful area even more special. 7 Planting an edible wall along the Hertford Union Canal We ll be transforming a bare section of brickwork into a flourishing vegetable patch for all the community to enjoy

Let s get fundraising Together in the great outdoors Together with families 1. X marks the spot Take the hard work out of treasure-hunting by using the very special map you ll find at the back of this booklet. All you need to do is mark where the treasure lies on the reverse of your map then, turn over, charge people 1 to guess the hiding place and award a small prize to the winner. 2. Throw a pirate party Children love dressing up and a pirate party gives them the perfect excuse to borrow headscarves and hooped earrings, brandish plastic 6 cutlasses and practise their best Yo ho ho. Every young pirate must pay a small fee to attend or else walk the plank! 3. Host a quiz night Everyone loves a quiz even the youngest members of the family. And if you visit our website, you ll find plenty of canal-related facts and figures to use for your questions. 4. Hold a lock ransom Stand guard over a local lock and lend a hand to boaters passing through for a small fee, of course. They ll probably be glad to let you take the strain and you ll work up a good sweat in the process too! 1. On your bike 3. Lay a treasure trail A sponsored cycle along your favourite canal is a great way to have fun, keep fit and raise money. So dust off your bike and get back in the saddle! You can search for a suitable route and find plenty of cycling hints and tips at canalrivertrust.org.uk/cycling Plant clues along your canal or river bank, or lay a trail using sticks, stones and other natural materials. Hide your treasure of sweets and treats then, tell your teams to pay up and get hunting! 2. Stroll, ramble or walk If walking is more your thing, gather your friends for a sponsored hike instead. Towpaths make wonderful walking trails flat, safe and trafficfree. And whether you choose a gentle ramble or a vigorous all-day trek, you ll enjoy fresh air, great views and some gorgeous canal-side scenery. 4. Hold an open house (boat) For one day only, throw open the doors of your houseboat to the general public. You can charge a small admittance fee and serve refreshments (homemade lemonade always goes down a treat!). You could even take visitors for a ride! 7

Let s get creative 1. Organise a mobile phone photo challenge Celebrate the beauty of your local canal or river by organising a photography competition. No fancy equipment allowed all entries must be taken using the camera on your mobile phone. And you can display the best submissions in your local community, in an online Flickr gallery or by sharing on Facebook and Twitter. Alternatively, send them in to us and we might well publish them in our Waterfront magazine! 2. Write an ode to your canal A poetry competition is a great way to get people to unleash their inner Shakespeare (or Spike Milligan). Charge a small fee for entries and publish the best online or in your local newspaper. Don t forget to share them with us too it would be lovely to see some of your poems in print in Waterfront. 3. Ready, steady, bake Holding a cake sale is a tried-andtested fundraiser and always proves immensely popular. Amass your ingredients, mix well, add a dash of decorative flair and watch your delicious cakes sell out! 4. Get creative with cast-offs Re-style second-hand clothes by stitching on beads and buttons, or slashing them into a whole new shape. Turn old nick-nacks and ornaments into high art then sell your creations to the highest bidder. One man s trash is another man s treasure, as they say And don t forget Get permission All events that take place on canals and rivers, or along their banks, require our permission and ideally three months notice, so we can avoid clashes with other events and maintenance work. But it s not hard to get the go-ahead just follow the step-by-step guide at canalrivertrust. org.uk/planning-an-event Stay safe Do make health and safety a priority when planning your event and never let children play unsupervised beside the canal. Keep a well-stocked first aid kit and always prepare food and drink in a hygienic environment. Be realistic about our great British climate! If you re planning an outdoor event, make sure you ve got a plan B in case the heavens open you ll need somewhere close to shelter and plenty of umbrellas on hand. Spread the word The more people you tell about your fundraising events, the more people who ll be inspired to support them. So use Twitter, Facebook and to tell the world about forthcoming plans and get your friends and family to bring along a crowd. 8 9

Let s get collecting So you ve planned your event. You re raring to go. But have you thought about how you re going to collect and bank your money yet? Two ways to collect your money Online By post You can set up a dedicated JustGiving page at justgiving.com. This way, people can donate online and you can log on to watch your fundraising total grow! Alternatively, you can collect cash and cheques to send back to us and we ve included some handy donation and Gift Aid forms in the back of this booklet to help you. Your handy checklist When posting your donations to us, be sure to include: Cover Sheet listing the total value of cheques and cash donations you re submitting. Donation Forms filled in with the details of people who donate with cash or by card, and ticked if they re eligible for Gift Aid. Additional Gift Aid Forms for those who donate by cheque. Once you ve checked the paperwork, all you need to do is pop your donations in the post and feel proud of fundraising for the Canal & River Trust. Why is Gift Aid so vital? Gift Aid makes the gifts you receive worth 25% more to us and doesn t cost the donor a penny so there s no simpler or quicker way to make a difference. 10 We really do appreciate your kindness. 11

Thank you from John Craven! I ve always been a big fan of canals, ever since I visited the Five Rise flight of locks on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal as a boy. So it s wonderful to know you re a kindred spirit. And I can t thank you enough for helping to keep our beautiful and historic waterways safe for the future. By fundraising for the Canal & River Trust, you ll be playing your part in a wonderful transformation that will see our canals and rivers become even more special and protect this vital part of our heritage for generations to come. So I hope this booklet has given you all the ideas and inspiration you need to get started. Good luck and thanks again for doing your bit! John Craven Journalist & TV Presenter 12

Working together in the future If you need any more advice or support with your fundraising, we re here to help. We can: Promote your events We re not short of Facebook friends and Twitter followers. So if you tell us about your events and activities, we can spread the word far and wide in seconds. Brighten up your day We have plenty of free fundraising materials to help decorate your events including colourful bunting and balloons. You ll find our contact details on the inside cover of this booklet, so please feel free to get in touch at any time. Good luck!
