1 Survivor Packet for: ENGLISH IV Honors/Academic Name: Period: (Be sure to keep this packet in class in case one of your tribe members is absent!)

2 WHO WILL SURVIVE? We are going to begin reading the novel Lord of the Flies. While reading this novel, you will be placed in survivor teams. As a team, you will work together to try to win the ultimate prize. Points will be conducted depending on various tests or missions throughout the next few weeks. These tests/missions may be unit quizzes, word searches, crossword puzzles, trivia questions, short essays, artistic drawings etc. Working together is the key to survival. Each person in your group has an individual strength, and it is up to you to find it. You will receive a group grade and an individual grade. If you choose to leave your group and work on your own, your points stat over You can switch groups only if a unanimous vote determines that everyone in the team you will to switch to want you. (This can only happen after chapter 5.) Your quiz and study guide scores are averaged together to earn points. REMEMBER, WORKING TOGETHER IS THE KEY TO SURVIVAL Here is your first mission: (Follow directions carefully!) As a team, decide on a group name. After deciding on a name, you must draw a picture on the front of your folder which represents your team. This is due. The team with the most creative team name will earn points as well as the team with the most creative picture. Do your best to find the artist in your group, and put your heads together to come up with the most creative team name. (Hint: it usually helps to relate your team name to the book in some way.) GOOD LUCK!

Each summary should be at least one paragraph (8 10 complete sentences). The summaries will be turned in on the day that you take the test along with the character analysis chart. One way to summarize any chapter with conflict in it is to use the SWBS method: Somebody, Wanted, But, So (you can substitute other coordinating conjunctions for the but ). Example: In the book Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, scientist Henry Jekyll wanted to use a persona to engage in his wicked impulses, but the persona ended up taking over his identity, so Jekyll finally gave in and eventually died as a result. 10 Literary Analysis for Lord of the Flies Understanding Characterization Characterization is the act of creating and developing a character. A writer can use direct characterization when stating or describing a character s traits. Indirect characterization is when an author shows a character s personality through his or her actions, thoughts, feelings, and words, or through another character s observations and reactions. Indirect characterization relies on the reader to put together the clues in order to figure out the character s personality. It is important to remember that characterization relies upon the character s traits and not upon him or her physical appearance. Complete the chart below with each character s physical description, the traits he demonstrates at the beginning of the novel, and changes (if any) the character exhibits as he moves through the story. Character Physical Description Early Traits Changes Ralph Jack Piggy Simon Roger Sam and Eric

11 Understanding Symbolism Symbolism is the narrative technique used to give significance or deeper meaning to certain people or objects, which represent some other figure. For example, a rose can be a symbol of love. Depending upon the color of the rose, it may suggest a particular kind of love (i.e. Red roses symbolize passion, pink roses are for friendship, or yellow roses represent jealousy). What does each of the following items from Lord of the Flies represent on a symbolic level? Symbol Meaning The conch shell Piggy s specs The island The Scar The Beast Lord of the Flies The signal fire The War Paint

Be sure to explain how you are feeling at this moment. Make up an address for both the island and your auntie back home. Remember, the boys are not from the United States. Be creative and use the correct letter format (heading, inside address, salutation, body, closing, signature). These are due at the beginning of the next class period. Begin your rough draft on this paper right now. Good Luck!

15 15 We Ought to Draw a Map Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to create a map of the island that our little British friends have inhabited. The following instructions will serve as your guidelines: 1) The map must be minimum of 2 x 1 (Two feet by 1 foot) There is ONE exception to that rule which is food related. No food can be used that is prone to rot, i.e., bacon, ham, any meat other than jerky). 2) Be creative with your choice of medium (some ideas are markers, paint, pencils, chalk, pasta, play-doh, leaves, food, etc.) 3) You MUST have a key with symbols explaining your map. 4) You may work on your own or with ONE other person (remember two people= double the brainpower). 5) Your map must have 16 of the 20 following items: The Scar Where the conch is found Huts The forest Lord of the Flies Castle Rock Ralph s Camp Jack s Camp The ocean Waterfalls Location of the dead parachutist Location of Piggy s demise The lagoon Fire Mtn. Location of Simon s demise Palm Trees Coral Reefs Simon s nature area Bathing Pool Granite Cliffs Keep in mind the SHAPE of the island also. You should refer to Chapter One for valuable information on the description of the island. You will be required to present your map to the class and explain why you placed locations where you did. Have fun with the project; use your imagination and creativity!! pts DUE:
